Nickname for Serafina

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys

so we will be calling our girl [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] and I was going to call her [name_f]Fina[/name_f] for short (but mainly just [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]) but now my hubby has said he will call her [name_f]Sera[/name_f] for short. I hate [name_f]Sera[/name_f] as it sounds like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. Wouldn’t the little girl get confused if she has two nicknames? [name_m]How[/name_m] likely is it that everyone will call her [name_f]Sera[/name_f] if he starts calling her that? I dont mind it on occasion but I really prefer [name_f]Fina[/name_f]! how do I convert him lol? his favorite girls name is [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] is a compromise!

Anyone here with a daughter [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]/phina? does she get nicknamed a lot or do most people call her by her real name?

One of my best friends is a [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (even longer than [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]) and surprisingly everyone calls her by that name, not a nickname. I guess thats what Id prefer for my [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] too.

What about [name_f]Sena[/name_f] as nickname? I don’t think you can force [name_f]Fina[/name_f] as nickname behind your husband back.

I don’t think it’s a problem for you to call her [name_f]Fina[/name_f] and your husband to call her [name_f]Sera[/name_f]. My kids get called a variety of nicknames and it’s no big deal. [name_f]Cate[/name_f] is only four months old, so she’s a little too young to really know her name yet, but [name_m]Liam[/name_m] (who is almost nineteen months) responds to [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Will[/name_m], [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u], etc. I do think it is important to accept that when she’s older, though, she’ll have her own opinion about what she’ll want to be called, so if you absolutely can’t stand the thought of her ever going by [name_f]Sera[/name_f], then maybe it would be better to use [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] in the middle.

(About going by the full name, I think it’s absolutely possible. Only family and very close friends use nicknames for our kids. Everybody else, we introduce them as [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], and that tends to be what they get called.)

I have [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] on my short list and assuming I actually have a daughter with this name someday, I’m going to call her with her full name, [name_f]Sera[/name_f], [name_u]Fee[/name_u], [name_f]Fina[/name_f] and… [name_u]Seren[/name_u]. I don’t think it’s a big deal. I go by different nicknames myself and I never have any problem with that. She’ll decide what she likes when she’s older, but until that you and your husband can definitely call her both [name_f]Sera[/name_f] and [name_f]Fina[/name_f].

Sephy? [name_f]Ephie[/name_f]?

Aerie? [name_u]Finn[/name_u]? [name_f]Siri[/name_f]?

Thanks guys! I feel a lot better reading your replies. He first said “we’ll call her [name_f]Fina[/name_f]” then just all of a sudden he decided she was going to be called [name_f]Sera[/name_f]. Anyhow, I liked the suggestion of calling her [name_f]Sena[/name_f]! thats a bit different! and I dont really mind [name_f]Sera[/name_f] in itself, it looks pretty but when he says it, it sounds exactly like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f].

You are right in that it is mostly family who give nicknames! now when I think about it, I was called [name_f]Fia[/name_f] all my childhood (my family still call me that) but that was only when I was quite small and by the time I was 10ish everyone called me by my full name [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]. No one calls me [name_f]Fia[/name_f] now (apart from my family). So it is not a big deal really I think I am just stressing about everything even small ATM.

Our youngest is [name_f]Hope[/name_f]. My husband loves the Nn Opie and is mainly the only one who calls her that. Mostly everyone just calls her [name_f]Hope[/name_f] or [name_u]Poe[/name_u] which was how our daughter [name_f]Anna[/name_f] said [name_f]Hope[/name_f] at first. I don’t think it’s confusing at all.

[name_f]Serafina[/name_f] has so many different nn options it’d be a shame to use just one. If [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] was a compromise for [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] I’d let him use [name_f]Sera[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Fina[/name_f] myself. After all, she will be both of yours daughter.

I like the suggestion of [name_u]Seren[/name_u]. It stays true to the first syllable of the name but isn’t as common as [name_f]Sera[/name_f]/[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. I’m not a big fan of [name_f]Fina[/name_f] personally, but I think [name_u]Seren[/name_u] is lovely.

I am totally with you! While I love [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], I don’t like the [name_f]Sera[/name_f] spelling, and so I like [name_f]Fina[/name_f] much better than [name_f]Sera[/name_f]. I think just [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] is pretty great, too, and I think Sephie’s adorable.

Good luck!

Thanks guys!!! Im way more relaxed about this now. I can think of many nn’s I like actually… [name_f]Fina[/name_f], [name_m]Feeny[/name_m], Seri, [name_f]Sena[/name_f], … and Shannagrace you are right in that I should let him call her what he wants. I haven’t actually told him he cant! I just moaned about it a little ha ha:) We had a very difficult time coming up with names so I am quite happy we both love [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] and neither of us feel they lost out! I had to give up names I love and so did he ([name_f]Sarah[/name_f] for example) but this name is one we both love and agree on!
