Nicknames for Elizabeth?

I love the names [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name]. I was wondering if I should name my daughter [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call her one of the two nicknames or name her [name]Eliza[/name] or [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name]? What are your thoughts? Due [name]September[/name] 16th!! Thank you for your help Xx

If you plan on calling her just [name]Eliza[/name], then I would go for just [name]Eliza[/name]. It’s a full name in its own right, a legitimate variant just like [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Isabelle[/name], or [name]Elise[/name]. However, [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name] is just too nicknamey. Besides, if you want to call her both [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Bess[/name], then I would opt for [name]Elizabeth[/name] so you have that fuller connection to both nicknames. If you’re not sure which you like best, I would go for [name]Elizabeth[/name], too–that way, she could grow into whatever nn suits her best.

With I’d go with either [name]Eliza[/name]; or [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call her [name]Bess[/name].

I agree with [name]Ashley[/name] in that I prefer [name]Eliza[/name] as a stand alone name rather than as nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I think it’s the “i” change from short to long. [name]Bess[/name] can’t stand on it’s own though. I’m currently enchanted by the full name of [name]Elizabeth[/name] so I vote to go with that one and call her [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name].

I would go with [name]Elizabeth[/name] because you like both. From what you’ve described, I could see [name]Elizabeth[/name] as her full name, [name]Eliza[/name] as the nickname that most people use for her, and [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name] as a cute nickname that family members use.

I agree with pp; if you like both nns, [name]Elizabeth[/name] would be your best bet! I love [name]Elizabeth[/name]/[name]Elisabeth[/name].

You could also make your choice based on what sounds best with your last name and the middle name(s) you liked to use. So if you’d like to use a middle name that ends in “a” [name]Eliza[/name] would not be the best choice. Or if you have a long middle name or two middle names you’d like to use then perhaps [name]Eliza[/name] is the best pick for her first name. Similarly if you last name is quite long than [name]Eliza[/name] might work best.
