We’re expecting a boy in Sept. My favorite name by far is [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. My husband likes the name but HATES the nickname [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. I don’t like it either, but am content to just enforce “[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]” around family and friends. Once he is in school I guess it’s out of my control.
My husband keeps coming up with other name options but nothing else feels right.
[name_u]Gale[/name_u] and [name_u]Gabi[/name_u] are the only ones I can come up with. You could use his initials as his nickname - if his middle name begins with O, what about [name_m]Geo[/name_m], etc? Xx
There’s [name_f]Brie[/name_f], or [name_u]Elie[/name_u]. If he’s already using a nickname, people are probably less likely to start using another one, but you’re right, once he goes to school it’s up to him what nickname he uses and how much he enforces it.
That is a tough one! We had the same problem when naming our son. We loved Allister but both of us disliked the nn [name_m]Al[/name_m]. We ended up using it and just knowing that we can’t control what friends at school will call him. Right now if anyone calls him [name_m]Al[/name_m], we let them know we prefer [name_u]Ali[/name_u] or Allister.
I def think you could just use [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] all the time with no nn. [name_m]Just[/name_m] let people know you prefer [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. Although from my experience, most people do like to shorten names. Some nn that might work for [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] are G, [name_m]Abe[/name_m], [name_m]Eli[/name_m], Gabs, [name_m]Gab[/name_m], [name_m]Gil[/name_m], [name_m]Gib[/name_m], Gav, [name_m]Biel[/name_m]
There is a [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] in my neighborhood, across the street. He is in elementary school. A large group of kids are always playing at his house and they never call him [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. Coincidentally, and perhaps this is a trend, there are some other boys that he plays with and they all go by their full names, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and his brother [name_m]William[/name_m]. I never hear nicknames, perhaps that is because the parents set the tone. I love the options of [name_m]Abe[/name_m] and [name_m]Eli[/name_m].
