Today my aunt said she had no idea what to name my nephew. She is really nervous as her and her husband have different styles of naming.
She likes the name Sinus - A LOT - and well… that’s about it and all the names I’ve suggested she has hated.
So now I need to ask you for help, what would you name a [name_u]December[/name_u] baby who has a sister named [name_f]Silke[/name_f].
The name cannot be popular, but not too unusual. It has to be out of the top 100 and it needs to be international and age well. Thanks!
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought after reading [name_f]Silke[/name_f] was [name_m]Linus[/name_m], which looks like it would fit in well with the other names you have listed!
From the list, [name_m]Balthasar[/name_m] really stands out. I think that name is very cool and really underused. I also like [name_m]Rafael[/name_m] and [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m].
Sinus just makes me think of sinus cavities. I would avoid that one. I already mentioned [name_m]Linus[/name_m], which could work as an alternative, or maybe [name_m]Silas[/name_m]?
I like them too, but sadly when I showed [name_m]Balthasar[/name_m] the first they was “Like the demon?” and apparently [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Rafael[/name_m] reminds them of Pakis… (I’m sorry, but that was what they said…). Never heard Sinus cavities.
I’ll write [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] down!
I do not think Sinus is a good choice if she wants something that works internationally because the name has a medical meaning in English-speaking countries like the US, [name_f]Canada[/name_f], UK, or Australia. This word refers to the air passages inside your nose and is very familiar to average people—when you get a cold, it can often turn into a sinus infection, so that is a negative association of sickness with the name.
Not everyone lives in an English speaking country. This poster’s location is listed as Denmark.
The post says that [name_f]Silke[/name_f] has already been born, so I think it’s in kind of poor taste to comment negatively on it. In my opinion, it’s fine to be harsh if you’re trying to talk someone out of using a name for a child that hasn’t already been born, but if a poster mentions a name that you don’t like for a child that’s already been born it’s more tactful to not mention it. (Also, I’ve never heard of the name Sinus before, but I’m a bit surprised you haven’t heard of [name_f]Silke[/name_f]. I’ve seen it mentioned on these boards before. It’s [name_m]German[/name_m] and pronounced similar to ZIL-ka.
Boyandgirl - why the heck should it be a joke? [name_f]Silke[/name_f] is a common name in Denmark and I’m not from a English speaking country, therefore the names might vary from what you are used to.
I will write down the name, run them through the Danish approved names and then give it to my aunt, to see if they will veto or like any of the names! Hopefully it’ll help one step closer till something that they like.
I have heard of [name_f]Silke[/name_f]. Apparently [name_f]Silke[/name_f] is a Frisian diminutive form of [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. Using other Frisian names, how about:
I like [name_u]Roan[/name_u], and I know they will hate the other names. - besides, [name_u]Roan[/name_u] is also the only approved name in the approved Danish names
Sorry, no offense intended, I truly thought it was a joke about Sinus. Now that you mention it I have heard of [name_f]Silke[/name_f]. I guess I was thrown by it being paired with Sinus.
I grew up w/an emotionally immature, whiny mother who constantly complained of sinus infections. Not a good association for a child’s name. [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]?
I meant Sinus. He will not be my child, so I am not responsible for my aunt and her boyfriend likes. And I did not know that Sinus was an illness before I posted here. I’m not from an English speaking country, so I don’t know all the terms and stuff like that and all I knew before posting was that my aunt was very serious about to names. Sinus and Asger.
I know that he will be my cousin, but they are already calling me auntie E. and that it is something they picked up as they have many aunts, and I call them my nieces and nephews. I can’t remember where I said it, but my aunt is/was a foster child and that our family does seems a bit wicked and messy.
I talked to them and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is out if the question. Sadly
