New here with names used already and a baby to name

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Edited to say, baby named now, given on post 22.

I join in pretty dire circumstances (which I don’t want to go into) which takes a lot of the shine out of having a new baby (and only girl!) to name but I have lurked the past few days and thought you name nerds would find my children’s names interesting, and you could perhaps hold our hands in naming the littlest- who is 6 weeks on [name_f]Monday[/name_f]!

I am nervous about putting full names here and may edit out some. Also please lmk if the way I have listed (random dots) is pointless or needs altering.

BTW surname is Irish/ Scottish, begins with L, ends with N, 5 letters and commonly used as a first name now, some of you may possibly guess it.

My mum is Greek Cypriot in background.

OK, boy no.1 is [name_u]Mika[/name_u] [name_m]Zak[/name_m].arias. His dad was [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and with Finnish granny (although pronounced as we did would be written Miika in Finland- didn’t fancy that!). My mum had a friend called [name_m]Zak[/name_m] (super common name at the time) but I wanted a Greek addition and it reminded me of Greek for sugar.

Boy 2 Dem.itris [name_f]Su[/name_f].nsh.ine. I had many miscarriages between these two and wanted a ‘fertile’ name. He is 10, does get called [name_f]Demi[/name_f] (a fear of my ex…) and loves his middle name.

No.3 with ‘new’ partner (Irish) is [name_m]Man[/name_m].anna.n Yi.an.nis. Partner dead set on Manann.an (pronounced more like Mon a non) and I wasn’t keen but took to it on grounds we use Manan which is actually a lovely name in its own right and whilst obscure it doesn’t sound it! Yiannis was for the Johns in the family but I don’t think any felt the honour sadly!

No.4 Am.ergi.n (pronounced Averin) [name_m]Arte[/name_m].mis [name_m]Le[/name_m].fte.ris. We pushed the boat out here! We do have name regret about the spelling of the first name. We probably should have done more research with Irish speakers as Amergin, whilst the top spelling by far on Google is an appalling anglicisation. The long Irish version was extremely long and it is only much later we found an intermediate version… Most translations give this ancient name the pronunciation of Avergin but Irish speakers have told us the -in version is, in their opinion, more likely going from the lengthy original Irish spelling (and the name would have been in existence before Irish was written anyway!). [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] my partner wanted as we were camping beside a forest when I went into labour (and it has a sibling thing going too) and Lefter.is as I thought he was my last and I always wanted to name a girl Elefth.eria… (I actually love Lef.teris even more perhaps but the dads didn’t want to risk the nn Leftie…).

So, we were shocked by the girl… Partner wanted a mythological Irish name but not a minor player and Irish seems a bit short on girl names of that type. Have considered [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] as an obvious major strong character but it is very common in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] and we want to avoid that. Also [name_f]Anu[/name_f] or [name_f]Danu[/name_f] but not feeling love and [name_f]Danu[/name_f] has people asking if after a singer called [name_u]Dana[/name_u]…

I think DP may now be serious about Elefteria (adjusted spelling I just came across recently that we both prefer as making it less of a mouthful) though he thinks nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and I think that is very common now (I didn’t like it much beforehand either). It seems to have huge nickname potential however! What would be your favourite nn for Elefteria? Quite likely with one of the Irish names as middle name…

We are very picky and specific but would welcome thoughts. And what do you think of my ensemble so far?!

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f]! Your kids’ names are so interesting and meaningful, I think my favorite is [name_m]Demitrius[/name_m] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]!

Elefteria seems like the right name for your little girl. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of siblings have similar names for all sorts of reasons. Since it is a variation and is his second middle name, I say it is just fine to grant to her.

Oh yeah, I find it quite cute them having a sibling shared name.

Our issues with Elefteria is just it being a bit long winded (and not part of Irish legend for my partner’s part!).

It’s ‘Demitris’ btw, I am not keen on the -ius ending for some reason. We call him Demitri (or [name_f]Demi[/name_f]) loosely following Greek norm.

Finally just came across thread here people not calling boys girls’ names and note that whilst two names I have used are goddesses on boys (so they do have girls’ names?) they are in masculine format for their origin- in Greece or [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m] traditional would be for example [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] or [name_f]Demetria[/name_f], so used as is (with -is ending) for girls is a ‘boys name’. I have absolutely no judgment about this btw, just adding my comment!

What about Eftalia/Eftalya instead ?

[name_f]Aine[/name_f] Eftalia
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f] Eftalia
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f] Eftalia
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] Eftalia

It’s the meaning of Eleftheria! (I can’t find Eftalia online and haven’t come across it? Intrigued. Reminds me a little of sheftalia! Is it Turkish? My mum lives in Turkey). I like it that it means [name_u]Freedom[/name_u]/ free but isn’t a hippy name (in [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m]). I also like [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] for same but living in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] it is very common. [name_f]Aine[/name_f] and [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] are very common here also, [name_f]Olwyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] are Welsh I think?

I’m just popping in to say that I love all your name choices! I can’t advise on uncommon Irish or Greek names. For a girl named Eleftheria, if you don’t want to use the nn [name_m]Eli[/name_m] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], I would go with Theri/[name_f]Teri[/name_f].

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Effie[/name_f] as a nn for Elefteria?

Hah sheftalia must be şeftali (peach) right ? I searched for Celtic Goddesses names so it is possible [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]/[name_f]Olwen[/name_f] are Welsh and not Irish but that’s because I specifically searched for [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] names and not girl names - hmm I really like Eleftheria - Eftalya was a Greek singer born in 1891 in Istanbul - she was really famous under the stage name Denizkızı (mermaid) Eftalya  here are some Irish girl names I like

Ailbe
[name_f]Aisling[/name_f]
[name_f]Alannah[/name_f]
Aurnia
[name_f]Brianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f]
[name_f]Deirdre[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Moira[/name_f]
Neasa
[name_f]Orlaith[/name_f]
[name_f]Roisin[/name_f]
[name_f]Sinead[/name_f]

Er, no, sheftalia is a Cypriot (Greek and Turkish) kebab! Apparently from Turkish word for peach alright but less an ideal word picture for a baby!

I wonder why no easy search for Eftalya? Interesting name and I love the shared history and culture of that part of the world.

A lot of the names you suggested are very common here. I like Neasa, which I don’t think is, but doubt DP would approve of the importance, or perceived lack of. I will try him on other middle names but at almost 6 weeks and Eleftheria a favourite of mine for nearly two decades will probably push for commitment to that for first name.

I like [name_f]Effie[/name_f].

That’s one I hadn’t thought of.

Kebab ? Oh wow I wonder whats the connection - since I live in Turkey I can’t know for sure which Irish names are uncommon but maybe you will have better access to baby name lists of [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] if they have similar lists to the US/UK ones ?

I didn’t realise it wasn’t known in Turkey as my mum makes it for her husband.

Been through a load of lists! There are obscure names but they are not major players in mythological terms as DP would want!

From Wikipedia, but I don’t know how they sound in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]:

[name_f]Cliona[/name_f] (queen of the Banshees)
[name_f]Etain[/name_f]/[name_f]Aideen[/name_f] (myth heroine)
[name_f]Eithne[/name_f]/
[name_f]Deirdre[/name_f]
Aibell
[name_f]Grainne[/name_f]

[name_f]Cliona[/name_f] is quite common as is [name_f]Grainne[/name_f] (although possibly fallen from favour) and [name_f]Deirdre[/name_f] old fashioned common. [name_f]Etain[/name_f] would maybe be a good choice but we have issues with a woman of same name. Not keen on [name_f]Eithne[/name_f], especially with Elefteria. I like Aibhell (believe would be bh and thus a V sound), had considered myself. [name_m]Will[/name_m] put to DP for firming up middle name (sure he has seen and discounted everything though!).

BTW I always thought of [name_f]Aideen[/name_f] as a feminine of [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] (“little fire”) which actually is partner’s name and no plan to give a parent sounding name.

Some more nn ideas for Eleftheria:

[name_f]Lettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Leta[/name_f]
Elf
Fera/Feria

[name_f]Lettie[/name_f] I like too!

Wow, I just looked at top Irish names list and it seems Irish names are not very popular at all atm (in circles I have been in there are much more of them) so actually almost all the names I think of as popular will be on teens and adults. We are still dithering. Surprised we haven’t had a letter, sure I had one much earlier than this before- I think the cut off is meant to be 6 weeks, as it was when I had my eldest two in [name_f]England[/name_f]- with the younger we went in at 6 weeks on the day.

It seems we get 3 months! It’s already having me nutty with everyone asking her name.

It is done! She is Elefteria [name_f]Danu[/name_f] L  nickname… Elfy!

Not sure how [name_f]Etain[/name_f] is ranking in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], but given that she’s a huuuuuge mythological figure it is probably fairly common. Still, looking into less popular variations might be worth it.
