Nicknames for my main characters

So my main characters are named [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] Cotes and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_m]Miller[/name_m]. I’m trying to get nicknames for them and it’s harder than expected.
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is independent. He has dark brown almost black hair and brown eyes. He is smart, easily confused and confident. I have been considering the nicknames [name_m]Cole[/name_m] and [name_u]Nico[/name_u] (nick-oh) but I’m not sure.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is compassionate. She has brown hair and brown/gray eyes. She is kind, quiet, and helpful. I want her nickname to be really sweet and soft to match her personality.

I think [name_u]Nico[/name_u] suits [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] perfectly!

And for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], how about [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]?

I second [name_u]Nico[/name_u] and [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]! [name_m]Cole[/name_m] is also a good idea. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are hard since there’s not much beyond [name_u]Nick[/name_u]/[name_u]Nicky[/name_u], [name_m]Cole[/name_m], [name_u]Nico[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], and [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]. I also suggest [name_f]Etta[/name_f] for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but it’s a bit of a stretch.

I love [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]! It fits the character’s description perfectly! As for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], I like [name_m]Cole[/name_m]! [name_u]Nico[/name_u] is good too, but I think [name_m]Cole[/name_m] fits the character better.

[name_u]Nico[/name_u] is a great NN for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]! It does suit your character and it’s not common which is good. I’d also consider [name_u]Nic[/name_u], but not [name_u]Nick[/name_u]. [name_m]Cole[/name_m] is a creative NN for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] but I think [name_u]Nico[/name_u] or [name_u]Nic[/name_u] might suit him better.

I know a [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] in real life whose NN is Charchar (shar-shar). She’s a child, and this NN may be too childish for your character, but it may be just cute enough. [name_f]Char[/name_f] (shar) could work too, as could [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]. For this character I’m not feeling much of [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], but it’s another option.

I really like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_m]Cole[/name_m], although I do think it depends on the type of book you’re writing. Is it a modern-day, realistic sort of book? Because interesting nicknames (as much as I adore using them) can occasionally appear to be “trying too hard,” especially if both main characters have one. I’m definitely guilty of this myself, having named characters [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] “[name_f]Annie[/name_f],” [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] “[name_f]Mary[/name_f],” and [name_f]Juliett[/name_f] “[name_u]Jules[/name_u]” all in the same story. It can be hard to resist, but don’t forget that most people have pretty uninteresting names.

…That being said, J.K. Rowling named her characters things like “[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]” and “[name_m]Albus[/name_m],” and look how she turned out! It’s obviously up to you what you name your characters, especially if it fits the tone of your story for them to have nicknames that aren’t boring or obvious. [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] got away with the crazy names because of the whimsical, magical feel to the books. The Hunger Games got away with “[name_f]Katniss[/name_f]” and “Peeta” because it was set in the future, and who knows what people will be named in the future? Other books get away with it for other reasons, so as long as the names fit the story and the characters, you should be fine.

Anyway, I didn’t mean to ramble like that. I got kind of sidetracked. Back to [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]!

[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] is cute, but a bit “old,” though I can see it making a comeback. Is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] a bit of an “old soul”? Because that would be perfect! “[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]” conjures up a sweet image that could very well fit [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s description.
“[name_f]Tottie[/name_f]” (or [name_f]Totty[/name_f]) could also work, though it’s a bit kiddish.
I also really like “[name_f]Lotta[/name_f]”. Actually, [name_f]Lotta[/name_f] may be my favorite so far, even if it’s a bit of a stretch compared to the other nicknames. I think it’s sweet like “[name_f]Lottie[/name_f],” with an added softness that [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] may lack. But that could just be me. I think it’s more “adult” than the other nicknames, but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing for your character. Is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] childlike?

I like “[name_m]Cole[/name_m]” a lot. It’s both modern-sounding, and classy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] “Col” might work, though the spelling might throw people off. “[name_m]Colin[/name_m]” was once a diminutive of [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] via Col.
I like “[name_u]Nico[/name_u]” a lot as well, but I can’t make my brain pronounce it “[name_u]Nick[/name_u]-o” instead of “Nee-koh” when I read it. I’m not sure if others will have that problem or not. It might just be me.
A little different would be something like “Nicho” (pronounced just like “[name_u]Nick[/name_u]-o”), but that might confuse readers as well.
I like “[name_u]Nick[/name_u],” but I could also see why it might not appeal to you. It’s a bit “varsity basketball”-sounding? Whereas “[name_u]Nicky[/name_u],” as much as I adore it, could be seen as childish.
A german nickname is “[name_m]Klaus[/name_m],” but that works better with [name_m]Nicklaus[/name_m], Nikolaus, Niklaus, etc… I still like it, though.

Anyway, I hope this helps, despite my rambling! Good luck!

I love the idea of [name_u]Nico[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]! It’s not a common name among society or literary characters. [name_m]Cole[/name_m] is a great name, but I don’t think it would be the one for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. [name_u]Nick[/name_u]/[name_u]Nic[/name_u] would be alright, but it’s common and doesn’t stand out. [name_f]Nix[/name_f]/Nicks are possiblities of nicknames.

I like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Lotta[/name_f]? [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is cute and all, but it sounds more like a nickname for someone with [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]'s personality. In 'Pushing Daisies" a character is named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but goes by [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], which I find adorable.

Good luck with your story!

Hello!

I’m really curious; did you wind up deciding on any nicknames? [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I don’t know anything about your story, I’m really interested to see what sorts of names you decided on!
