Has anyone ever heard of [name]Nellie[/name] being used as a nickname for [name]Lillian[/name]? My great grandmother was named [name]Nellie[/name] and my father couldn’t remember what her proper first name was. I was eventually able to locate her full name in my grandfather’s obituary and her name is [name]Lillian[/name]. I would never really think of [name]Nellie[/name] as short form of [name]Lillian[/name] but I like it…just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this or think it’s usable? Too much of a stretch?
I’ve never heard of it. I know Nellies and Nells named [name]Eleanor[/name] but not [name]Lillian[/name]. It’s a bit of a stretch but I can see the connection.
I don’t think it’s an intuitive nn for [name]Lillian[/name], but I guess if it worked for your granny, it can work! [name]Nellie[/name] is almost like [name]Lillian[/name] backwards. I love that your father didn’t remember her full name because she always went by [name]Nellie[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think she disliked her full name? …[name]Nellie[/name] isn’t much shorter than [name]Lillian[/name]. [name]Just[/name] a bit less formal. I favor [name]Penelope[/name] shortened to [name]Nell[/name] or [name]Nellie[/name], or [name]Lillian[/name] shortened to [name]Lil[/name]. Makes me think of the wonderful silent film star [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Gish[/name].
I like [name]Penelope[/name] a lot but I know my husband would hate it seeing as he hates most every name I like. Not sure if he will accept [name]Lillian[/name] or not but I do love [name]Nellie[/name], just don’t like most of the names it is short for. Not that I don’t like them, [name]Helen[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], etc are all pretty enough but I just don’t love them enough to use them.
