Thank you! One of the reasons I love [name_f]Marina[/name_f] so much is because of the sea connection, so it’s nice to hear that [name_f]Nia[/name_f] has that connection too. I definitely love the ocean and all sea creatures. I also have Irish ancestry!
My last name is actually Irish in origin already, so that’s pretty cool. I’d be pretty happy with Marie, [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], or [name_f]Nia[/name_f], so it’ll probably just come down to what my family likes.
One potential problem is that my future Mother in law is [name_f]Lia[/name_f], and my brother’s recently acquired step daughter is already [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. I had forgotten about that, since I’ve only met her once so far. Hopefully it won’t be a problem since neither of them live close, and family will probably use a longer version of the name anyway.
I decided to involve my mom in the process and she is being very supportive and helpful!
She said she loves my name, but the most important thing is that I like it and that it feels like “me”
She was ok with [name_f]Marie[/name_f], but also liked some of the other suggestions.
Here’s what she had to say so far,
“[name_m]How[/name_m] fun asking for suggestions! They all sound nice. [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] would be unique as a more formal name and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (the Pooh) would be great for people close to you. [name_f]Nia[/name_f], I think could be used for both and I really like it. [name_f]Marina[/name_f] is one that has other associations that I think of first. Such as the town and where boats are launched. In the non Disney little mermaid cartoon was her name [name_f]Marina[/name_f]? In my mind I hear someone yelling “[name_f]Marina[/name_f]”. Are you having fun with this? I am.”
Omg how sweet is she?! ”
Update
Fiance really doesn’t care for Wynn or Winnie, and doesn’t like Nia either.
Do you think Nina would still work instead of Nia as a Whitney nickname? Fiance likes it better, but still prefers Mia above all else and Marie second.
It looks like Marie, nn Mia is the most acceptable so far, but I’d like to find the best Whitney nn and put it to a family vote. As supportive as my mom is being I think she’d honestly prefer to keep calling me Whitney. I’m definitely open to more nicknames based off of the “ney” part of my name and I’d like to hear thoughts on Nina too.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Thanks for your comment, it’s good to know people are interested. I was worried I was being annoying and obsessive, haha.
I think the topic is coming to and end though, as there aren’t really more options to discuss.
Turns out mom is having a change of heart about the whole situation.
Honestly I think she was just trying to be supportive and also just got caught up in the fun. We all know how fun coming up with names is.
But she said she loves [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] and can’t imagine me as anything else, although she’d still respect whatever I wanted. Her attachment for my name has given me a newfound appreciation for it. I’m willing to accept that family will always want to call me Whitney.
Out of all the nicknames we discussed I think [name_f]Nia[/name_f] is my favorite [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] NN. I won’t have family use it,
but I might try it out on new people I meet and just see if it sticks. I’m just not sure yet.
If I had no one else’s feelings to consider I’d probably go with [name_f]Marie[/name_f] NN [name_f]Mia[/name_f], I [name_m]FEEL[/name_m] like a [name_f]Mia[/name_f] inside. But with future hubby calling me “bella mia” at least I have a piece of that with me. If I end up moving away from my hometown for work, which is a possibility, and I still can’t drop the idea of [name_f]Mia[/name_f], I might tell people to call me that. I can just pretend that it’s my middle name. If I make close friends while going by [name_f]Mia[/name_f], I can just tell them that my family uses my given name [name_u]Whitney[/name_u].
At the very least, I can start using [name_f]Mia[/name_f] at Starbucks and places like that so I can smile when I see it written on my cup.
I just want to say thank you again to everyone who has been following along and providing their input. I don’t have any kids yet, but I love thinking of names, so this has been pretty fun! I might stick around to comment on others’ baby name threads.
PS. I just wanted to mention that while I loved the look of the name [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] written down, saying it out loud made me think of “win” too much. But changing it to [name_u]Gwynn[/name_u] gives a similar vibe, but gets rid of the “win” associations. Lately I’ve been thinking [name_u]Gwynn[/name_u] is quite cute and would consider it if I ever have a girl.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] I know this is a long time after all this convo has started but I too have the name [name_u]Whitney[/name_u]- [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] LeNae to be exact but I wanted to let you know my whole life most of my friends have called me Whitterz and I’m now 33 and still get called it to this day and it doesn’t bother me one bit!! So I’m not sure if you liked the sounds of it and thought you might want to use it too but I’d hate to see you change your own name cuz [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] [name_u]Marie[/name_u] is a pretty name and cuz I mean I share it with you too haha plus it’s not very often you run into other Whitney’s which is also nice to be different at least I think.
Give it a shot girl - you were born with that name for a reason so why change it?
