Given my previous thread on the potential issues with pronunciation of Hawthorne in the UK. Its clear that we need to be happy with a nickname to give people in case they can’t help but shorten the name. I’m not really a nickname person so they always feel kind of uncomfortable for me to use … A bit forced I guess.
So what nickname do you think feels most natural from the name Hawthorne?
Hawk
Thor
Thorn
Thorny
These are all terrible

If you don’t like these… Is there something else I haven’t even considered?
Thanks everyone for helping me through this naming crisis
I voted for [name_m]Thorn[/name_m], also a huge fan of the suggestions of [name_m]Thor[/name_m] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. What about [name_m]Hal[/name_m] or [name_u]Harry[/name_u]? Those might be a bit of a stretch though.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]!
i believe the original poster is from the US but lives here in the uk and her initial post was questioning whether hawthorne was usable in the uk because we pronounce the first syllable ‘haw’ exactly the same as the insult whore. whereas in the states the words sound fairly different :)) if that makes sense xx
anyway i personally think thorn would work best in the uk. hawk is cool too but maybe less intuitive x
Yes that’s exactly it. I feel like [name_m]Thorn[/name_m] or [name_m]Thorne[/name_m] is more intuitive too and I might actually use it. I feel like hawk is so cool but makes me think I need the middle name to start with k or I’m just like… Where did it come from?
i sometimes think on NB it’s easier to come up with nicknames because you see the name written down and can be more creative with the different letters so when you see [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_m]Hawk[/name_m] works but when you say [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] out-loud it seems like a more tenuous connection if that makes any sense. But yeh i definitely think you could go with thorn(e) !! it sounds really cool.
