Nickname Lucky. A great nickname or a dog's name?

So we’re considering using Luciano as a middle name for our son. I told my husband that if that’s his middle name his nickname could be “Lucky.” You know, Lucky Luciano. He said Lucky sounds like a dog’s name. I just think it’s stinkin’ cute. What do you think?

By the way, just a shout out to Blade, thanks for the suggestion!!

Now somebody on another site posted this comment, which I think is hysterical:

"Sorry but I think you’re husband’s correct on this one. Lucky sounds like (pick one of the following examples)…

1 A dog’s name
2 A Danielle Steele character
3 A Don Juan
4 A soap opera hunk"

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a Danielle Steele character, a Don Juan or a soap opera hunk! To me that all makes it a great name!”

What do you guys think? Still not sure if the first name is going to be Milo, Simon, Wyatt, Dean, Blake, Max or something else, but all I know is I love Lucky!

Well… following the soap opera thing… if you watch [name]General[/name] Hospital, [name]Luke[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]'s (major, central character) son is named [name]Lucas[/name] [name]Lorenzo[/name] and they call him [name]Lucky[/name]. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Sometimes nn just happen…

Well, I personally love it. I think that’s the fun of a nickname, it can be something you wouldn’t normally use. I was known as Mouse and Magpie. I’m sure if my parents had gone on here when I was born and asked “so we’re thinking of calling her Mouse and Magpie, what do you think?” people would have said “omg animal names!” I went by [name]Ed[/name] from late childhood until high school graduation by not only teachers, but friends. Yes, a boys name. I no longer go by [name]Ed[/name], Mouse or Magpie in general, I go by my given name: [name]Erica[/name]. That’s the beauty of a nn, when the child grows up, they have a name waiting for them! And it tickles my fancy when I go home and family and childhood friends call me by my other names.

So. Those are my thoughts on nicknames in general.

I think [name]Lucky[/name] is a great nn!!

In my opinion, I dont think it would age well and is a fairly commen dog name. However,I do have one neighbor who calls me lucky because when I was little,I went on a walk with her and found a heads-up penny so hence the nickname “[name]Lucky[/name]” I think it is really cute as a nickname but I wouldnt want to be named [name]Lucky[/name].

I named a character in my novel [name]Lucky[/name]. His full name is [name]Vito[/name] [name]Mallory[/name] and the story is all about how and why everything always ends up working out for him, hence the nickname.

I really like it as a name, purely because I spent 90,000 words writing about [name]Lucky[/name] and he was a great character to write. I do make a comment in the first chapter about how much he dislikes it though:

“[name]Vito[/name] stopped. [name]Lucky[/name]; that was his nickname. He didn’t really like it, little animals were called [name]Lucky[/name], not people, but that hadn’t prevented it from spreading like wildfire and he was powerless to do anything about it. His colleagues had latched onto the idea and refused to let go like a small puppy with a favourite slipper; a puppy called [name]Lucky[/name].”

I think it works fine as a nickname.

I have been craving a person named [name]Lucky[/name] for I don’t know how long! I love it!!!

There was a real life gangster in the 1920s named [name]Lucky[/name] [name]Luciano[/name]. He’s a character in the historical fiction HBO show Boardwalk Empire. [name]Luciano[/name] was his last name in real life, his first name was [name]Charles[/name]. Lucky Luciano - Wikipedia

I think it’s a cool name with a great nn. The name [name]Lucius[/name] was high on the list for our first son and a friend told us one plus was we could call him [name]Lucky[/name] and I was really excited about that.

I think I’m getting my husband on my side. He’s having fun saying [name]Lucky[/name] [name]Luciano[/name]. Yay! And I think [name]Jesse[/name] & [name]Lucky[/name] work great together! Now I just have to narrow down the perfect first name… I’ll get there in time.

I agree with you (obviously ;)). You’re not NAMING him [name]Lucky[/name], you’re calling him [name]Lucky[/name]. Big difference.

Btw I really wanted my son’s middle name to be [name]Lucian[/name], after [name]Lucian[/name] of Antioch, and nickname him [name]Lucky[/name]. [name]Raphael[/name] won out, but I’m keeping it in my pocket just in case I get another naming opportunity.

[name]Blade[/name], love, love love [name]Raphael[/name]!

[name]Do[/name] you really think [name]Jesse[/name] & [name]Oscar[/name] are horrible together? This is my last and final baby and out of all my names I think I’ll be heart broken if I don’t use it. [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Luciano[/name] Altomari, what do you think?

[name]Oscar[/name] is kind of rascally, but I don’t know if it’s shed its grouch image or Grumpy Old [name]Man[/name] persona.

[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Luciano[/name] Altomari is definitely a hip name-- the light [name]Luciano[/name] does wonders to freshen up [name]Oscar[/name], and the flow of the name is perfect. If you love [name]Oscar[/name], go for it. Personally I preferred [name]Simon[/name] or [name]Wyatt[/name].

My main problem with [name]Oscar[/name] is I’m afraid it’s too rhymey with my surname. [name]Do[/name] you agree? Does it sound ridiculous?

there are a few sounds shared, but it definitely doesn’t rhyme or sound ridiculous!

It probably wouldn’t age well, but it’s not horrible. [name]Trust[/name] me, there are far worse nicknames than [name]Lucky[/name]…

I love [name]Lucky[/name]. It’s only a nn, it’s not like you’re putting it on the birth certificate

And for people saying it won’t age well, neither does many of the cutesy nn’s we give kids. Their just pet names, they don’t have to age.

I know this post is a couple of months old, so I don’t know if the OP will even see this. [name]Just[/name] wanted to weigh in by saying from personal experience that [name]Lucky[/name] is not a bad NN at all. My last name is Luckey, thus I was often called Luckey (I played a lot of sports in HS too, which made this even a more common name). It was never a NN that was portrayed negatively or anything like that. I always thought it was a solid NN.

I want to give a [name]Felix[/name] or [name]Felicity[/name] the nn [name]Lucky[/name]! I love it as a nn.

My dog’s name is [name]Lucky[/name], so it does feel very much like a dog name to me. That being said, it would be your son’s nn, not his given name. If it was the full fn, I’d say no. But as a nn I think it could work.

What if he’s unlucky? It makes me think of the Freakonomics article about Winner and Loser.
