Our daughter’s name is [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Some will say [name_f]Martha[/name_f] doesn’t need a nickname as it only has 2 syllables but I am a nickname nerd and I just love giving my kids cute nicknames. Currently I am trying to decide what nickname I want to give her. For reference, I don’t want her nickname to be based on solely her middle name (Elle, [name_f]Nell[/name_f] etc…is not an option). I want to incorporate [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. The obvious ones would be [name_f]Marty[/name_f] or [name_m]Matty[/name_m]. I don’t like [name_f]Patsy[/name_f]. I read [name_f]Molly[/name_f] can also be a diminutive of [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. I mainly have heard that for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] though. [name_f]Mae[/name_f] would also be an option but I feel like I prefer two syllables. What do you think about [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]? Is it too far of a stretch? Also using her initial I’m thinking of calling her M.E. as in [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. Last but not least I also read [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] as an option for [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. Of the following which do you prefer and do you think could be used for a [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]?
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] I like as names, but for me (in the UK) I know them as standalone names so it seems a little strange to go for those if you wanted [name_f]Martha[/name_f] if that makes sense.
[name_f][/name_f]
I do like [name_f]Martha[/name_f] ‘Emmy’ even if it’s unusual…ME could also get you [name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
I love [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] as a name but it does feel stretchy for [name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
other suggestions [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Mari[/name_f]
I will say Mae is probably my favorite, but I love a one syllable name!
Marty and Marty both work very directly, but they aren’t my personal favorites. If you’re looking for a very obvious nickname, though, they’re the way to go!
I think you could easily get away with Maisie, and it’s so sweet. While Molly doesn’t come from Martha, it familiar enough on its own that it could work, though there’s also Mel / Mellie from M. El.
Emmy is also sweet and makes sense! In that vein, you may also like Mimi.
If you like Hattie, I would probably stick with Mattie. I think the connection is easily lost and Martha and Hattie could absolutely be sisters vs. the same person, though I love Hattie as a name!
I knew a [name_f]Marina[/name_f] growing up who went by [name_f]Mari[/name_f] (MAR-ee) I feel like that works perfectly for [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. [name_m]Mel[/name_m] works too, from her first and middle
Assorted thoughts: I’d probably go Marty/ Martie or Marnie (with the N from Eleanor), or maybe something very posh and fun like Moppy which means Martha would also get used. Mimi wound be cute - the Me-me version.
I like Emmy and Hattie too but possibly too far from Martha - I’d want to keep an M name, I think. Hattie is very cute though! Polly is another option in that vein (and I prefer Polly to Molly).
I’m not a massive Mae fan myself but the MaE spelling definitely works. Matty is a little too 80s boyish for me…
Of these, [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] are my favorites, though [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] feels like quite a stretch for me. [name_f][/name_f] I think [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is a lovely option, too, though!
[name_f][/name_f]
Here’s a few others I think would be lovely for a little [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]:
I second the suggestion of [name_f]Marnie[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Marty[/name_f] or [name_f]Mari[/name_f] is the most natural of the nicknames. Id also like to throw in [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] as a suggestion.
[name_m]Matty[/name_m] is my favorite from your options, though I think [name_f]Marty[/name_f] is most intuitive.
[name_f][/name_f]
I would probably go with [name_f]Marnee[/name_f], taking the N and the two Es from [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. [name_f]Or[/name_f] [name_f]Marlee[/name_f]! I like that better. [name_f]Or[/name_f] MARLO! I CHOOSE MARLO!
[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorite two for [name_f]Martha[/name_f] have always been [name_f]Martie[/name_f] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f]! Perhaps you could also get [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Melly[/name_f] from combining the sounds of [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]?
[name_f][/name_f]
From your options, my favorite would probably be [name_f]Marty[/name_f]. [name_f]Martha[/name_f] “Molly” is quite sweet too. I would imagine that [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] would work, but only in conjunction with also calling her [name_f]Mae[/name_f] from time to time. Like similar to nicknaming a babe [name_f]Mim[/name_f] and then getting to Mimsy! [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] also makes sense. I think all of them work apart from [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], but I can also see that one being fine as an “in the house” nickname that only family calls her.
I by far prefer [name_f]Marty[/name_f]! Spelled [name_f]Marty[/name_f] or even [name_f]Martie[/name_f], I think it’s an intuitive and very sweet nickname, as a nickname nerd myself.
I think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is super creative! I also like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. [name_f]May[/name_f] I also suggest: [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f]?
