[name]Hi[/name] Berries! My daughter’s name is [name]Fiona[/name] and we have a 3-year-old little cousin who calls her [name]Baby[/name] [name]Ona[/name]. I never call [name]Fiona[/name] by a nickname because I love her name so much, but I actually think [name]Ona[/name] is a much cuter nickname than Fi (which makes me think “fee” and who wants to pay those?) and definitely preferable to [name]FiFi[/name] (which I LOATHE, as my daughter is neither a poodle or a stripper…no offense intended, but that’s immediately what comes to my mind). So I was wondering:
Can you think of any cool less-than-common nicknames for names that you love? [name]How[/name] about nicknames you dislike for names that you love?
Maybe [name]Nana[/name] or [name]Fio[/name]. I actually really like [name]Ona[/name] though!
One of my favorite popular names is [name]Nathaniel[/name], but I HATE all of the nicknames I feel as though they cheapen the wonderful name [name]Nathaniel[/name]. Also another popular name I love is [name]Benjamin[/name] which I think I probably only love so much because of the ultra cool nickname [name]Benji[/name]!
I absolutely love the nn [name]Ona[/name] for [name]Fiona[/name]!
I have such a hard time accepting most nicknames especially for girls. I feel that with boys it might be hard to avoid using nicknames, especially once they get into their teens. Most boys I knew in high school went by their last name or some other nickname.
Most of my favorite names are on the longer names like [name]Georgina[/name], [name]Prudence[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Bartholomew[/name]. They usually come with lots of nn possibilities but I don’t think I would like to use any for my children.
Nn that I hate:
[name]Loulou[/name]
[name]Nate[/name]/[name]Nathan[/name]
[name]Chris[/name]
[name]Ty[/name]
[name]Allie[/name]
[name]Lolly[/name]
[name]Minnie[/name]
[name]Addy[/name]
[name]Penny[/name]
[name]Lottie[/name]
[name]Maddie[/name]
nn that I kind of like:
[name]Pru[/name]
[name]Pippa[/name]
I agree that [name]Ona[/name] is the best option for a nn for your daughter, it’s so cute!
[name]Ona[/name] is adorable!
The only name I love where I hate the nickname option is [name]Gregory[/name]. I love [name]Gregory[/name]! It’s just so strong and handsome sounding. I would use it on a son in a heartbeat…except that I know he’ll eventually be known as [name]Greg[/name]. Ugh. And it’s not like there’s any other nickname that I could use to deter people from [name]Greg[/name]. Gory? [name]Ory[/name]? Greggers? Yeah, there just isn’t a good nickname for [name]Gregory[/name].
I think both [name]Fio[/name] and [name]Ona[/name] work well.
@pansy - my dad’s name is [name]Gregory[/name] and everyone calls him [name]Greg[/name], but I think [name]Grey[/name] would work well as a nn.
I like how a 3-year-old came up with the best nickname for my child. [name]Little[/name] kids are pretty smart sometimes! A couple people mentioned [name]Fio[/name] as another nickname…Hubby and I joke that if [name]Fiona[/name] ever decides to become a rapper, she’d be known as [name]Lil[/name]’ [name]Fio[/name].
@chelseamae- I totally agree about disliking most girl nicknames. There are just so many gorgeous names, I hate to shorten them. Same with boy names, but it does seem that boy nicknames are hard to avoid. For example, my husband’s name is [name]Michael[/name], but our mothers, sisters, and I are the only ones who actually call him that. As common a name as it is, I really love the name [name]Michael[/name], but [name]Mike[/name]…not so much.
That’s how it is for my fiance, his name is [name]Jacob[/name] but most of his friends call him by his last name which is Crim… I dread the day my future son inherits that nickname on the basketball court or football field! [name]Even[/name] my dad’s name [name]Dean[/name] is ruined by a nickname, my uncles, extended family and all of his friends call him Deano. I should really ask him how that came about, I hope it’s not because of the flinstones. hahaha
