I’ve really been crushing on [name]Jocelyn[/name] lately, but I have a few questions about it. What’s your general impression of the name? [name]How[/name] does it fit in with [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Liliana[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Eleni[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Serena[/name], etc.? It seems different in a few ways from my other favorites, but I like [name]Jocelyn[/name] enough that I might overlook it.
Secondly, nicknames. Since [name]Josie[/name] is a fairly common (or at least well-loved if not well-used) nn for [name]Jocelyn[/name], could [name]Posy[/name]/[name]Posey[/name] potentially work as a NN for [name]Jocelyn[/name]? Especially with a “P” MN, like [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Portia[/name] or [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]? If [name]Josephine[/name] could get the nn [name]Posy[/name], it doesn’t seem terribly far-off for [name]Jocelyn[/name]… I was just wondering how usable it really was. I’ve been thinking of possibly [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Emilia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] for a combo, or [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Portia[/name] [name]Kate[/name], nn [name]Joss[/name] or [name]Posy[/name]. [name]Emilia[/name], [name]Kate[/name], and [name]Pearl[/name] are family names.
[name]Posey[/name] could absolutely work! That’s actually my very favourite [name]Jocelyn[/name] nn. And [name]Jocelyn[/name] goes really well with [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name].
Thanks! It kind of seems really unlikely, like the sound of [name]Posy[/name] isn’t in [name]Jocelyn[/name] at all, but with a “P” MN I think it could work more.
[name]Jocelyn[/name] does feel a bit trendy to me (a la the -lyn ending), and maybe a bit dated, and I’m a bit worried about it since I’ve vowed off ALL unisex names as FNs, and technically, [name]Jocelyn[/name] is unisex, but it just seems so girly to me and with a sweet nn like [name]Posy[/name], I don’t think I’d be as concerned. Besides, there’s something very classic and regal about [name]Jocelyn[/name], which is part of the appeal to me.
Does anyone have any combo ideas? I’m a bit stumped with [name]Jocelyn[/name]. I’m not really set on [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Portia[/name] [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Emilia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], either. I had thought maybe [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Serena[/name], as [name]Serena[/name]'s a name I’m really loving but I can’t really imagine having a daughter with that name at all…
I’m sorry, I just think of my great-uncle [name]Jocelyn[/name] with it!
I see the girly side, but I can’t get past the man I know with it.
[name]Posy[/name] is a cute idea, a bit of a stretch imo, but if you put a P middle, it can work I think. I agree with the trendy feeling due to the -lyn, I’m so turned off of -lyn endings now from hearing them so much!
Personally, I like the idea of [name]Jocelyn[/name] as a middle name a bit more, [name]Serena[/name] [name]Jocelyn[/name] would be lovely.
I think [name]Posey[/name] isn’t an obvious nn but it could work. I think [name]Joss[/name] is cute and [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Portia[/name] [name]Kate[/name] is really nice.
The namevis different in style from the rest of your list…I think it’s an awesome name but -lyn endings aren’t very fashionable right now while the rest of your list is. I think it’s a great addition and compliments the list!
I don’t think nn’s have to make sense or even be related to one’s name. I think [name]Posey[/name] would work in this case because [name]Josie[/name] [name]Posey[/name] is pretty adorable.
I love [name]Jocelyn[/name]! It’s a favorite that’s not going to get used. I think it fits in nicely with the other names on your list. It’s classic, and romantic sounding, and beautiful. [name]Josie[/name] works fine as a nn [name]IMO[/name].
Ha. Thanks. [name]Josie[/name]'s actually what I’m trying to avoid, though. I don’t really like it at all, and I already know a little girl named [name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name], so I’d like to avoid that if at all possible. I love [name]Posy[/name], and [name]Joss[/name], and even [name]Jossie[/name]/Josci/Jocey (not sure how you would spell it–[name]JOSS[/name]-ee).
I am a bit worried about the trendy -lyn ending, as a few have mentioned, but since [name]Gwendolyn[/name] holds onto her class, I thought [name]Jocelyn[/name] might be able to, too. She’s ranked since the 1920s, so she almost seems sort of classic, which is what I love about it. I’m still tossing it around, and I do have several names to nix for my girls’ list, anyway, so we’ll see if [name]Jocelyn[/name] sticks. I’d love to hear more thoughts! And possibly more combo ideas.
I really like [name]Jocelyn[/name], nn’s [name]Joss[/name] or [name]Jossie[/name]. I actually really like the name [name]Josie[/name], but never would have thought of it as a nn for [name]Jocelyn[/name] - so thanks for the idea! Personally I think [name]Posey[/name] is a bit of a stretch, but it is cute, and nn’s are often a stretch but they still seem to work. I do agree that with a P middle name, it’s a little more of a logical nn. [name]Posey[/name] just seems like a cute little pet name that you could really use with any name, even if it doesn’t sound similar.
My cousin has a [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Grace[/name] nn [name]Jossie[/name] (not sure if that is how they spell it, but that would be my first guess). I think it is a very elegant, wearable name and a cute nickname. I do love the idea of [name]Posey[/name] as a nn for it, though. I am a fan of [name]Posey[/name] for [name]Josephine[/name] and I don’t see why you couldn’t use it for [name]Jocelyn[/name] as well. I love [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Portia[/name] [name]Kate[/name], out of your ideas. It has a really great feel to it.
Oh sorry! Misread your post! Jossy is a cute nickname too ^^ I think more people would go there than [name]Josie[/name]. If you’re really worried about the Y, spell it Jocelen or [name]Jocelin[/name] but I think the Y is suppose to be there in [name]Jocelyn[/name] (which makes it not trendy ^^)
I don’t really see any way for [name]Posy[/name] to be a legit nickname for [name]Josephine[/name], it sounds nothing like it and their meanings are nothing alike. That’s like naming your unborn son [name]Samuel[/name] and calling him [name]Ham[/name], because it kinda rhymes with the nickname [name]Sam[/name]… I just don’t understand! I do love [name]Jocelyn[/name] thigh, it just sounds so pretty, and really isn’t that long, I bet people would enjoy saying that name like it is
lol. I don’t really think it’s that much of a stretch for [name]Josephine[/name], since the P is in it, anyway, old nicknames switch out letters and stuff, like [name]Bill[/name] for [name]William[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] for [name]John[/name] and stuff. There’re really old connections that we really don’t understand, but they were there years and years ago. Suffice it to say, [name]Posy[/name] is definitely a recognized nn for [name]Josephine[/name]. Not as common as [name]Josie[/name] or [name]Jo[/name], but still very acceptable. I agree that [name]Jocelyn[/name] is lovely on its own and I would probably call her [name]Jocelyn[/name] half the time if I used it, but [name]Posy[/name] is a longtime favorite of mine and it would honor my mom, so I’m looking for somewhere on my list to put it. I figure with a “P” MN it could work for [name]Jocelyn[/name]–I’d probably call her [name]Joss[/name], [name]Posy[/name], and [name]Jocelyn[/name] just about equally.
@dantea - I think you’re right, haha–all the other spellings look so much trendier than [name]Jocelyn[/name]–[name]Jocelin[/name], [name]Joselin[/name], Jocelen, etc. I’ve heard that [name]Jocelyne[/name] is the feminine variant of [name]Jocelyn[/name], which is the masculine/unisex form, but the “E” on the end of [name]Jocelyne[/name] just looks too superfluous to me. I tried to convince myself of it when I first came across it, but it just seems to be too much, and I think people would try and say joss-ah-line or joss-ah-leen or joss-line/joss-leen or something, too.
I’m also tossing around [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Clara[/name]–wdyt of those? I’d probably use [name]Pearl[/name] as the second MN in those cases, just so I could keep [name]Posy[/name].
I love [name]Posy[/name] as well, I’m using it by itself as a first name. Still don’t see a connection, the p makes an f sound in [name]Josephine[/name]… I think if no one can explain the connection we should let it go, [name]Bill[/name] for [name]William[/name] makes sense, I’ve never heard of someone calling [name]John[/name] ‘[name]Jack[/name]’, lol! But [name]Bill[/name] is only one letter away from the spelling of [name]William[/name], not the case of [name]Josephine[/name]/[name]Posy[/name]… If you like [name]Posy[/name] then just use [name]Posy[/name], it’s great by itself, and lends itself to great nn options that you won’t hear elsewhere
[name]Josie[/name] is the primary nickname for [name]Josephine[/name]. [name]Josie[/name] rhymes with [name]Posey[/name]. [name]Jossie[/name] (the nickname for [name]Jocelyn[/name]) doesn’t rhyme with [name]Posey[/name].
I think [name]Posy[/name] kinda works for [name]Josephine[/name] because it has a p in it.
I can’t see it working for [name]Jocelyn[/name]. Maybe with a p middle name. [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] nn [name]Posy[/name]…maybe…
I went to school with a [name]Joslyn[/name], so I think of her. Kind of a mixture of tough girl and [name]Shakespeare[/name] character, lol.
I don’t think it’s far away from your favorites. It’s similar in my mind to [name]Serena[/name] and [name]Eleni[/name], but has some of the classic feel of [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name].
