I do love these names, and some will probably end up on my new list, but many just feel
a) quite predictable
b) too same-y to use together
c) just not something I’d actually use on an actualreal baby (but I still love the names)
d) too Nameberry-trendy
e) a little tired
My new-ish list (or the foundations thereof) looks something like:
So my questions/tasks for you Berries are as follows.
Help me with the [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names! Which do you think I should love best? Make me love it. Combos?
[name_m]New[/name_m] name suggestions - preferably rare-ish names, Cornish/similar etymology names [which for some weird reason I have a weakness for], or classic variations than no-one uses [[name_f]Clementina[/name_f]], but anything that you guys feel fits into my style. I also love lovely meanings - e.g. “song thrush”, “dew of the sea”, “mild; merciful”, “white rose”.
Which of the names above do you think I should keep? Why? (Again: make me love it!) Any combos?
I like the [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names, too, but they all feel a bit ‘expected’. I’m trying to figure out some variations that are more intriguing - perhaps Roselet
LidaRose
Rosemilla
Rosenwyn
Rosewilde
Roselaine
Islarose
I like almost all the names you’ve listed…I think no name is unusable unless it has a known, negative connotation or connection, and for me personally if it can not be shortened into a likeable/usable/familiar-enough nn. And most of your names do that beautifully! So I say make some combos and see what other things about the names draw you to them - fun initials, unexpected nn’s, family significance…maybe then you can pick a newish top five you can mull over for a bit. Good luck!
Ps -picking from your names, if I met a sibset named [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], Roselet, [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f], & [name_f]Klementina[/name_f] (this is how they spell it at the beautiful library in Prague!) I would swoon! Also - all those names are so different but lush and interesting and bonus points: they all have -el in them which visually I like.
The problem I have with [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] is that I absolutely adore the meaning of [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (“dew of the sea”) but probably prefer [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] in terms of the actual name, which also would allow me to use [name_f]Mariam[/name_f] or another [name_f]Mary[/name_f] variation. But [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] is also lovely . . .
I do like [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] and [name_f]Lenore[/name_f], but feel that I can’t have [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] AND those two on the same list . . . and I much prefer [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]! Many of the snags I find in my list are because I love two or even three names that are very similar.
Meraud is very pretty, unfortunately I think of Medraut from [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_m]Sutcliff[/name_m]'s Sword at Sunset. (It’s also another Mer-/[name_f]Mar[/name_f]- name! I like them too much!) But it does bear consideration. And, of course, it’s Cornish!
My favourite from your suggestions is probably [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], which I have considered before. [name_f]Olwen[/name_f] is another, but I haven’t properly weighed that in the balance yet, so maybe it’s time to do so.
Thank you, I shall consider your suggestions carefully!
I get you about expected! Rosemilla, Roselaine, Roselet, and Rosewilde are all lovely, but I do very much want names with meanings I like - and obviously unless they’re “proper” names they won’t. Although I could try to translate the elements of the names, I suppose, and become a linguistics student . . . that’s an intriguing option actually.
Corelia is really pretty, however [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is also on my list (or rather my long list of magnificent proportions!). I also like a lot of -lia/-elia names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know the meaning? I looked it up on Behind the Name but there wasn’t a lot of info because it was user-submitted.
[name_f]Odessa[/name_f] is gorgeous! And [name_f]Fiamma[/name_f] is rather pretty, too, though I think I prefer [name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f]. I don’t usually go for place names but I’m fairly certain that [name_f]Odessa[/name_f] could grow on me quite a lot.
Yes, I should certainly try the combo game, it’s crazy how the right combo can completely change your perception of a name! It can be hard though when you already sort of “know” the names you might put as second and third names and so you don’t have that fresh viewpoint that can really make a combo zing.
I like all the names on your list. I think my favourites are [name_f]Clementina[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. I would use [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Mariam[/name_f], nn [name_f]Mira[/name_f] is so cute.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is a beautiful name, with a classic vibe, great nickname potential and a fab meaning (dew of the sea). It’s also my middle name… Not that I’m biased or anything Seriously though, [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is gorgeous and underrated and quite honestly it’s the only part of my name that I have never ever doubted or wished was different in some way… I also lovee [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], so pretty and unexpected but packs a feisty punch into just four letters also.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful but rather expected. I’m not personally such a fan of [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] though, they just don’t work for me… Though I certainly don’t hate them!
I’m rubbish at suggesting names, but some names I think you might like are:
I think that your new list should look like this:
Ismeria-Never heard this before, but it’s beautiful!
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]-Such a pretty classic.
[name_f]Maura[/name_f]-Another one I’d never heard before!
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]-Not quite my style but i can appreciate it from afar
[name_u]Simone[/name_u]-[name_f]Lovely[/name_f]
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]-[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is such a cute nickname!
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f]-[name_u]Love[/name_u] love love this!
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]-One of my favourite Scandi names
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]-Pretty, though [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] reference is quite strong!
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]-My beautiful name…
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]-One of my all time favourites
[name_f]Magdalen/name_f-Not a fan of Magdelen, Magdelena is so strong and beautiful.
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]-Too pretty to take off your list!
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]-I could never get bored of [name_f]Violet[/name_f]!
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]-I have had the same issue with this name. I love it, but it’s so nameberry popular and beginning to get everywhere popular… Having said that, some names are popular for a reason, and I think this one is too perfect to let go of.
i have a client from [name_u]Brazil[/name_u] whose name is [name_f]Rosella[/name_f] ([name_f]Rose[/name_f]-[name_f]Ella[/name_f]) which I think is a beautiful, unique name.
I love the names [name_f]Clementina[/name_f] (stunning) and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], although I actually prefer [name_f]Isolda[/name_f] (it’s a little more lyrical and isn’t likely to incur teasing “is old”.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is beautiful, I do wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately I know a few and it feels more popular than I’d like, in my circles anyway. And I love [name_f]Mariam[/name_f]/[name_f]Maryam[/name_f] just as much.
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Finola[/name_f], [name_f]Ondine[/name_f], and [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] are my favourites from your list. I seem to pick all the ‘M’ names I can find! I don’t like [name_u]Holland[/name_u], [name_u]Nouvel[/name_u], or [name_f]Elizabella[/name_f] (for some reason that gives me the shivers), but [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] and [name_f]Aquilia[/name_f] are ones I haven’t considered. Trying to decide whether I like [name_f]Ornella[/name_f] or not - I’m not mad on the ‘Orn’ sound, but I’m not sure whether I’m just unused to it or not!
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] is interesting because it seems to be becoming more stylish and yet has a very Victorian suffragette-y feel (maybe just because I admire [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] Fawcett and find it irritating how much more celebrated the Pankhursts are). I think I prefer the other variations/similar names ([name_f]Melisande[/name_f], [name_f]Melicent[/name_f]/[name_f]Melisent[/name_f], [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]) but I shall keep it in mind.
I like [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] out of your list. I didn’t know [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] meant “shining sea”, that’s beautiful! I just have to shake the associations with [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m] (not a bad character, I just automatically think of her when I hear the name) and it could well be up there with the other hundred or so Mer- or [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- names [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] is a long-term ‘favourite’, it’s just other names seem to keep pipping it to the post. Perhaps I should invest some time in considering it.
Oh, I do love Ismeria! I just WISH it had a lovely meaning . . . I really really love it though. I think I shall pretend it’s a variation of [name_f]Ismay[/name_f], which in turn could be a variation of [name_f]Esme[/name_f], and thence steal the meaning of “beloved” . . . unless I could do something with the “mer” and “is” and cobble together a meaning myself.
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] is my new name crush. I haven’t read HP and don’t plan to, so that wouldn’t be a problem for me personally. I love the meaning. In fact I’m pretty sure [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] ([name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] is an Italian variant) would be one of my top names if it hadn’t gone through that most unfortunate phase of popularity. It’s just so gorgeous. I really hope it can get past the [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] era soon.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be right up there, it’s just the last name would be a bit awkward . . . [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is definitely Nameberry popular I think I’d find it easier to let go of because I also love [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].
I apologize for not having time to answer all three of your questions
However I would like to suggest the name [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f] which I think is really lovely and rare since I have only ever met one person named that. She goes by [name_f]Sanna[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Sun[/name_f]-ah not [name_m]Zan[/name_m]-ah) which I think is a cute nickname! It could also have the nickname [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], I dont really like sort names but long names with cute nicknames like this I adore!
I would like to suggest the names: [name_f]Maren[/name_f] which means the one that comes from the sea and [name_f]Novalie[/name_f] with [name_f]Nova[/name_f] as a nickname which means something like star but is a little bit more complicated than that
That’s totally fine, it was a horrifically long post and any input is greatly welcomed!
I do really like [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f], but unfortunately it’s my cousin’s name. That probably wouldn’t automatically rule it out, especially with a nickname other than [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (which I’m not mad on anyway), but it does mean that the other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names I like have a slight advantage. [name_f]Sanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Sanne[/name_f] is my preferred nickname for [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Susannah[/name_f].
[name_f]Novalie[/name_f] is gorgeous!! I could quite fall in love But I see what you mean, the etymology is rather confused . . .
Mixed feelings about [name_f]Rosella[/name_f]. Not sure what I think of it - I can see it as a beautiful name, but then there’s another part of me that isn’t so keen. Not sure why.
I have considered [name_f]Isolda[/name_f] before, it’s more intuitive and makes the pronunciation issue easier. I do love the name.
[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Petra[/name_f], and [name_f]Demelza[/name_f] are all very good suggestions. I like [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], but the nn problem is difficult (I’m not mad on [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_u]Beau[/name_u]). [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is perhaps more vintage than I usually go for, but certainly a possibility. [name_f]Demelza[/name_f] is beautiful. I find the Poldark connection a teensy bit annoying though.
I also have mixed feelings about [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is much more queenly and regal, and has a prettier meaning, and precisely for those reasons is probably going to be more popular. Dilemma!
