I’m starting to like [name_m]Neville[/name_m], but I’m afraid that most people will immediately think I named my son after the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character. It also doesn’t have many nickname options which I’m big on. The fact that evil is in it does irk me a bit also. I’m more likely to put it in the middle name spot.
What are your thoughts on [name_m]Neville[/name_m]?
The [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character is the first thing that jumps to mind. It’s going to be a tough association to break, especially growing up in a generation where it’s pretty much the only famous [name_m]Neville[/name_m].
For that reason I wouldn’t put it as a first name, as it would affect first impressions too much. But I really like it as a middle name!
And I really don’t care about [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] at all. Saw a couple of the films, tried the first book, thought the [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass series was far better written.
Nicknames are essential if you are naming your child something you love but many will hate ([name_m]Adonis[/name_m], for example). But [name_m]Neville[/name_m] seems a pretty straight-up name, not likely to cause his bearer any pain.
I haven’t read or watched [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] so I didn’t know of the character. I did make a few connections though… I My first thought was [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_m]Neville[/name_m] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_m]Neville[/name_m] (the Plantagenet queen/mother of two kings respectively), and then [name_m]Neville[/name_m] Chamberlain, the former British prime minister. But I’m really into British royals and history so I doubt it’s a connection most would make. It also reminds me of [name_f]Seville[/name_f], the Spanish city.
But [name_m]Neville[/name_m] has a great sound, strong and can hold its own while not being rough and in-your-face.
Usable. Also, [name_m]Neville[/name_m] Longbottom turned out to be a strong character by the end of the HP series, so it’s not like he would be an embarrassing connection.
I’ve read the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series, but my first thought was [name_m]Neville[/name_m] Chamberlin.
[name_m]Neville[/name_m] is very handsome, but I agree with @southern.maple, it’s very nerdy.
I haven’t read [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], so my first association was [name_m]Nevil[/name_m] Shute, author of the end-of-the-world novel “On the [name_m]Beach[/name_m].” It does have a bit of a nerdy vibe even without knowing the HP character-- kind of reminds me of [name_m]Marvin[/name_m] or [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. But I like nerdy.
I like it a lot. And don’t think the HP association is too strong and it’s not like it’s a real bad one. [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is very usable in my book.
I imagine that the HP connection would be stronger in a place like [name_u]America[/name_u], where the name [name_m]Neville[/name_m] isn’t particularly known or popular, than in a place like, say, [name_f]England[/name_f], where [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is much more common. It’s one of those names that I associate strongly with the UK, like [name_m]Basil[/name_m] or [name_m]Nigel[/name_m], so I’d find it a bit unusual on an American kid (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). In my opinion it’s usable, but I would expect to get at least some “Oh, like [name_m]Neville[/name_m] Longbottom?!” reactions. There are certainly worse connections for a name!
Not too [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but posting from the Great Basin ([name_m]Rocky[/name_m] Mountains, U.S.), it does seem a bit too snooty [name_u]Brit[/name_u]. But if Snooty [name_u]Brit[/name_u] is what you are after – you are probably on the right trail. In short, it’s all right if you like that sort of thing.
HP is the first thing that comes to mind, but I don’t think that’s a bad connection - [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is a strong, funny, courageous character. I think it’d be an interesting name to have, but like you said - there aren’t too many nickname options. That wouldn’t bother me too much, but if it does for you, maybe it would be better suited to a middle spot.
