I adore [name_f]Sibylla[/name_f] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u], but I’m wondering if there are any alternatives that use [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a nickname? Except any other variation of [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f], and not [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f].
Somebody a while ago suggested that [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u] (with the logic that [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]=[name_f]Millie[/name_f]=[name_u]Billie[/name_u] just like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]=[name_f]Meggy[/name_f]=[name_f]Peggy[/name_f] if you see what I mean). I rarely like overstretched or non-traditional nicknames but could this work?
Thank you! I’d love some suggestions x
(I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u] on it’s own but in all honesty I could never use ‘just [name_u]Billie[/name_u]’. It’s gorgeous and super adorable and such a perfect name with a great history, but my style is way more elaborate)
I agree that [name_u]Billie[/name_u] could be a nn for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I’ve also heard [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], and I supposed many names with a B in it could have [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a nn I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is such an adorable nickname.
Oh, I’ve been thinking about ways to get [name_u]Billie[/name_u] just recently! I adore [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], but for some reason I can’t imagine ever using it. I did some research and found a few options:
Biljana or Bilyana (Cyrillic: Биљана, Билјана or Бил”на) is a South Slavic name meaning “herb.” It is a popular name in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia and Serbia. It may refer to:
Slavic name derived from: бела, б”ла (white, fair-haired) or билка, биле (simple, herb).
It’s not a traditional pick for “how to get to [name_u]Billie[/name_u]” but it’s a legit name and a relatively easy “how’d you get [name_u]Billie[/name_u] from…” so I think it works. I also just like it a lot.
Other options:
Bilha/Bilhah - Biblical girl’s name that’s little-used.
Belisent
[name_f]Baila[/name_f], Beila, [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] - A family name for me (under assorted spellings, it goes back a few centuries…) it isn’t really a [name_m]Bill[/name_m]- sound but [name_u]Billie[/name_u] doesn’t feel too stretched, and far more pleasant than [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]/[name_u]Bayley[/name_u].
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - Perkier than [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], maybe doesn’t need its own nickname, but it’s an option? Not very flowery or full though.
[name_f]Belinda[/name_f] - is [name_f]Belinda[/name_f] ready to come back? I can’t decide. It’s as familiar in English speaking countries as Biljana is foreign. Whether that’s good or bad I don’t know.
[name_f]Elizabelle[/name_f] - If [name_f]Beth[/name_f]/[name_f]Betty[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] are short for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], is [name_f]Elizabelle[/name_f] justification for [name_u]Billie[/name_u]? I suppose it COULD be, but should it be? I don’t know. [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is not really further away than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nicks like [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Bunny[/name_f], [name_f]Buffy[/name_f]? It could work but I’m not sure I like it.
[name_u]Billie[/name_u] for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] seems like it would get really annoying.
I like [name_u]Abilene[/name_u] nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u] I believe there was a silent film star named [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] who went by [name_u]Billie[/name_u]?
You should check out britishbabynames.com, they have a section about diminutives and there’s a few posts that [name_f]Elea[/name_f]'s done on how to get to certain nicknames - and if you can’t find anything there, you could always email her and ask, [name_f]Elea[/name_f]'s so wonderfully helpful at lists!
[name_f]My[/name_f] great aunt (in her 80s) is named [name_u]Billie[/name_u] but her real name is [name_f]Wilma[/name_f]. She went by [name_u]Billie[/name_u] her whole life though. It is really a cute nn. The funny thing is is her sister is named [name_f]Betty[/name_f], so they are like [name_f]Wilma[/name_f] and [name_f]Betty[/name_f] from the Flintstones You could use [name_f]Willa[/name_f] (beautiful and more modern) if [name_f]Wilma[/name_f] isn’t your style (it’s not mine).
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]/other variants spring to mind - Abila, Amabilis, [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_u]Abril[/name_u], Balthilde/Bathilde, Basileia, Beila, Ebrill/Ebrilla, Lilbet/Lilbeth, Lubomila, [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Abiela[/name_f], Abisola, [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f]/Bidilia, [name_f]Fabiola[/name_f] or [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] all might work, although some are stretching it a little. [name_f]Pilar[/name_f] nicknamed [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is sweet too, but [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] would be my first choice.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about any B name with [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as the middle?
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] - [name_u]Billie[/name_u]
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name for nickname [name_u]Billie[/name_u] is [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. Never really thought about that one until last season of Boardwalk Empire and the character [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] “[name_u]Billie[/name_u]” [name_m]Kent[/name_m].
