I’m looking for some creative nicknames for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and also any opinions on whether it is just TOO much name for a real person.
I think [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] is pushing it just a tad; simply because it’s also the name of a genre of music.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to be named [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], as it feels too conspicuous and unforgiving.
Also I’d have gotten years of “Oh, so your parents must have been big hippies back in the day, huh?”
However, as far as mythology names go, it’s way more accessible and easy to read than [name_f]Calliope[/name_f].
Nickname ideas: [name_f]Caly[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f]; [name_u]Lee[/name_u]; [name_f]Lili[/name_f]
Really like [name_f]Callie[/name_f], very sweet, but I know what you mean about it being conspicuous, it’s the boldness of the name which prevents me from adding it to my list!
Would love to hear more opinions
I think it’s too much.
I think it’s too much but if you love them go for it.[name_f]Callie[/name_f] is a sweet nickname I like
I actually know a [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], and she has no problems with her name - she wears it very well. I met her when I was really young, and so my first thought when meeting her was Calippo ice lollies. As far as I’m aware she doesn’t have a nickname, but I agree with others that [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is adorable and the obvious choice. Otherwise I think [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] could be sweet or Lipsy/Lippy as a more “fun” choice.
That’s hard. I don’t really like [name_f]Callie[/name_f] at all, but it seems like the only viable nn here.
I love [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], though. It’s so bold and fresh, and I think it would work fine without a nn. However, I cannot hear the name without thinking of Pirates of the Caribbean. Not a bad thing, but something to consider because I cannot be the only one and I don’t know if it would bother you or not.
I taught a sweet little girl from Greece with the name–it worked on her!
I don’t think [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] is too much.
However, I agree with a previous poster that I wouldn’t want to be called [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], as it could never feel like me as a rather gentle and traditional person. But while I might muse on how nice it would have been if my parents had named me [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], there are girls who would long for a bright and bold name such as [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] with which they will stand out from the crowd. There are names for every personality and you can only have intuition on what the tiny person you hold as a baby will feel like in the future, but I think the majority would grow into their name anyway, and only a few identity-conscious people would resent it if they don’t feel it fits them.
I don’t think a [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] would get teased, but adults will probably raise their eyebrows a bit when she’s little, which shouldn’t matter too much.
Nicknames for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] could be [name_f]Callie[/name_f], Callo, [name_f]Cappie[/name_f], Capso, Lyppie, [name_f]Lypsie[/name_f], Lypso, Lylie.
I like [name_f]Calla[/name_f] over [name_f]Callie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u].
What about [name_f]Sissie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sisi[/name_f]? I wouldn’t use [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] myself, but I think it’s beautiful and very usable. Makes me think of a nymph.
I love Greek mythology, so I think this name is a beautiful choice! Nicknames I think of include [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_u]Cali[/name_u], [name_u]Cal[/name_u], or So. So looks a little weird, but I find it cute. [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] on its own, without a nickname, also works well.

I think it’s an amazing name and have loved it since reading The Chamomile Lawn (although [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] is a bit of a brat!). I had it on my list for my baby but have moved to my ‘possible middles’ as I think if would be really challenging to wear and I’s spend a lot of time having to explain it.
I think in some upper middle class bohemian circles it would fit in but could be seen as pretenious and a lot of people would think immediately of the music rather than Greek connection (not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s a different feel).
A friend has a friend whose daughter (I think she’s about 10) is named [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. (Her brother is [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], which I think is a neat sibset.) It’s an unusual name to be sure, but [name_f]IMO[/name_f] it’s pretty cool. I like the idea of [name_f]Callie[/name_f]/[name_u]Cali[/name_u] as nns; [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] would be unique but it’s certainly not unheard of ([name_m]Kevin[/name_m] Bacon & [name_f]Kyra[/name_f] Sedgwick have a daughter named [name_f]Sosie[/name_f]). I say if you like it, go for it!
