Not pregnant, but starting TTC this month for baby #2; a sibling for [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]
My husband has declared his love for the name [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] ([name_f]Frederika[/name_f] honors his dad, [name_m]Fred[/name_m]). He literally said he thinks it’s “the coolest name for a girl” he’s ever heard. I know it will not be everyone’s style, but any time he falls for a name it makes me like it even more. So I just wanted to get some opinions on it. My favorite is still [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] ([name_f]Marie[/name_f] honors my mom - I’d like to honor my side of the family since [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] both honor DH’s).
I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] but [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is a bit “out there” for me. And, it seems like time for your family to be honored in a name. I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] but some don’t like alliterative names…good luck!
I think [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is fantastic. It’s a great choice. I wonder if you could still consider [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] as inspired by [name_f]Marie[/name_f]? Both start the same and have the same syllables and the second syllable is stressed.
In any case, I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] better than [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], simply for vintage chic and quirkiness.
Maral would be even closer to [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and Maral [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is swell.
In the end though, I like both your top choice and his. Both are usable, sweet and simple. Both are easy to say and spell and have an honoring name embedded. Tough choice, but I do like your husband’s suggestion a lot. Plus, it fits the style of [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] a bit better than [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is a bit harsh for my taste, and I have never liked [name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], etc, plus a bad association with a [name_m]Fred[/name_m] doesn’t help. Since it is an honor name and he loves it, I don’t see a problem with it. That is just my taste.
Some more ideas for [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]'s middle instead of [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]:
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederique[/name_f]/Fredrique, actually sounds prettier to me than [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederica[/name_f] (c looks better than the k for some reason)
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f] (fernanda is spanish version of frederica I believe, could be wrong)
I do think [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is the more interesting combination, but I prefer [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] over [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], and it does seem more fair that you get to honor your side of the family this time. If you do like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], though, maybe try looking in your family for a name that’s more in the style of [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]? Like if you have a Grandpa [name_m]George[/name_m], then you could do [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Georgianna[/name_f]. Or, looking at your signature, maybe [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] or [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] if those names are family names. (I would suggest looking for another form of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Marie[/name_f], but that seems like it would be a bit much paired with [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].)
Oh wow [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Fredericka[/name_f] is gorgeous and it sounds so lovely with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m]! Would you (and he) consider [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Fredericka[/name_f]? Or perhaps even [name_f]Fredericka[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]?
I agree that [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] would be a lovely combo. I assume that your last name is a longer Germanic name (like mine) and I think the flow would be lovely.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is a vibrant spunky choice and I can see the appeal especially as DH loves it so much. However I do prefer [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. I absolutely love the name [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] it’s elegant and pretty I also love the nickname [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] which adds vibrancy and spunk. [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is really pretty as well and sounds delicate with [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]. Have you thought of maybe [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] to honour [name_m]Fred[/name_m]? I know a girl [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] (she is [name_f]Frederica[/name_f] but goes solely by [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]) and it’s really fresh.
What about [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]? [name_f]Honor[/name_f] two member of family at the same time.
Or another variant of [name_f]Marie[/name_f]:
[name_f]Maren[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]
[name_f]Mari[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and the possible nns [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lu[/name_f] or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] are too cute. [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is not my style.
I’m not the hugest [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] fan–at all honestly; it’s not my cup of tea, and even after four or so years of Nameberry, it still hasn’t grown on me one bit–but [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] is a nice combo, and it’s cute he’s so excited about it. [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is nice, but I prefer [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] by a mile. I think something like [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] would be gorgeous, and I just love [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] in general.
[name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]! [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is a really beautiful name. I guess [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] just isn’t my style at all! I think its neat that he’s giving opinions though but you should get to honor your side too. What about [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]?
Thanks, @natalie6! I do agree it’s about time for my family to be honored. I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] but I think I would still lean towards [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], which actually has family meaning (though not exactly an honor name - it was the street I grew up on)
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] would also sound amazing (and can I just say that I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f], I have it on my shortlist ready to be combo-ed up at some point) and it would give your family a much-deserved honour, by the sound of it. What a well-named street (and possible daughter)! Otherwise, [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is pretty perfect - basically I’m keen to shove [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] in wherever possible, so ignore my slight bias…
Thanks so much for your suggestions! It’s a tradition to have [name_f]Marie[/name_f] in the middle name spot (all of my aunts and several girl cousins and my mom have that - so it’s not really honoring my mom but I know that it would mean the most to her and I think she’d be upset if I didn’t do that). So, I’d have to keep it in the middle, and I don’t think my mom would “get it” if it was just a form of [name_f]Marie[/name_f]/[name_f]Mary[/name_f].
I’ve never been one to like the option of two middle names, but I may have to consider it. These are all lovely suggestions! I know DH would be on board because he actually has brought up [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] before (and says he would call a little girl [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] as a pet name which I think is adorable).
@ashleyjuliette, I’ll run these past DH - I actually [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Fern[/name_f] (have ever since [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m]) but I don’t think DH would go for it. He’s pretty set on [name_f]Frederika[/name_f].
You all are so helpful (as always!). I love hearing opinions and suggestions! All in all, I think [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] (for family meaning and because I think I just prefer the names more) is still my favorite but I may be leaning towards adding [name_f]Frederika[/name_f] in there as another middle name. That opens up another world of possibilities! If we have a girl (fingers crossed!) I’d also consider throwing Edelweiss (my ultimate guilty pleasure name) in there as another potential second middle. We’ll see!
PS - Sorry if I missed anyone, I tried to address everyone who answered!
