[name]Hi[/name] - I have been a long time reader of this blog because I love names. However, now I am actually pregnant (22 weeks along) and have realized that I love learning and analyzing names and trends and that the art of picking [name]ONE[/name] name to give your child that they will have [name]FOREVER[/name] is just daunting.
If it is a boy, we have agreed on [name]Lucas[/name] (nn [name]Luke[/name]).
If it is a girl, I am concerned we will be leaving the hospital nameless! My husband and I don’t tend to overlap on many girl names.
Here are some names he likes that I don’t: [name]Kristi[/name], [name]Becky[/name], [name]Amanda[/name], [name]Morgan[/name] (basically anything that screams we had our baby in 1984)
Here are some names I like that he doesn’t: [name]Theresa[/name] (nn [name]Tessa[/name]), [name]Amara[/name], [name]Maren[/name], [name]Audrey[/name] … and guilty pleasure is [name]Aurelia[/name].
Here are ones that we both think are okay, but don’t feel like the one: [name]Leah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Elena[/name], [name]Claire[/name]
Our favorite girl’s name is [name]Elizabeth[/name] … and we named our dog that six years ago, so it’s out. If only I could go back in time and agree to name the dog something stupid …
Most men’s notions of names were frozen in their own adolescence. They don’t look beyond their own age cohort. So they tend to suggest the nice girl / hot girl names of the 80s (i.e. [name]Alyssa[/name], [name]Becky[/name]). They rebel more than anything against ‘old lady names.’
[name]One[/name] suggestion would be to go to the Social Security Administration website, pull up the modern name lists, and show him just how much things have changed.
As for names: he likes safe, feminine, familiar names; yours are a bit more continental. Some initial thoughts:
Since your husband seems to like “80’s names”, I compiled a list of names that were at least somewhat popular in that decade, though not to the extent of [name]Amanda[/name], [name]Becky[/name], etc.:
[name]Do[/name] you like more popular/traditional names? I’ll suggest a few of my favorite more classic names. [name]Leonora[/name], [name]Lenora[/name], [name]Bryn[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Arianna[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Violet[/name], Emmery, and [name]Charlotte[/name].
From your list I like [name]Amara[/name], I think that is a lovely name, and you could use “[name]Mara[/name]” for short. [name]Elena[/name], [name]Leah[/name] and [name]Claire[/name] are all lovely. Some suggestions…
[name]Leah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Clara[/name] or [name]Claire[/name] are nice. [name]How[/name] about [name]Caroline[/name] or [name]Alexandra[/name]/[name]Alexandria[/name]… Good luck :)!
You both like [name]Lucas[/name], so what about something similar to that?
[name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Luciana[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Elena[/name] (you have this on your list and I [name]LOVE[/name] it)
[name]Helen/name
[name]Emilia[/name]
Maybe you could use [name]Liza[/name] or [name]Eliza[/name]? [name]Both[/name] play off of [name]Elizabeth[/name] without being [name]Elizabeth[/name].
I totally feel you… my husband and I had a much harder time agreeing on girls names as well!!
(and [name]Aurelia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] would be beautiful!)
