Neirin, Piran & Terwyn

As many of you already know, we have a solid top 4 boy name options ([name]Emrys[/name], [name]Evander[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Amias[/name]), but I’m continually seeking to find other options ([name]Solon[/name], mentioned in a previous post, is one that’s still gathering up some reflection time), just in case our perfect name has just not yet been found (though I’d be happy with any of our top 4). As a side note, [name]Emrys[/name] has been slowly making it’s way more toward the top of the pack, he’s sitting in the number one spot for now, with [name]Evander[/name] currently following on his heels.

Here are three new-to-me discoveries that I have been reflecting on. What are your thoughts on these names? Any that you think I should consider bringing into the running for the top few? Why?

— Neirin (does anyone know if this is pronounced NAY-rin or [name]NYE[/name]-rin, some places I saw it mentioned one way, some the other. But I figure some [name]Berry[/name] here knows for sure.)- As far as I can tell, it’s probably a Welsh name related to [name]Aneurin[/name], meaning ‘honor’, but I read a couple of places that it might be related to an Irish name that means ‘surrounded by light’.

— [name]Piran[/name] (I’m pretty sure this one is pronounced like [name]Kieran[/name] but with a P, like PEER-in). According to nameberry it’s an Irish name that means ‘prayer’, but I can’t find much evidence of that elsewhere.

— Terwyn (Any Welsh speakers that can confirm for me the pronunciation here? Is it like TER-wyn?) It’s a Welsh name that means ‘bright’

All the names look really cool. I do not have any information concerning how to pronounce those names or what they mean. The only thing is I can see that Neirin and Terwyn could cause issues with people saying the name incorrectly all the time. I really like [name]Piran[/name], I would pronounce it like you have said, like [name]Kieran[/name] with a p.

Can’t say much for the others, but I love that you’ve got [name]Piran[/name] there! [name]Piran[/name]'s the patron saint of Cornwall- his saint’s day is 5th [name]March[/name] It’s pronounced with a shorter ‘i’ sound though, with the beginning ‘Pi’ like the beginning of ‘pip’. Definitely doesn’t rhyme with [name]Kieran[/name]! It can also be spelt Perran and I know of several boys who have it as their middle name. [name]Piran[/name] came over from [name]Ireland[/name], I know that much, but today he’s very much associated with Cornwall. [name]Just[/name] had a quick look at my family history site and saw there are records of Pirans since the 1500s at least. As a Cornishwoman, I would strongly recommend using it

I love [name]Piran[/name] (and agree with what c&p said). Nice one! Terwyn is pronounced ter-[name]WIN[/name] (the r is kind of rolling).

Neirin (nay-rin) is an older form of Aneirin apparently. Not a Welsh speaker though, my knowledge is purely from remembering what my Welsh friend taught me about the alphabet. I don’t know about Terwyn though (except the ending will be ‘win’).

I love your solid top 4 list! I personally wouldnt bring any of the 3 into it.

([name]Emrys[/name] and [name]Amias[/name] are my faves from your original list)

Neirin is the older form of Aneirin and I would pronouce it as Nay-rin myself as a Welsh speaker.

I like [name]Piran[/name] …Cornish though not popular .

Terwyn …very unusual Welsh boy’s name .

I would only choose Aneirin / Neirin from these choices …your solid 4 are fine.

Good luck

[name]Piran[/name] is rising a bit in my mind, maybe even into the top 5. I found out it might also have a meaning in Persian (best as I could discover, it might mean ‘wise’ or ‘wisdom’ in Persian-- I do need to do some more research on this though). As well as the important Irish/Cornish connections in both meaningful meaning and history. I am still a slight bit confused about it’s correct pronunciation though (in Irish/Cornish or in Persian or in Slovenian (where it is also the name of a large tourist town there)). More research required.

[name]Do[/name] you think Neirin (NAY-rin) sounds too similar to our first son’s name, Rayhan (ray-hahn)? I’m worried that it might sound like the same name with the N and R reversed.

Terwyn is out for sure. Neirin is on the verge of being of out, but not quite yet. [name]Piran[/name] is still in the running for now.
