[name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_u]Antonia[/name_u] Gerriss (28) is Clarity’s sister-in-law, aunt to her child and Honor’s wife. A young lawyer who primarily works in family court overseeing parental/guardian rights, Mae’s path was influenced by her being adopted, and the difficult custody battle her maternal grandfather undertook to get her and her brothers’ out of their parents care - as by the time she was four, methamphetamine was the most important thing in Mae’s parents’ lives; overruling their daughter, twin boys and youngest son. Thanks to being the oldest, she has the most vivid memories of the chaotic, barren environment she was initially living in and has sparse contact with her mother now, who’s been in and out of rehab frequently: often making promises to her children that ultimately ring hollow. It was her granddad who walked [name_f]Mae[/name_f] down the isle and who’s listed as an emergency contact for her daughter, [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] " [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] " [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. Upon getting married, [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and [name_u]Honor[/name_u] decided to keep their own surnames due to the closeness they have with their families, and also for ease as [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] has both their surnames: Singleton-Gerris. Mae’s been on maternity leave post-adoption and absolutely loves doting upon [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], reading to her for long periods and taking her out to meet [name_f]Clarity[/name_f] and her cousin who’s very close in age to her.
Becoming a mother has been an eye-opening process for her in more ways than readjusting her sleep schedule and handling food being flung about. [name_f]Mae[/name_f] already knows she wants to continue expanding their family and is open to a range of means for having more children, including IVF and fostering - with the latter being important to her thanks to her career path opening her eyes to this part of social services more. She and [name_u]Honor[/name_u] have briefly had overnight foster placements before - predating Rosie’s adoption - and Mae’s maintained contact with one of the teenagers who stayed with them, a sixteen-year-old girl who was pregnant at the time she stayed. The girl stood out as she didn’t want to give up parental rights and Mae’s continued supporting her for the birth which is now less than a month away. This has led to her and [name_u]Honor[/name_u] seriously considering applying for custody - or asking one of Mae’s brothers’ if the offer doesn’t get approved due to [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] being so young - so she has a stable environment to start raising her unborn child in; as the girls’ sincere dedication to motherhood means a lot to [name_f]Mae[/name_f] given her neglected start in life.
