Last night as I tossed and turned trying to sleep, the word Giverny popped into my mind and I thought what an exquisite name. It doesn’t look like much on paper, but pronounced the [name_m]French[/name_m] way, since it is [name_m]French[/name_m], it is beautiful.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know anyone named that? I wish I did!
C’mon folks, what do you think of Giverny as a name and have you ever known anyone named it? To me, it is far lovelier than [name_f]Monet[/name_f] which ends us sounding in the US alarmingly like money.
I think it’s lovely! A very interesting place name for sure. I agree that the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation is much more beautiful than what you’re likely to get in English (probably something like jiv-er-nee), which is unfortunate because I don’t think you could ever really get the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation to stick in the US (although if you’re in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], that’s probably not true). I wouldn’t use it myself for that reason, but I’d love to meet a little Giverny.
The [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation is lovely, and I can see it working as a name with that pronunciation. I really like, too, the connection with [name_f]Monet[/name_f] and his fantastic water lily paintings.
However, I find the appearance of Giverny to be rather ugly, and that ultimately seems to trump the nice sound of it for me. It also made me think to the words ‘govern’ & ‘gurney’, which aren’t good associations to have. On top of that, I’m really not overly keen on the ‘vern’ sound in names (however, I do love [name_f]Fern[/name_f]…shrugs, go figure).
Overall, while I do understand the appeal, I’m not a fan of it as a given name.
I know what you mean about how it looks on paper. I think the gardens there are so beautiful and [name_f]Monet[/name_f]'s paintings of them so beautiful, that I could overlook its looks. When I listened online to how to pronounce it though, I was mesmerized. Of course to have it butchered would be rough for the child. Maybe a cat of mine some day!
I think it would make a beautiful name… if you could guarantee that it would be pronounced and spelt correctly.
On a similar note, [name_m]Hubert[/name_m] de Givenchy recently died and so I’ve been hearing lots of [name_m]French[/name_m] speakers saying his name. It’s not usable as a baby name, but what a beautiful sound!
My knowledge of [name_m]French[/name_m] is not enough for me to know how to pronounce it properly, and in English I think its awful, sorry. It doesn’t look very good either.
