Once again, I’m looking for your help. Not so long ago, I posted a thread asking for your opinions on the names [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and [name_f]Samantha[/name_f]. I thought DH and I had come to a decision to call our daughter [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] when she arrives, however he recently saw the name [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] in a book and decided he really loves the name. It reminds me of a character in an [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] game I used to play as a child, and while I loved the character, it has no other connotations for me that I can connect with really.
I like the possible nicknames for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] more than I do for [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and here in the UK, it would be a more natural choice than [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], but it’s just really thrown me for a loop. Any impressions you have of the names would be hugely helpful.
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is very popular compared to [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], but it’s a lovely name. It has grown on me over the last year. I used to think it sounded too much like Sofa.
I always have a soft spot for [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] means wisdom. It’s elegant, soft, beautiful, and… totally deserve to be on the top of popularity rank. If you don’t mind that part, I say go for it.
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]. Meaning legendary princess, if I remember correctly. It has a stronger sound but also airier at the same time. Well, that’s how I think about [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f].
I think you should go with [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] (or [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]) because there are endless possibilities for nicknames ([name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sofie[/name_f] [name_f]Soph[/name_f] (sofe), [name_f]Fia[/name_f], Phia, Sia, [name_f]Pia[/name_f] (if you go with [name_f]SoPHia[/name_f] not [name_f]SoFia[/name_f])…) Also, if you really love [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] or [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] you could find other names that mean the same thing.
Thanks for your help - I know [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is an incredibly popular name, but we just like it a lot. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is less common (esp in the UK) but I still don’t know.
I know upwards of twenty [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]'s, so I’m afraid the name is just too popular.
I’m crushing on [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] recently, though.
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] may be more popular, but it’s also much more timeless and elegant than [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] or [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], which already sound dated. Like emkglo mentioned, it’s also pretty versatile, nickname wise, which helps.
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is a nice name. Like others I wouldn’t personally use it due to popularity. BUT if it’s a name you love then I say use it. I think you just have to determine if you care about the popularity issue, it sounds like it might not be a big deal to you. Ultimately you don’t want to feel like you “settled” for [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] if you really wanted to name her [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is gorgeous and sophisticated. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is more fun and spunky. I favor [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but both are lovely.
I vastly prefer [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] seems so trite at this point. I assume it’s pretty high up on the UK charts. It’s #1 over here. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is so much more exotic and bubbly to me.
I have two friends that used this name [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] and also two cousins with a [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. It is a lovely name but is very common. If that doesn’t bother you than go for it. I know one [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], very cute and much less common. [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] sounds dated.
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is very popular, but it’s popular for a good reason: it’s a beautiful, classic name. I’m not a big fan of [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] or [name_f]Samantha[/name_f]. So I definitely prefer [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Good luck!
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is very similar to [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] which I think is pretty popular in the UK. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] sounds lovely and nns could be [name_f]Soph[/name_f], Phia, Phi, [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and nns for [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] could be [name_f]Bri[/name_f] or [name_f]Brina[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] but I could be a bit biased since that is my best friends name. Some other S names are [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Sabina[/name_f], [name_u]Sailor[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Selena[/name_f], [name_u]Salem[/name_u], [name_f]Samara[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Selah[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_u]Shannon[/name_u] and [name_u]Stacy[/name_u]
I concur with most others - [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is way too popular for my tastes, but if it’s the one for you and popularity is not a huge concern, go for it. It’s a beautiful name. It’s just so, SO popular.
If popularity is of no concern to you, I would definitely use [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful name with a strong meaning (wisdom). It’s one of my personal favorites, and it’s so lovely I would definitely consider using it despite it’s popularity. You could always use a less common nickname a pp suggested some really good ones, and you could always pair it with a unique/uncommon/special-meaning middle name. (I know a different middle wouldn’t change a situation of multiple [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]/Sophies in a classroom, but it would still help your daughter feel like she has a unique part to her name that differentiates her from the many other Sophias out there.)
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is nice but I personally love [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sofie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I feel they suit a grown woman better. I have only known one [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (I have lived in four different states). [name_m]Even[/name_m] so, a name becomes popular for a reason, because it is well liked. Your daughter could prefer a well known name or she could prefer a unique name. You need to choose the name you like best, not choose by how popular or unpopular it is.
Well, coming from a [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] herself…
I personally adore my name - like others have said, it has a great meaning, and generally I just love the sound. I have only ever known one [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], and it was never an issue for me. Honestly, if you love the name, use it!
I like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] a lot! [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]'s much less common, but I like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] much more. Plus, [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Soph[/name_f], [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], [name_f]Fia[/name_f], and Fi/[name_u]Fee[/name_u] are all adorable.
