I know a lot of people on here like names that have nicknames ready to go, and I’m all for that, but I also really love a lot of names best in their full forms. What names do you love the most in their full form? Any names that you might love a little more if a nn wasn’t so automatic with it?
Some of mine would be:
[name]Samara[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Kerensa[/name]
My daughter’s name is [name]Emily[/name] (she is 8 1/2), and I CRINGE whenever someone calls her “[name]Em[/name]”! To me, [name]Emily[/name] is so pretty without a nickname.
Some other names that are pretty without nn’s:
[name]Vivian[/name]/[name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name]/[name]Natalia[/name]
[name]Natasha[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Vanessa[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] (really can’t stand most of the nns, [name]Liz[/name], [name]Betsy[/name], etc.)
[name]Katherine[/name] (do not care for [name]Kathy[/name] or [name]Katie[/name])
[name]Laura[/name], ironically my own DD’s name (can not STAND the nn [name]Laurie[/name] or [name]Lori[/name])
[name]Emmeline[/name] and [name]Emilia[/name]-- I don’t mind [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Emmy[/name], but I much prefer the name in full.
[name]El[/name]- names-- I am really tired of [name]Ellie[/name]!
[name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Julia[/name]-- I like [name]Jules[/name], but not [name]Julie[/name]…
[name]Caroline[/name]-- [name]Carrie[/name], [name]Carly[/name], etc. sound a bit dated to me…
[name]Tabitha[/name]-- The most natural nickname would probably be [name]Tabby[/name], which reminds me of cats…
[name]Felicity[/name]-- Four syllables and I can’t come up with a nickname! (Well, there’s Lissy, [name]Lissa[/name], [name]Lisa[/name], and [name]Ellie[/name], but those are either dated or overused.)
[name]Allegra[/name]-- I don’t care for [name]Allie[/name]
[name]Priscilla[/name]-- [name]Prissy[/name] and [name]Silly[/name] aren’t the best nickname options…
[name]Daphne[/name]-- [name]Daffy[/name]. (There’s also [name]Fifi[/name] and [name]Nia[/name], but those are stretches.)
[name]Portia[/name]-- Poor isn’t the best, either. [name]Tia[/name] might work, but the [name]TIA[/name] in [name]Portia[/name] isn’t pronounced as tee-a…
[name]Catherine[/name]-- Ditto previous poster, I don’t like [name]Cathy[/name]. I think that [name]Cate[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] are nice, though…
[name]Bryony[/name]-- Not a fan of [name]Bree[/name]…
[name]Scarlett[/name]-- [name]Lettie[/name] is cute, Scar… not so much
[name]Cora[/name]-- [name]Don[/name]'t care for [name]Cory[/name], but [name]Cora[/name] is pretty short already, so I don’t think it needs to be shortened at all anyways…
I love the name [name]Catherine[/name]/ [name]Katherine[/name], but I really dislike [name]Kate[/name] as a nickname for it. [name]Catherine[/name] is so pretty and refined, but to me [name]Kate[/name] is overused and says “fiesty”, which isn’t usually bad, but it’s too much of an opposite from the full name.
I love the names [name]Michael[/name], [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Susan[/name].
Especially [name]Susan[/name] is ruined by making it [name]Susie[/name]. There’s also the beauty of [name]Matthew[/name], but [name]Matt[/name] is an allright nickname
I kind of think [name]Jenny[/name] makes [name]Jennifer[/name] look cheap D:
Generally, I am not big on nns, and I prefer many names in their full form. Two quick examples are: [name]Samuel[/name] rather than [name]Sam[/name], [name]Joseph[/name] rather than [name]Joe[/name]. On the other hand, there are a some names with nns that are as nice (or sometimes even cuter) than the original name. I happen to like nns such as [name]Kate[/name], [name]Cassie[/name], & [name]Maggie[/name].
Years ago, before I started my family, I decided I could not use the name [name]Christine[/name] (or [name]Christina[/name]) as a first name for a daughter because of the unisex nn [name]Chris[/name]. [name]Chris[/name] is equally common for boys and girls. [name]Even[/name] if she went by [name]Christa[/name] or [name]Christy[/name], it might be impossible to avoid having people call her [name]Chris[/name], and then that might stick instead. Contemplating the thrill of having a daughter and giving her a feminine name – I did not want the name to be one that could easily default to a unisex name. (It just didn’t fit in with the particular life-long dream I had of having and naming a daughter.)
My friend used to call my [name]Felicity[/name] doll “Fizzie”.
My mother thought it was SO cute, and she tells everyone that I called her that. I didn’t like it. Too spunky for my taste. I suppose I can admit it’s a little bit cute now.
I like my name, [name]Megan[/name], and hate being called [name]Meg[/name]. My husband’s name is [name]Michael[/name], which I love, and I never call him [name]Mike[/name]. I like my little brother’s name, [name]Daniel[/name], much better than [name]Dan[/name]. My daughter, due in [name]October[/name], will be named [name]Fiona[/name], but [name]Lord[/name] help the first person who calls her [name]FiFi[/name], lol.
Hmm…Come to think of it, I guess I’m not really a fan of nicknames at all. Can’t think of any that I like better than the full version of the name.
