So our first son is [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] “[name_u]Gus[/name_u]” [name_m]Zain[/name_m]. Our plan for #2 was [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. My cousin used it a few months ago and I can’t get passed that even though she calls hers [name_u]Theo[/name_u] not [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
The only other name my husband would consider so far is [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] nn [name_u]Max[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] as a sibset but don’t love [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m].
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] came up today and I love it, but is [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] too close? I tend to use nicknames so would want to use [name_u]Max[/name_u] as a shortened form of [name_m]Magnus[/name_m].
I do not think [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] are too close. I personally prefer [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”. I adore [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is an honor name. I am personally not too fond of [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. I think [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_u]Max[/name_u] sound great as a set. [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_m]Mack[/name_m] ([name_m]Magnus[/name_m] “[name_m]Mack[/name_m]”) would also make a great set.
I think [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] are a good pairing. However, I would use [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]” if you really love it, because for me [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] are separate enough to not cause a ton of confusion. I knew a set of cousins that were both named [name_u]Haley[/name_u], one spelt hers as [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], though. They both went by their full names. My second cousin and I are both [name_f]Emily[/name_f], but I spell mine differently. We don’t live in the same town, and I don’t see her often but we both go by our given names around family (I don’t around friends, though). It gets confusing sometimes, but again, we don’t see her very often. I also had a friend [name_f]Emma[/name_f] growing up, and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f] are very similar, but we never got mixed up. If you were both planning on the same nickname it could be a problem, but I wouldn’t settle on a name you don’t like as much because your cousin chose the same name, especially since you like a different nickname.
That being said, I really like [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] are both really strong names, and I personally prefer [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] ([name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u]) to [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. I, personally, would pick [name_m]Magnus[/name_m].
i think it pairs very well with your first son’s name as well.
as for NN for the name [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], i am not quite sure. i was stumped myself when we thought about it as a name for our son. a lot of people had crude things to say, like “its only syllables! why shorten it!?” to that i say: my brother’s name is [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and we all call him [name_m]Al[/name_m]. shorten away! i dont think max is too far of a leap.
my aunt named her son [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] with a middle name that started with a J (i cant remember at the moment since we arent really that close). she decided she hated people calling him “marc” for short and started calling him MJ. so, in regards to a NN, you could always pick a middle name that the first initial pairs well with the letter M. i cant think of many letters other than J, but if you pick an O middle name, you could call him [name_u]Mo[/name_u] for short? just some suggestions!
happy naming! its the most fun yet frustrating part of the process [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
I think [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] sound different enough to work for brothers. And they’re both lovely names, similar in feel.
I think [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] are too close, however, if you would mainly be calling them [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u], then I think its fine.
I prefer [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but I think its very plain next to [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]. I would say the same of [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]. However, [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m], in my opinion, has a very similar feel to [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], as you would still have [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_u]Max[/name_u].
I think they work well together, and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]! [name_u]Max[/name_u] is a bit of a stretch but works, as does [name_m]Mack[/name_m].
I really like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]” too but a close family member using it not long before would take the shine off it for me, as it sounds like it has for you. If I were you, I’d choose [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] - it’s fab!
