Needing more help!

Sorry, posting once again!

You were all so helpful with my poll regarding the names [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] or [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].

My husband and I love the nicknames [name_m]Ned[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], and we are starting to realize we love those nicknames more than the actual name [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. We don’t want to use those names just by themselves as we feel it’d be nice to have a full name for him to use professionally. We are also Australian which is very big with nicknames.
For example, my name is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] but I go mostly by [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. Husband’s name is [name_m]Robert[/name_m], and he goes mostly by [name_u]Robbie[/name_u]. We want the same option for our son.

What do you all think of possibly using the nicknames [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] or [name_m]Ned[/name_m] for the name [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]? I know that they’re nicknames for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], but does it make any sense to use the nickname from the middle name? I’m just not sure whether it would just come across to people as confusing.

Thanks for any input! We’ve got 5 weeks to go, and still haven’t come to any decisions.

I think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”/"[name_m]Ned[/name_m]" definitely works. Both [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_m]Ned[/name_m] are these nicknames that are a bit of a stretch for any name, and [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] “[name_m]Ned[/name_m]” isn’t any worse than [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “[name_m]Ned[/name_m]”.

Thanks @moonstone

Honestly, I think as the parents you get to choose the nickname you like regardless of whether it makes sense to people. Other people don’t have to get it! If I said “My first name is [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] but I go by [name_f]Beth[/name_f]” would anyone really question it? I think generally people might wonder about it for a minute and then get over it and call me [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. So if you want to use a nickname from the middle name, I see no reason not to use it.

For what it’s worth, my brother’s name is [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], and he goes exclusively by [name_u]Chris[/name_u] in all settings. It can be confusing in official matters (doctors and teachers are the usually ones who get confused about it) but for the most part it’s been a non-issue, and no one has ever insisted on calling him a variant of [name_m]Richard[/name_m].

Bump pls. Hoping to get a wide range of opinions

Thanks @silversky

If your favourite nicknames are for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and nicknames matter a lot to you I’d go for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].

However

I know this is going to be a pain in the ass but I saw you have [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] in your signature and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] would work better imo.

I think it could work, especially for the nickname Ted/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (from elliotT [name_m]EDmund[/name_m]).

I’m guessing you’ve already considered the other [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- names, but I thought I might mention [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] as another potential way to [name_m]Ned[/name_m].

Good luck, and congratulations!

I know a [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] whose name is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and an [name_u]Allie[/name_u] whose name is [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. So people definitely do it. The people I know never use their first names though. It would be a little weird to me to meet someone who was sometimes [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and sometimes [name_m]Ned[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. I do personally love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

Nicknames can really be whatever you want. And I find it’s best not to stress too much about them. Name him the name you like the most. Nickname him what comes naturally. If it’s an obvious nickname, great. If it’s a nickname for a middle name and kind of a stretch, who cares. My daughter [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] was intended to be nicknamed [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. We literally never call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_f]Bea[/name_f] is one of her nicknames though. Short for her middle name, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

Thanks ladies

I think it works! Lots of people go by their middle name, so I don’t see a problem with going with a nickname thats more associated with the middle name.

I think it works as well! Nicknames don’t really have to make sense, but this one actually does, despite being a little clever.
