❗ Newest Topics and My Posts

Good news!

Lots of you have been asking how to view the newest created posts and also the topics you’ve posted in before.

I have found a solution! :raised_hands:

If you go to the homepage now, you will see that the tabs along the top have been added to and reordered:

(Note: on mobile this is a dropdown menu)

You can now choose to view the newest topics (the counter shows how many new topics there are since your last visit) and all of your own posts, in chronological order.

New topics are those created in the last 2 days that you have not opened yet.

I’m still working out how to tell at a glance which topics in a list are ones you’ve posted in before…

Honestly, I’m really not liking the new forum update. It’s too confusing (I don’t even know exactly what I’m replying to) and it honestly has ruined my Nameberry experience. Unfortunately, unless we have an option to change the layout to the original form, I don’t think I will be using my account on here anymore.

Is there a way to subscribe to threads or view my old subscriptions?

On the right side of topics you can choose the little bell icon under the slider (see image)

From there, you can choose to watch, track, or mute a topic/thread.

I hope this helps! I’m not sure about old subscriptions, unfortunately.

@EagleEyes

Perfect explanation, thank you!

@skatercat

I don’t think old subscriptions have been brought over, I’m afraid.

You can also bookmark posts (and set reminders for them), by clicking the three dots then the bookmark icon at the bottom:

I hope that isn’t true and you get used to the new format! We believe that this will be an all-around better experience for everyone and we would dearly like you to be part of it.

I cant say i’ll stay on the site much longer after visiting for over 5 years

I have to agree with them sadly…I’ve been a member since 2014 but the new layout may have ruined the site for me. I found no issues with the old format, and the way is now just seems so…impersonal. It feels like I’m on a google doc for a school project. Getting signatures back will help some but there are a lot of features I miss. We can no longer see how long people have been members, which is a feature I always loved to see! I haven’t been on here for a few weeks and I’m honestly devastated by this as I’ve been a very active member for years.

I’m the guy who imported the data from the old forum into this one (@pam feel free to edit or delete this if it’s out of place. . . I just couldln’t help myself :wink:). I do nothing but help people use Discourse (this software) for my living, and a big piece is helping people transition from other forum packages, so my opinions about Discourse vs every other forum on the planet are obviously very biased, so I’ll try not to offer those, but just give a few pointers.

Just click their avatar! And now you can see how long they’ve spent reading. The reasoning is that while this information is very helpful, it’s not something that you need to see every. single. time. that. user. you. know. all. about. posts. again. and. again. And have a multi-line signature for a show post, just clutters the screen with a bunch of stuff you don’t need to see, especially if that person has replied 6 times in the topic. So, if you wonder just who “@pfaffman” is, click my avatar (or even my username in this sentence) and you’ll see. If you don’t care, you don’t have to see a bunch of stuff about me that you don’t about.

Click it again and you can get even more info:

We didn’t bring over subscriptions, but if you visit a category you have control over how much of it you’ll see and subscribe (or mute!) so that you’ll get notifications about posts there.

There is a similar thing for topics (The Discourse people call them “topics” rather than “threads” for . . . reasons). Discourse tries to guess if you are interested in something (like if you reply or :heart: something), but you can fix it’s wrong guesses by clicking this at the bottom of each topic:

which gives you this.

You can even navigate to other topics while you’re writing a reply and quote from all over the forum and just paste in a picture that you copied or even just drag one in. And . . . and . . . . and!!!

Thank you for that! It was super helpful. Do you know how I can see older posts? Like in order of when they were posted? I only see how to find the most recent 20 or so, but I don’t see any way to scroll back farther than that in a category.

Do you mean “how can you see older topics in a category?” If you click a category they are displayed by latest post, which isn’t quite what you’re looking for, but in this view, you can just keep hitting space or scrolling down however you want and see lots of topics.

To get what you’re looking for you’ll need to be a “power user”. :wink: If you do a search (click that :mag: at the top) and search for something, you can then choose a “sort by”

There is still some database tuning going on, so searches aren’t working quite as well as everyone would hope and expect (sometimes they fail!), but I think that’ll be resolved before much longer. So you can search by “latest topic” can get things in reverse cron as I think you want (try this). It’ll show only the first 50, so if you want something else you’ll need to be a bit more clever in your search!

I mean later back than the top 50. We used to be able to click one button and go back a year in the posts. I’ve been working on a project since August that I talked about with Katinka where I’ve been making a collective list of all birth announcement names and the names listed of siblings, and counting how many times each individual name has been used on an actual berry baby-I know as a name nerd this is the kind of data people like to see. I just did probably 50+ hours of that to not be able to finish the project. I was back to the 2012 posts in the birth announcement forum, but I have no way of picking up from there and continuing. I used to be able to jump to the page (I was on page 261) and pick up each time I worked on it. How can I do this or where can I find this information?

@Kipperbo1

Some users are experiencing issues with the rolling topic feeds within categories. For some reason, the feeds aren’t auto-loading when these users scroll to the bottom of that first list.

For most users, including me, this is not a problem, but we are looking into it as a priority (@pfaffman any input welcome!)

I am sure we will get this fixed.

Also, we can’t see what we’ve already replied to! I completely agree with everything you’ve said! I’m trying to forget about the new format and just go ahead as usual, but it’s not the same! I’ve also been a member since 2014 and had no issues with the old format. [name_f]My[/name_f] take on it is as the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
(Also, I have to reload this webpage multiple times in order to reply to things…)

If you mean posts within a topic and not topics within a category, then you can grab that slider and drag it wherever you want:

Also, the URL ends with the topic_id and the post_number; you can just put whatever post number you want at the end. This will take you to a specific post, not just a page where you can go looking for the post.

You can also use the search to search posts within a single topic.

No, I mean within the category. For example, the birth announcements category.

Aha! Since you’re interested in searching by date, you might want to . . . search by date:

That seems much less cumbersome than scrolling infinitely.

Also, the search is embedded in the URL, so you could generate a bunch of those URLs offline and connect them with your notes.

Yours sounds like an interesting project that has complications I’d not considered. I hope that some of this helps.
