Big brother Miles is getting a sister- but what to name her?
I like Nina, but hubby favors Nora. Very similar, I know, but Nina feels brighter and regal to me, whereas Nora feels softer and quieter (also way more trendy).
We also like Daria and hubby recently suggested Nadia as an interesting middle ground between Daria and the N-names, but I’m not sure we can carry it off as a white family in the northeast with no slavic background.
Middle name will be a family name, and all four names sound fine (but not amazing) with our last name.
[name_f]Nina[/name_f] is my favorite from your shortlist. I agree it’s brighter and more distinctive than [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. I don’t dislike [name_f]Daria[/name_f], but I do slightly worry about its similarity to the word diarrhea. [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] seems very international to me (like Nina), and I wouldn’t expect any specific cultural/ethnic background.
[name_f]Daria[/name_f] and [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] are my favourites as they feel unique but easily recognized. I think they work for any family. I knew girls with these names in the school where I worked so they feel familiar to me.
I love [name_f]Nina[/name_f] - bright and zippy! [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is nice too - a bit more classic and solid. [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] is great (if it helps, I’ve met three Nadias with no Slavic background)
[name_f]Nina[/name_f], I think, is my favourite overall.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite would be [name_f]Nora[/name_f]! I think either [name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Nina[/name_f] works well, I’m less keen on the others.
I prefer [name_f]Nina[/name_f] to [name_f]Nora[/name_f] as well, and I think it works great with [name_u]Miles[/name_u]. I also do really like [name_f]Nadia[/name_f], and I don’t think it would be weird on a child who isn’t of Eastern European background at all. Actually, the only [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] I know personally is African-American.
Other suggestions for you would be [name_f]Zara[/name_f] or [name_f]Petra[/name_f]!
I agree with your sentiments: Nina is more spirited and straightforward; Nora is more vintage and moody/bookish. (I prefer Nora myself but think Nina marginally suits Miles better.)
I personally don’t like Daria (just don’t like the sounds, nothing else), Nadia is more open and confident sounding to me.
I love Lydia but I can see my husband not getting on board with her either - not sure why but these are often a hard sell.
Other names:
Zoe (couldn’t get more sprightly!)
Diana
Mara
Helena
Zara
Thea
Naomi
Mia
Sadie
Cara / Kara
Claudia
Rayna
Serena
Esther (Esti) - but note that Chrissy Tiegan has a Miles and Esti (but her Esti from a hotel name not the beautiful Esther)
Elena
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] is by far my favorite from your list!
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] would all get my vote.
To me, [name_f]Nora[/name_f] sounds more regal or classic and overall just has a lovely sound.
i guess im in the minority here, but i find nora way more bright and energetic than nina !! nina always seems to me very sweet and quiet, while nora is so full of life. i absolutely adore her !!
i’m not personally a fan of daria (i think of the cartoon character, and diarrhoea), but i think nadia is lovely. i wouldn’t expect a nadia to have slavic heritage.
my suggestions for a sister to miles would be:
lola
nella
clara
juliet
iris
pippa
stella
freya
cora
eliza
I like [name_f]Nina[/name_f] and [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] best, particularly with [name_u]Miles[/name_u]. I don’t see [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] as being a super ethnic sounding name, so I don’t think it’s something to worry about.
Other suggestions:
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_u]Mina[/name_u]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Dinah[/name_f]
[name_f]Donna[/name_f]
[name_f]Naya[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f] and [name_u]Miles[/name_u] are just perfect together! [name_u]Jazzy[/name_u], cool, chic - this is the coolest sibset I’ve seen in a while.
[name_f]Nina[/name_f] is on my list, so I may be biased, but I really love it with [name_u]Miles[/name_u].
[name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Daria[/name_f] and [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] are perfectly fine, but they lack that wow factor and pale in comparison.
Ahhhh it made me so happy that you appreciate the music reference! It’s not a must for a name, but it certainly helped us pick [name_u]Miles[/name_u] as jazz is well-loved in our house.
I also love that [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is on your list! I don’t see it on many lists, and I did worry that it’s a little dated with the other -ina names, but I’d like to think it still feels fresh and interesting.
From your list I like [name_f]Nora[/name_f] best. You might consider [name_f]Annora[/name_f], it would give you the option of either [name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f] as nicknames and be something less common.
[name_f]My[/name_f] only other suggestion is [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. [name_u]Miles[/name_u] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] would make a great sibling pair. Like [name_u]Miles[/name_u], [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a classic with history and staying power. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] isn’t going through the spike in popularity that [name_f]Nora[/name_f] seems to be going through at the present time.
