So in the process of looking for some Scottish girl names I came across a bunch of new boy names, and I would love some opinions on them! Since there’s been a lot of 1-5 rating recently feel free to do that (or however else you would like, I’m not picky). If you rate a name really low, I would appreciate it if you gave the reasoning behind it. Thanks!
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Grant[/name] and [name]Ross[/name]! I recently made a thread about [name]Ross[/name], but it didn’t get very many comments–I’m curious to see if you get any more comments on it than I did! I am thinking about [name]Ross[/name] (and [name]Grant[/name], actually) as middle names–I would be happy to meet a little boy with either name, but I feel like they’re more MN contenders for me.
[name]Callum[/name], [name]Lachlan[/name], and [name]Tavish[/name] are my favorites because they’re not common, easy to pronounce, and not “boring” imo. I like [name]Seamus[/name] but do not like that other people think of semen when they see the name
[name]Alasdair[/name] - handsome. Not very wearable/approachable in the US though.
[name]Angus[/name] - I don’t like this name because it reminds me of beef.
[name]Callum[/name]- love
[name]Conall[/name] - love. [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Con[/name].
[name]Duncan[/name] - never really liked this. Not quite sure why, something about dun+can. Plus it reminds me of Dunkin Donuts (US, again)
[name]Ferguson[/name] - too surnamey for me but ok.
[name]Glenn[/name] - not really a fan of this one. Feels dated to me.
[name]Gordon[/name] - I like this.
[name]Grant[/name] - nice enough.
[name]Harris[/name]- too surnamey for me.
[name]Lachlan[/name] - handsome.
[name]Lewis[/name] - I don’t like this spelling of this name.
[name]Malcolm[/name] - nice.
[name]Rogan[/name] - on the fence with this one, it’s a bit close to Rogaine.
[name]Ross[/name] - I like this
[name]Seamus[/name] - nice
[name]Struan[/name] - don’t know this name but first reaction was negative.
[name]Tavish[/name] - love.
[name]Wallace[/name] - love.
@ashthedreamer: I really like [name]Grant[/name] and [name]Ross[/name] too, but I do kind of agree that they’d probably flow better in middle name spots.
@iamamiam and poeticxtac: [name]Lachlan[/name] and [name]Seamus[/name] are two of my favorites!
@emsky: Thanks for your thoughts! I have the same issues with [name]Alasdair[/name], even though I love it.
[name]Alasdair[/name] - 2 - Not sure about how wearable this really is.
[name]Angus[/name] - 2 - I want to like this but all I think of is meat.
[name]Callum[/name] - 4
[name]Conall[/name] - 2 - [name]Don[/name]'t like the sound of this. I think I like [name]Conan[/name] better.
[name]Duncan[/name] - 5
[name]Ferguson[/name] - 3
[name]Glenn[/name] - 1 - It sounds so dull and blah to me.
[name]Gordon[/name] - 3
[name]Grant[/name] - 5
[name]Harris[/name] - 3 - I prefer [name]Harrison[/name], though. It just sounds more complete.
[name]Lachlan[/name] - 4
[name]Lewis[/name] - 5 - [name]Love[/name] love love. Although I do prefer [name]Louis[/name].
[name]Malcolm[/name] - 5
[name]Rogan[/name] - 1 - Looks made up. Like its a cross between [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Logan[/name].
[name]Ross[/name] - 2
[name]Seamus[/name] - 4
[name]Struan[/name] - 1 - Makes me think of the word “strewn”
[name]Tavish[/name] - 3 - I like this a lot in theory but I’m not sure that its really that wearable in the US.
[name]Wallace[/name] - 4
[name]Alasdair[/name] 2- Agree it’s not that wearable in the US
[name]Angus[/name] 2 - The meat association doesn’t bother me, but I’m just not a big fan of the name
[name]Callum[/name] 4 - like this a lot
[name]Conall[/name] 4 - ditto
[name]Duncan[/name] 2 - Theoretically I like it but in a heavy Dunkin Donuts area it makes me kind of anti [name]Duncan[/name]
[name]Ferguson[/name] - 2 - Too [name]Clarissa[/name] Explains it All negatively associated, but that’s probably just me
[name]Glenn[/name] - 3
[name]Gordon[/name] - 4
[name]Grant[/name] - 3
[name]Harris[/name] - 3 (I like it but like [name]Harrison[/name] better)
[name]Lachlan[/name] - 3
[name]Lewis[/name] - 3
[name]Malcolm[/name] - 4
[name]Rogan[/name] - 2 NMS, Makes me think of [name]Seth[/name] [name]Rogan[/name] and Rogaine
[name]Ross[/name] - 3
[name]Seamus[/name] -3
[name]Struan[/name] - 1 I think I just don’t like this because its unfamiliar to me I feel like it would just be confusing to people
[name]Tavish[/name] - 2 Same as above
[name]Wallace[/name] - 3
[name]Alasdair[/name] - 5 - gorgeous!
[name]Angus[/name] - 2 - too much beef
[name]Callum[/name] - 3 - ok but becoming overused
[name]Conall[/name] - 3 - ok but nothing exciting [name]Duncan[/name] - 5- love it!
[name]Ferguson[/name] - 2 - too surnamey. [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Ferguson[/name].
[name]Glenn[/name] - 3 - ok but “dated”
[name]Gordon[/name] - 3 - ok but kind of “dated”. Unfortunately strongly connected to the obnoxious chef [name]Gordon[/name] [name]Ramsay[/name], [name]Grant[/name] - 4 - a family name. Strong and masculine.
[name]Harris[/name] 3 - I prefer [name]Harrison[/name] [name]Lachlan[/name] - 4
[name]Lewis[/name] - 2 - I prefer the French spelling [name]Louis[/name] (loo-ee). This is too surnamey.
[name]Malcolm[/name] - 2 - [name]Malcolm[/name] in the Middle?
[name]Rogan[/name] - 2 - makes me think of the hair regrowth medication, Rogaine
[name]Ross[/name] - 3 - a family name for me. I think it’s better in the middle spot.
[name]Seamus[/name] - 3- this is Irish. [name]Struan[/name] - 4 - Unusual but usable
[name]Tavish[/name] - 2 - It just looks like [name]McTavish[/name] sliced off!
[name]Wallace[/name] - 2 - I know about [name]William[/name] [name]Wallace[/name] but this name makes me think about [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name].
[name]Alasdair[/name] - I like it, but I like it how I like [name]Rupert[/name] and [name]Clive[/name]. Not sure how usable they are in the US. Plus, it’s pretty long to use without a nickname and the only nickname I know used in the UK is “[name]Ali[/name]” which is a commonly-used feminine nickname in the US. [name]Angus[/name] - I like this name. It doesn’t make ME think of the beef immediately, but as you can see based on the previous comments, that’s what Americans are going to think of. [name]Callum[/name] - This name is growing on me. I think it could totally catch on here, but not in the annoying way all the names ending in “den” ([name]Aiden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Braden[/name], etc.) has. [name]Conall[/name] - Eh. Too awkward and surnamey ([name]Connell[/name]) for me to see it working as a first name. [name]Duncan[/name] - This name is tough for me. I’m starting to like it a lot too. Unfortunately, [name]Duncan[/name] [name]Hines[/name] AND Dunkin Donuts makes me think it can’t work here in the States. [name]Ferguson[/name] - Not at all attractive to me. Plus, it’s a long name where at some point, someone’s going to give him a nickname - Ferg? [name]Fergus[/name]? [name]Fergie[/name]? Bleh! It also makes me think of the obnoxious, really strange brother from the show “[name]Clarissa[/name] Explains It All.” [name]Glenn[/name] - Yawn. [name]Gordon[/name] - It’s okay. Kind of forgettable but not as bad as [name]Glenn[/name]. [name]Grant[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] this. Masculine without trying too hard. Only one syllable but yet not boring. [name]Harris[/name] - Prefer [name]Harrison[/name] or [name]Harry[/name]. For some reason, [name]Harris[/name] rubs me the wrong way. [name]Lachlan[/name] - Another name I really like! Different yet not bizarre. Lach/"[name]Lock[/name]" is a cool nickname. [name]Lewis[/name] - I much prefer [name]Louis[/name] pronounced LOO-ee. [name]Malcolm[/name] - Kind of cool. Not for me, but could definitely work. [name]Rogan[/name] - Awkward-sounding to me. I can see how others think of Rogaine. [name]Ross[/name] - I like this name a lot, actually. Definitely surprised it’s not more popular than it is. It’s a great name where it’s easy to spell, familiar to everyone yet not popular. [name]Seamus[/name] - I grew up with a kid named [name]Seamus[/name]. The kid wore it well, but I don’t think it’s for everyone. He was lucky in the fact that he was popular and a swim star. I could see if he weren’t that it wouldn’t be a name that would serve him well… Plus, I think the average American will not be that familiar with this name and think it’s SEE-muss. [name]Struan[/name] - STREW-an? Is that how you pronounce it? Err. Not a fan. [name]Tavish[/name] - Too dainty. [name]Wallace[/name] - I could see it falling into that “nerdy chic” category (i.e. [name]Wyatt[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Simon[/name], [name]Harry[/name], [name]Henry[/name], etc.). I like the idea of [name]Wally[/name] as a nickname.
3 is neutral for me and 5 is the best
[name]Alasdair[/name]-3
[name]Angus[/name]-1 too beefy
[name]Callum[/name]-4
[name]Conall[/name]-4
[name]Duncan[/name]-1 Dunkin Donuts is abundant where I live but if I lived somewhere else this would be a 4
[name]Ferguson[/name]-2
[name]Glenn[/name]-2
[name]Gordon[/name]-3
[name]Grant[/name]-4
[name]Harris[/name]-4
[name]Lachlan[/name]-4
[name]Lewis[/name]-4
[name]Malcolm[/name]-4
[name]Rogan[/name]-3
[name]Ross[/name]-2
[name]Seamus[/name]-5
[name]Struan[/name]-1 Strewn
[name]Tavish[/name]-1 Reminds me of lavish
[name]Wallace[/name]-3
I would also recommend [name]Hamish[/name], [name]Graham[/name], [name]Monroe[/name], [name]Torin[/name] and [name]Lucan[/name].
Thanks for all of the opinions! It’s really helpful to hear other people’s associations with names.
A few comments:
– I’m not a huge fan of the name [name]Struan[/name], but my husband likes it so I’ve left it on the list for now
– I did think of Dunkin Donuts and [name]Duncan[/name] [name]Hines[/name] when I first heard [name]Duncan[/name], but now that I’m past that I think it’s a handsome name. My concern is that other people might never get past those associations.
– I kind of like the name [name]Rogan[/name], but it does conjure images of bald heads, and also makes me think of [name]Seth[/name] [name]Rogen[/name], so that one will probably be off the list soon.
I haven’t read any responses yet to not sway my first impressions, so sorry for any repeats!
[name]Alasdair[/name]- kind of a lot of name for a little boy. I don’t care for [name]Al[/name] as a nn, not sure what a good nn would be for it, but it could work as a name.
[name]Angus[/name]- hard to pull off in the states. [name]Even[/name] though I’ve come across the name so many times in name lists, I still can’t shake the [name]Angus[/name] beef connection.
[name]Callum[/name]- I like this name, don’t mind [name]Cal[/name] (not a favorite tho). Wonder if everyone would think his name is [name]Collin[/name] though?
[name]Conall[/name]- I really like this one. Much fresher than [name]Connor[/name].
[name]Duncan[/name]- love [name]Duncan[/name]! I have a friend named this (in his thirties) and so I think it can definitely work. The nn Dunk is kinda fun.
[name]Ferguson[/name]- quite last namey for me but I prefer it to plain [name]Fergus[/name]. [name]Gus[/name] is a cute nn.
[name]Glenn[/name]- might be a little dated but I think it could work well at many ages.
[name]Gordon[/name]- [name]Gordy[/name] is a tough nn for me to get past.
[name]Grant[/name]- love [name]Grant[/name]. Definitely.
[name]Harris[/name]- also love this one. [name]Harry[/name] is a downside.
[name]Lachlan[/name]- this is on my list. [name]Love[/name] it so much.
[name]Lewis[/name]- I like this one as well. F some reason knowing ‘[name]Lew[/name]’ is the nn and not the spelling ‘lou’ makes a difference to me for the better, though it’s silly as it’s said the same! I don’t like [name]Louis[/name] (lou-ee) but lewis is nice.
[name]Malcolm[/name]- another really good name, could see it age well.
[name]Rogan[/name]- kind of unsure about this one. Like I can’t figure out if it’s a play on [name]Logan[/name] or rogain. [name]Rogue[/name] is a pretty adorable nn for a cheeky little boy.
[name]Ross[/name]- hard to see on a little boy but beyond that it could work.
[name]Seamus[/name]- I like [name]Seamus[/name] and met several living in [name]Ireland[/name]. I have to ignore the ‘shame us’ thought though!
[name]Struan[/name]- I’ve never heard this one. Intriguing! Would people think you’re saying ‘strong?’
[name]Tavish[/name]- I can’t remember if this is pronounced [name]Tay[/name]-vish or tav-ish, but honestly I really like both!
[name]Wallace[/name]- the ln of a friend of mine, so that’s hard for me to ignore, but as a first name it could work too. [name]Wally[/name]!
[name]Alasdair[/name] - 5 - love it
[name]Angus[/name] - 4 - also love it, a little put off by the beef association
[name]Callum[/name] - 5 - love it
[name]Conall[/name] - 3 - not my favorite, but usable
[name]Duncan[/name] - 2 - just ok
[name]Ferguson[/name] - 2 - a little long for my taste and last-name-y, but [name]Fergus[/name] is nice!
[name]Glenn[/name] - 1 - this is dated [name]IMO[/name], and not yet ready for his comeback.
[name]Gordon[/name] - 1 - same as [name]Glenn[/name].
[name]Grant[/name] - 3 - nice.
[name]Harris[/name] - 4 - like it
[name]Lachlan[/name] - 2 - not my favorite, a little tongue-trippy to me
[name]Lewis[/name] - 5 - love it
[name]Malcolm[/name] - 5 - love it
[name]Rogan[/name] - 3 - ok
[name]Ross[/name] - 2 - and [name]Rachel[/name]?
[name]Seamus[/name] - 3 - cute, but easily mispronounced in US
[name]Struan[/name] - 2 - can’t figure out pronunciation myself on this one
[name]Tavish[/name] - 2 - lavish?
[name]Wallace[/name] - 3 - ok
[name]Alasdair[/name] - oh so much more handsome than [name]Alastair[/name]! 5
[name]Angus[/name] - I know a boy named [name]Angus[/name], and he totally pulls it off. I think it’s a pretty rugged name. 3
[name]Callum[/name] - I love the sound, the meaning, and the nn [name]Cal[/name]! 5
[name]Conall[/name] - 2
[name]Duncan[/name] - handsome, familiar, uncommon. 4
[name]Ferguson[/name] - [name]Fergus[/name] is pretty cool, but I don’t like the -son. Makes it too last-namey. 2
[name]Glenn[/name] - prefer [name]Glen[/name], but really like this name. 4
[name]Gordon[/name] - 4
[name]Grant[/name] - 3
[name]Harris[/name] - 3
[name]Lachlan[/name] - 3
[name]Lewis[/name] - sounds like a name for a smart, quirky kind of boy. 4
[name]Malcolm[/name] - lovely! Another name that is familiar, yet underused and uncommon. 4
[name]Rogan[/name] - 2
[name]Ross[/name] - 2
[name]Seamus[/name] - 3
[name]Struan[/name] - 1
[name]Tavish[/name] - 2
[name]Wallace[/name] - 2
