Decided on the name Katharine for our daughter, and want her to go by a nickname. We are torn between Kate and Kaia. Any thoughts?
As a fellow [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] (my spelling) I like [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] - it is definitely a more unusual nn for it - this is actually the first I’ve heard of it being used as a nn for [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] but I think it does fit and it sounds really sweet. I also know literally over 10 Kate’s and while I think it is a great name as a fellow [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] it can definitely be a bit frustrating to always have to go by [name_f]Kate[/name_f] R, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] J etc to differentiate between everyone.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] is more intuitive & will stick better.
both are lovely! kaia doesn’t sound like a nickname so i wouldn’t expect for it to be short for katharine. kate is now becoming a solo name too but i would definitely understand it being a nickname. i think i like kate more just because it’s quick and classy and suits any age. i’ll list some other nicknames just in case there are some you didn’t notice (but i bet you went through them all haha)
katie
kat
kate
kiki
kitty
kit
kinny
kath
kathy
kari
kara
kay
hope this helps!
I like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] better but my favorite is [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. Not sure how you get [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] from [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. Another idea is [name_f]Rin[/name_f].
How about Rinn?
Sweet, simple, to the point.
EDIT: Apologies, didn’t realize the OP asked for a decision. I greatly favor Kate or Kaia.
I really like [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Katharine[/name_f]. It’s unexpected as a nn, but certainly not out of the realm of possibility as it is a international variation of Katharine-based names.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] is super sweet! And it’s more intuitive imo
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f] isn’t intuitive, would probably need explaining. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] sounds simple yet sweet, makes more sense.
Ahhgg they’re both so lovely. I think as a nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is better than [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] (or Kaya) because its the easiest option but [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] does have a lovely spin on [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] and is a little more unusual. Both are lovely options though!!
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] are both such lovely yet different options. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is tried and true, strong, and an obvious choice for [name_f]Katharine[/name_f]. [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] is spunky and off beat but not too cutesy; an unconventional choice for [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] but still makes sense. [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] (Kya) was used as a nickname for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] in the popular book “Where the Crawdads Sing” so it may be a bit more familiar to some people than you may think. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch at all.
But to answer your question I think this may be a good “wait til you meet her and see what fits best” scenario. I really don’t think you can go wrong. I think it comes down to if you think a more traditional name fits her better vs something a bit more off beat.
Both are lovely but I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] will stick more easily
I prefer [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] in general, but I don’t really think of it as a nickname. I also love [name_f]Kate[/name_f], and I feel like it works better as a nickname
