You will all be sick of me! I am back. Some of you may remember when I wanted to use the name [name]Flora[/name] after my Great Aunt…She went by [name]Florrie[/name]. Wondering if [name]Florrie[/name] would be too big a stretch for a nickname for [name]Fiona[/name] Lilidh. I know it’s a stretch…but is it usable?? I know technically you can do whatever you want but honestly, would you think it’s weird?
It’s too much of stretch. [name]Fiona[/name] is significantly different than [name]Florrie[/name], and I prefer [name]Fiona[/name] on it’s own.
For me it’s not natural. Nicknames are shortned names or sounds of a longer version. The most natural shortening of [name]Fiona[/name] would be Fi, or even [name]Fio[/name], but not [name]Florrie[/name]. [name]Florrie[/name] works, and is most commen as, the nickname for [name]Florence[/name], which if you have more children is still usable as I don’t find it would be too close to [name]Fiona[/name] to render it unusable.
I think it is no moer of a stretch than getting [name]Mila[/name] from [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Laura[/name]. I like it. Most importantly, I think you need to find peace with the your babies name and if the nn [name]Florrie[/name] helps that process, I think it is good.
I love it! Go for it!
I’m of the school of thought that nicknames don’t really have to make sense.
A lot of people will know her as the nickname, and when it comes to light her nickname is [name]Fiona[/name], there doesn’t have to be an organic reason. She could say a family member went by [name]Florrie[/name] and my initials are FL.
I agree with this also. I know it’s been a challenge for you to connect with Fiona Lilidh, so if Florrie as a nickname helps you connect to the name a little more, then I think it’s the best nickname.
Thanks! Still need to think about it some more but like to hear people’s first reactions to it. Helps to get the honest feedback.
I think it works fine. I like [name]Florrie[/name] a lot! I went through a phase where I loved [name]Flora[/name] and I thought [name]Florrie[/name] was adorable. It works
I adore the name [name]Florrie[/name]. My husband had said no to [name]Flora[/name]. I know I would never name a third daughter [name]Flora[/name] as it feels too close to [name]Fiona[/name]. [name]Just[/name] not sure if I could pull off [name]Florrie[/name] for nickname to [name]Fiona[/name]. I guess it just depends if it sticks or not.
I think it is lovely and super sweet. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t a natural nickname for [name]Fiona[/name] - it matters that it has meaning to you. Some people take the name-nickname relationship [name]WAY[/name] too literally. Go for it:)
Thanks for the encouragement. It’s worth a shot. Although I have to admit, since starting the nickname search…nothing feels natural to call her except [name]Fiona[/name]? So maybe it’s a sign that [name]Fiona[/name] is her right name after all. I will attempt [name]Florrie[/name] though. I love the nickname. [name]Even[/name] if it was only a pet name around the house. We’ll see.
I fully think you should try it. My nickname as a kid was [name]Coco[/name] and it couldn’t be farther from my real name. But, it stuck and I answered to it.
Nicknames in no way need to be organically derived from the given name. You can call her Buttons, [name]Scout[/name], [name]Ginger[/name], [name]Lovey[/name], etc.
Honestly, it does work. [name]Florrie[/name] from [name]Fiona[/name] lilIDH has the same starting and ending sounds, and since Lilidh is a flower, why not [name]Florrie[/name]?
Thanks [name]Blade[/name]! You always make such great sense to me. Appreciate it!
