[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! I am a 17 year old girl looking for a new name.
My name is [name_u]Ashtyn[/name_u]. I absolutely hate it. It sounds like a boys’ name to me, and I don’t feel like it matches my personality. I have always been a girly girl, and [name_u]Ashtyn[/name_u] is not a girly name.
So I am looking for a new one. I have made a list, but I am not sure if any of these ones are “the one” yet. This is it so far:
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]
[name_f]Kylie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
My middle name is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and I plan on keeping it. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions for me? Thank you!
My favorite from your list is [name_f]Luella[/name_f]. It is playful, frilly, and feminine. I also like @greyblue’s suggestions of [name_f]Holly[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f].
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] give me similar vibes.
Lots of nice names in your list. I notice the Irish name [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] and wondered if you’d considered [name_f]Aisling[/name_f]? I met an Irish woman with that name who pronounced it “[name_u]Ash[/name_u]-ling” and I thought it was so beautiful. From what I’ve read [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-leen is an alternate pronunciation and the name means dream, vision, and is also a style of Irish poetry. Obviously not the name for you if you’re looking for something totally different from your current name, but to me it’s a very feminine spin to it.
From your list, I love [name_f]Luella[/name_f], [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
From Previous Posters, I love [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Holly[/name_f] (!), [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] (I mostly love this name as a Namberry member goes by [name_f]Gia[/name_f] and I think that is such a cool mix of edgy and feminine), [name_f]Clara[/name_f] & [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
Suggestions for girly names.
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]/ [name_f]Tallula[/name_f] - NN [name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Amaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
Can [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] be the first name? You could just swap the names around without legal documents, I know a friend who goes by their middle name. Or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]? I have always found [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] very feminine.
My personal favourites from your list are [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. It has to be the right name for you though, whether we on Nameberry like it or not!
Some things to think about:
Is it important to have a name that “feels your age”? Would you mind if people thought you were younger than you are because of your name?
[name_f]Kylie[/name_f] feels the most like a 17 year old’s name to me from your list- I haven’t checked the stats, but I think it would have been one of the more popular ones in your age group.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] are VERY popular for little girls right now, the under 10 or so age group. So when people hear the name, they may expect someone much younger. Also, this is unlikely to be an issue for you now, but in 15 years when all these little Charlottes and Avas are adults, you are likely to know/come across many others with that name - since once out of school, you encounter so many more people from a different age group to you.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you mind if your name is difficult to pronounce and/or spell?
If you don’t live in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] or the UK, the majority of people will have no idea how to pronounce or spell [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]. [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] has a couple different pronunciations - oo-la-lee, you-la-lee - and is also uncommon enough that many people would have trouble spelling it. [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] may also run into a few problems here.
[name_m]How[/name_m] does it sound with the rest of your name, and does this bother you?
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are a bit difficult to say because of all the Ls. Try saying them all with your last name / middle and last names and see what sounds best to you.
Like a previous poster, I immediately thought of [name_f]Aisling[/name_f], but IDK if you want something completely different from [name_u]Ashtyn[/name_u]…
I took your list of possibilities & tried to think of names that were similar or started w/the same letter & that were definitely feminine:
Can you be [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] from your middle? Maybe or switch them or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]? You can say ‘I go by my middle name’ anytime anyone says anything … Or [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] from [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]… [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]? Something like that?
I would try and start clear of the top names for the five and under crowd this year and the last 10 or so years…
If you’re legally chAnging it at 18? I would personally leave an aspect of the original name. But if you ha te your first name I’m sorry to hear that and [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you find a name that makes you feel like yo urself.
If we are being more creative [name_f]Bella[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Ansley[/name_f] ?
