I’ve stumbled across some wonderful names in this NB forum and elsewhere which I absolutely love…I’d like to know your thoughts on the following names:
Valhalla
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_f]Kara[/name_f] (the name of a Valkyrie/ Valkyrja meaning “the wild and stormy one”)
Valkyrja* (pronounced valkeara[?]): the Old Norse word for Valkyrie from [name_u]Val[/name_u] = “bravery” and Kyrja meaning “The Chooser” as they choose the heroic from the battlefield and take them to [name_f]Heaven[/name_f]/ Valhalla).
Kyrja* (Norse name meaning ‘the chooser’)
Also, can you suggest other similar, evocative names? And do you think these names are as “lovely” as [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]India[/name_f] and other names listed in my signature?
First off, I absolutely [name_f]ADORE[/name_f]/[name_u]LOVE[/name_u]/ADMIRE and everything else your name taste. We’re on the same level as in having bohemian, fresh, multicultural, etc type of entities for our future gifts.
I’ll give you a honest opinion since I would like that from everyone else.
Valhalla: I can’t really imagine it on a child, but more in a fantasy book full of green, blue, pink, violet flowers and little sun children running around.
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]: Shakespearian names is the real deal. I love the vibe this gives off. Very nice name to give a little girl to inspire her.
[name_f]Kara[/name_f]: I don’t like this name very well. It feels too overused as I know I [name_f]Kara[/name_f] or two along with millions of variations.
Here are my favorite names form your signature:
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (that’s just awesome together)
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaska[/name_f]
[name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] (another awesome set)
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (I prefer the [name_u]Ivory[/name_u], but this is cute)
[name_f]Titania[/name_f] (all I see is fairies)
[name_f]Ferelith[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] [name_f]Leda[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] (amazing set/ I can’t pull off two mn’s)
Utopia (Wow. Why isn’t this being used?)
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]
Valhalla is the equivalent of heaven in Norse mythology, so it would be really weird to see it as a name. [name_u]Hero[/name_u] is fine, although I prefer [name_f]Hera[/name_f], while [name_f]Kara[/name_f] is just not my style.
What about Illyria, Gwenllian, [name_f]Angharad[/name_f], [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f], [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Indira[/name_f], or [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]?
I’m unfortunately not big into [name_u]Hero[/name_u] as a given name either; it just feels a little cartoonish. One of those names that your six-year-old would wear proudly, but maybe not your thirty-six year old graduating from a doctorate program. Keep it as a nickname, especially as there are SO many amazing names to be gleaned from mythology. And [name_f]Kara[/name_f]'s just not my style.
I like Valhalla actually, but mostly as a middle name. [name_u]Hero[/name_u]… I prefer it as a nickname (maybe for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]?). [name_f]Kara[/name_f] is absolutely lovely.
~ [name_m]Hi[/name_m] Southern.maple, great to hear your opinion too…from your list I love [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Indira[/name_f], or [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]…
~Thanx for your feedback Kimmigrace…good to hear an alternative POV…
~ LOL Rainydaygarden…still love the name though…and good to hear you like [name_u]Hero[/name_u]…cheers!!
~ Thanx for your reply Ottertails…I do like ‘weird’ names but I get not everyone does…and yes, I do love [name_f]Cara[/name_f] too (meaning friend in Irish and dear in Latin), but I’ve recently read that [name_f]Kara[/name_f] is the name of a Valkyrie/ Valkyrja meaning “The [name_m]Wild[/name_m] and [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] One” which I think is wonderful & romantic…
~ C@29, so wonderful to hear you like Valhalla!!! YEAH!!! And the idea of [name_u]Hero[/name_u] as the nn for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is brilliant… cheers!! And yes, [name_f]Kara[/name_f] is “absolutely lovely” as you mentioned…
