My boyfriend and I can come up with boys names all day long, but when it comes to names for a girl we don’t really see eye to eye. In this posting I’m going to throw out names that I like and names that he likes. I am looking for not only comments and thoughts on our choices, but any helpful names or combos that are both beautiful and not insanely common. Last name is H___(2 syllables).
My picks (thus far):
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Crystal[/name] (After my great, great grandmother ([name]Livvie[/name]) and my mother)
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] ([name]Mae[/name] from my great grandmother)
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Mae[/name] (though my boyfriend absolutely detests the idea of 2 mns)
[name]Ella[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
His picks:
[name]Luna[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Haylee[/name] (which I, personally, hate)
[name]Riley[/name] (I actually like this one quite a bit. We are fans of unisex names for girls. But I also like names that sound elegant.)
I think that is where we are at as of now. As you can see, we need a lot of help. Any and all suggestions welcome! : )
It looks like you have a fondness for classic names with a modern feel, whereas your boyfriend likes unisex, trendy names. I’m sure we can find a happy medium.
[name]Do[/name] any of these appeal to you both? For middle names, you could use [name]May[/name] (I prefer this spelling to [name]Mae[/name], and it has the same meaning) or [name]Maya[/name], an alternate form of the same name. [name]Olivia[/name] could also be used as a middle name, to honor [name]Livvie[/name]. I personally think [name]Crystal[/name] is very dated, so you could use [name]Kristen[/name], [name]Christine[/name], or [name]Cristina[/name] as an alternative…
My favorites are [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Cristina[/name] “[name]Hanson[/name]”, [name]Eden[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] “[name]Hanson[/name]”, [name]Alanna[/name] [name]May[/name] “[name]Hanson[/name]”, and [name]Bridget[/name] [name]Maya[/name] “[name]Hanson[/name]”. It would be good to know if your last name is more like [name]Hanson[/name] or [name]Hendrix[/name] or Hinkel…
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Crystal[/name]-- [name]Olivia[/name] is beautiful, but so, so popular…
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name]-- I like this a lot better than [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Crystal[/name]
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Mae[/name]-- I much prefer [name]Nora[/name] without the H, or as a nn for [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Mae[/name]-- [name]Nora[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is very pretty
[name]Ella[/name] [name]Rose[/name]-- [name]Ella[/name] is popular and a little too insubstantial, and [name]Rose[/name] is hugely popular as a middle name.
[name]Luna[/name] [name]Mae[/name]-- [name]Luna[/name] is very nice!
[name]Jade[/name]-- not my style at all
[name]Haylee[/name]-- I’m on your side… sooo trendy, and a surname…
[name]Riley[/name]-- extremely trendy, and technically a boy’s name (not unisex)
I like [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]. [name]Luna[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] would be beautiful too! What about [name]Livia[/name], if you want to honor a [name]Livvie[/name]? It’s beautiful, and not nearly as popular as [name]Olivia[/name]. Here are some names/combos:
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Crystal[/name] (After my great, great grandmother ([name]Livvie[/name]) and my mother): [name]Olivia[/name] is presently #6 in popularity, but if it was your grandma’s name, I think its meaning to you far outweighs its popularity. (I thought I’d mention popularity because you mentioned that you’re not interested in popular names.)
More names with a potential [name]Liv[/name] nickname:
[name]Livia[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Liv[/name] (in and of itself)
[name]Olive[/name]
Names to honor [name]Crystal[/name] (although not all work with [name]Olivia[/name]):
[name]Christabel[/name]
[name]Christiana[/name]
[name]Carys[/name] (contains many of [name]Crystal[/name]'s letters, but it may be a stretch for you)
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] ([name]Mae[/name] from my great grandmother): I prefer [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Mae[/name] to [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Crystal[/name].
More names to honor [name]Mae[/name]:
[name]Margaret[/name] (nn [name]Mae[/name] or [name]Maisie[/name])
[name]Mabel[/name] (nn [name]Mae[/name])
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Mae[/name]: I love the name [name]Nora[/name], but without the h. I think a longer middle name would work really well in the middle with [name]Nora[/name].
[name]Norah[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Mae[/name] (though my boyfriend absolutely detests the idea of 2 mns): I love [name]Elizabeth[/name] with [name]Mae[/name], but because [name]Nora[/name] ends in a vowel sound and [name]Elizabeth[/name] begins with one, I have to pause between them when I say them out loud.
[name]Ella[/name] [name]Rose[/name]: [name]Ella[/name] is very popular (#19), and feels even more popular to me due to [name]Isabella[/name] (#2). I love [name]Rose[/name] as a first name, but it’s now the #1 middle name, so it feels a bit like a filler to me.
[name]Luna[/name] [name]Mae[/name]: I think you need a longer middle for the flow. I know that a lot of people love [name]Luna[/name], but I personally think of lunatic and looney when I hear the name.
[name]Haylee[/name] (which I, personally, hate): I’m definitely not a [name]Hailey[/name]/[name]Haylee[/name]/[name]Hayleigh[/name] fan. It feels very dated and trendy to me, and is part of what [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name] refer to as the -ayley meganame trend ([name]Baylee[/name]/[name]Bailey[/name]/[name]Caylee[/name]/[name]Cailey[/name]/Jaylie/[name]Jaylee[/name]/[name]Shaylee[/name], etc.)
[name]Riley[/name] (I actually like this one quite a bit. We are fans of unisex names for girls. But I also like names that sound elegant.): It’s very popular (#39 for girls and #106 for boys).

Your advice could not be hitting the nail on the head more! I completely agree. I think we were leaning more towards [name]Norah[/name]/[name]Nora[/name] than [name]Olivia[/name] just because we don’t like how popular it is. Also, while I think [name]Luna[/name] is cute and I like the meaning, I also fear people will call her looney.
Also, so many of the names you have listed are wonderful! I absolutely love [name]Briar[/name], but my boyfriend didn’t seem to like it when I first brought it up. We are both so torn with girls names it really helps to see so many others from someone else’s perspective. Thank you!

You’re so welcome. I’m glad you saw some names you like. (I really like [name]Nora[/name] a lot. (I think the [name]Norah[/name] spelling is pretty, too, but I’m just personally more of a [name]Nora[/name] person.)
From the more modern sounding names, I think that [name]Briar[/name] is pretty, too…

Did you like [name]Stella[/name]? It means star, so it reminds me of [name]Luna[/name]. (It’s also close to [name]Ella[/name].)
Take care![/quote]
[name]Nora[/name]/[name]Norah[/name] is one that I have recently come across and fallen in love with, which is strange because I didn’t use to think much of the name. I mentioned it to my boyfriend and he really liked it too, though he still loves [name]Luna[/name]. Ugh. haha
[name]Bronwyn[/name] is cute, and one that I have never heard. : )
I love the meaning of [name]Stella[/name], and would actually probably like the name if it didn’t remind me of [name]Stella[/name]'s Got Her Groove Back, and the only person that I have ever met with that name, I did not have a good experience with. : ( So, unfortunately, that name is kind of ruined for me.
Thanks again so much! Your help has been truly invaluable.

I could have sworn I replied to this post earlier! It must have not went through. Anyway, better late than never!
You seem to have definitely grasped where my boyfriend and I differ on our naming tastes. You also are correct, mostly, about the names that I would like. I loved [name]Aurora[/name], but he shot that one down. : (
I think the list you provided mashing together both of our styles is great! I will definitely go over it with him and see what he thinks.
And the closest I can think to give you a better idea of the last name is “Hubbel” (Like the telescope.)

Better late than never, for sure! I almost put [name]Aurora[/name] on the list of names I thought both of you would like, mainly because I thought your boyfriend might be swayed by the [name]Rory[/name] nickname! [name]Alas[/name], I found it to be closer to your elegant princess naming style, so I changed my mind. I guess I was right!
I am eager to see what you and he make of my list combining your tastes, but I wanted to also provide a few names similar to [name]Aurora[/name] but perhaps different enough that your boyfriend might agree to them.
My favorites with “Hubbel” are: [name]Ardin[/name], [name]Cadence[/name], [name]Maia[/name], [name]Marin[/name], [name]Vida[/name], and [name]Aliana[/name]! Best wishes, and I look forward to hearing from you!
