Nikola boy or girl?

I’m thinking of the name [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] for a boy (as in [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]). I live in the US though and I’m worried that it might be mistaken as a girl’s name. Lots of boy names end in the “a” sound though. [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u] etc. Is [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] usable?

I went to high school with a boy named [name_u]Nikola[/name_u], he’s 26 and in dental school now. Also a friend’s younger sister is [name_u]Nicola[/name_u], she’s probably 15 now.

I find [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] on a boy very refreshing.

I live in the US and I’ve only ever heard it on boys.

It’s a boy name for me, and I think it sounds strange on girls. Same goes for [name_u]Nikita[/name_u].

It’s a boy name for me & I also live in the US

The only [name_m]Nikolas[/name_m] i know have been boys, but i will admit that i prefer it on a girl.

In my country [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] is usually a feminine name. I know just one [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] and she is a middle-aged lady. However, in many countries it is a clearly masculine name. In Greece, for example, it is stressed in the middle syllable and is used as a nickname to Nikolaos ([name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]).

I think that in [name_u]America[/name_u] it will be associated with [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]. I don’t think it will sound as a feminine name.

Thanks for the replies! [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it? I’ve heard different pronunciations. [name_u]Nik[/name_u]-OH-la, Nee-ko-la, [name_u]Nik[/name_u]-uh-la?

[name_u]Nikola[/name_u] says boy to me where [name_f]Nicholla[/name_f] or [name_u]Nicola[/name_u] say girl.

[name_u]Nikola[/name_u] sounds like a very usable unisex name to me, but I prefer the [name_u]Nicola[/name_u] spelling for a girl. US here.

I’ve lived in the US my whole life, and I immediately thought of [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] as soon as I saw the thread title. Definitely boy.

It’s 100 % boy to me. I live in Europe.

I have a friend from [name_u]Peru[/name_u] w a son named Nikoa. Maybe you could take the l out and go w Nikoa if you want to make sure it sounds more like a boy’s name? Although I don’t think [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] sounds like a girl’s name either. They call him [name_u]Niko[/name_u] for short.

[name_u]Nikola[/name_u] is all boy to me - Im in place where there are lots of male [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] and barely one - if any - female [name_u]Nikola[/name_u]. Nikolina is female name version here.

[name_u]Nicola[/name_u] - OTOH - is all girl - there are no boys with this spelling here. No girls either, only Nikol and [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] for girls.
