What do you think of these girl names I’ve found recently… should I put any on my list?
[name]Sosie[/name]
[name]Selby[/name]
[name]Hollis[/name]
Aderyn
Doli (Navajo name meaning “bluebird” my husband pronounces it like [name]Dolly[/name], but he thinks the original pronunciation is more like DAHL-ee with a long H sound.)
[name]Nova[/name]
”ine
I’ve always loved the name [name]Nova[/name]! A little while ago I was considering picking the name [name]Novella[/name] and using [name]Nova[/name] as a nickname, but I can’t stand picking a name just for the nickname so it didn’t stick. [name]Nova[/name] could work by itself but I’m not brave enough to do it!
[name]Sosie[/name] – This is cute, but doesn’t feel like an official name. Would make a great nn for [name]Persephone[/name]!
[name]Selby[/name] – This is neat! People will often confuse it for [name]Shelby[/name] though.
[name]Hollis[/name] – This sounds like a fresh take on [name]Holly[/name]. I like it!
Aderyn – It sounds cool. I’ve never heard of it before. Is there a story behind it?
Doli (Navajo name meaning “bluebird” my husband pronounces it like [name]Dolly[/name], but he thinks the original pronunciation is more like DAHL-ee with a long H sound.) – This is neat. Would definitely have spelling issues though.
[name]Nova[/name] – nms, but cool.
”ine – nms
I think I knew a [name]Selby[/name] once, way back in my childhood. It’s interesting.
I like [name]Sosie[/name] and Doli. I think [name]Hollis[/name] is a great name, but not for a girl.
[name]How[/name] do you pronounce the last one?
I started a list for myself (sigh, name nerd) of names rarely suggested, just to have it handy in case people were looking for something other than [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name]. [name]Sosie[/name] was one that drew me in. I think it works on its own and as a nickname. [name]Love[/name] it!
[name]Aine[/name] is pronounced like AWN-YA I believe, that’s the way I’m pronouncing it anyway. I worry about it being too Irish, since I’m in no way Irish at all. I also really like [name]Saoirse[/name] and have the same doubts.
Doli I think I like more in theory, I would love to have a Navajo name to honor my husband’s heritage but unfortunately all the Navajo names I’ve heard have been atrocious.
[name]Sosie[/name] I’ve always loved since I read [name]Kevin[/name] Bacon’s daughter is named [name]Sosie[/name] in a magazine or something, it sounds so familiar yet so exotic at the same time. I think I’ll add it to my list.
Aderyn is Welsh for bird, my great grandmother was a Welsh immigrant. I like it, but I worry it sounds too trendy or made up to a non name nerd.
[name]Saoirse[/name] is one of my faves! I do think Aderyn sounds very trendy, and [name]Sosie[/name] wouldn’t age well. Doli is to similar to [name]Dolly[/name] for my taste.
I really like [name]Hollis[/name] and [name]Nova[/name]! [name]Holly[/name] could be a nn for [name]Hollis[/name] as well. It reminds me of the book Pictures of [name]Hollis[/name] Woods, and sounds slightly vintage. I also love [name]Nova[/name]! It’s celestial, but usable. None of the others seem usable to me. Thanks for the list!
[name]Sosie[/name] - love it but really only as a nickname…[name]Shoshana[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Persephone[/name] as pp said, etc.
[name]Selby[/name] - seems too troublesome with [name]Shelby[/name] confusion. Like the idea though.
[name]Hollis[/name] - very, very masculine to me, but, it’s a reasonable option. I feel like you’d be setting yourself up for other masculine-named girls in teh futre.
Aderyn - I like it!
Doli (Navajo name meaning “bluebird” my husband pronounces it like [name]Dolly[/name], but he thinks the original pronunciation is more like DAHL-ee with a long H sound.) I would guess it’d be more like [name]Doe[/name]-lee? Anyway, it’s cool, spelling and prn seem inevitable, would you set yourself up for other Navajo names? [name]Love[/name] the meaning bluebird!
[name]Nova[/name] - pretty awesome, growing on me. I find it a little “too much” on some levels, but it’s a great sound.
”ine - if you’re worried about it seeming too Irish, I’d just spell it [name]Anya[/name] or go with [name]Anna[/name] nn [name]Anya[/name] (a common pattern in Slavic languages), if you like just the look, I think Aino (Eye-no) is a name in Finnish, although if you’re worried about not being Irish, you’re probably also not Finnish. But I think [name]Aine[/name] might be used in Finnish too ? (Eye-nay).
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sosie[/name]! The others aren’t really my style, but I think [name]Sosie[/name]'s adorable. I love it as a nn for Sosia, [name]Shoshana[/name], [name]Sophie[/name]/[name]Sophia[/name], etc.–I’m sure there’s a lot of other options, but I can’t really think of them right now. I’m not sure how well [name]Sosie[/name] would work on its own, but I do adore it.
I never thought of it being short for [name]Shoshana[/name], but it makes sense. [name]Susie[/name] = [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Sosie[/name] = [name]Shoshana[/name]
I like [name]Shoshana[/name] a lot but I worry it sounds ultra feminine next to [name]Rowan[/name]… I’m actually having that problem with all my girl picks right now.
