No such thing as a dated name sound?

So I was looking at a list of names in alphabetical order and the similarities struck me. It’s been established that vintage names come back into style, but I don’t know if it takes as long as people think, or if names truly go out of style.

E.g.

[name]Pamela[/name] --> [name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Doris[/name] --> [name]Dorothy[/name]/[name]Dora[/name]
[name]Phyllis[/name] --> [name]Phillipa[/name]
[name]Irene[/name] --> [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]–> [name]Jenna[/name] --> [name]Jane[/name]

People do this ALL the time. [name]Ashley[/name] too common? Name her [name]Ashlyn[/name]. Except for it’s not really a different name. [name]Kelly[/name] dated? [name]Kellen[/name] for a boy is new.

And there’s the trend of sticking -son and -ton on the end of names to make them “different”.

Any other dated names with trendy/up-and-coming equivalents?

I actually like the name [name]Doris[/name]. To me, its kind of a Hollywood glamour name, as in [name]Doris[/name] [name]Day[/name]. I may be the only one out there though.

I would say that certain name sounds can be dated, although it doesn’t happen often - I personally would class -is names such as [name]Doris[/name] and [name]Phyllis[/name] as dated. Although having said that, [name]Iris[/name] is popular, so perhaps you are right!
