[name]How[/name] many of you here think that it makes sense to get two names you like out of one name? For example, if you like both [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name], naming your daughter [name]Penelope[/name] and calling her [name]Poppy[/name], or using [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name], or [name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Cora[/name], for instance? Personally, I feel that some of these nicknames do not have much to do with the full name, and therefore I wouldn’t be inclined to do this. But it seems a lot of people here are into it. I feel that if you like [name]Cora[/name], you should go with [name]Cora[/name] for the full name. The only exceptions would be where [name]Madeline[/name] can be shortened to [name]Maddie[/name], for example, because [name]Maddie[/name] is rarely a full name in its own right and actually makes sense as a nickname for [name]Madeline[/name].
What full name/nickname combos do you like, if any?
Some names (like [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name]) work on their own, and don’t sound like a nickname at all to me. [name]Jack[/name] is another one. But in most cases, I’d always say to go with the full name and use the nickname if you like. [name]Penelope[/name] is a great example, because there are so many nn possibilities…she may decide against being [name]Poppy[/name], but she has a lot of other options. Besides, she can always put [name]Penelope[/name] on the forms. I have a cousin named [name]Ellie[/name], because her parents felt like if they were going to call her something, it might as well be her proper name. I can understand wanting to stay away from [name]Elizabeth[/name], but [name]Ellie[/name] has a sort of young feel. (She’s 8.) I don’t know if she’ll be upset with them ever.
I am a huge advocate of full names. Most "nicknames* won’t age very well and I don’t think it’s fair to the child to make them sound like a 5 year old for the rest of their life.
[name]Cordelia[/name] nickname [name]Corrie[/name] / [name]Cora[/name] is one of my favorites. My SO insists on [name]Cordy[/name], I don’t like it very much, but it’s not terrible.
[name]Evangeline[/name] nickname [name]Evie[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name] nickname [name]Viv[/name] / [name]Vi[/name]/ [name]Vivi[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name] nickname [name]Tabbie[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] nickname [name]Lola[/name]
