North

I really love the name [name_u]North[/name_u] for a girl. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s useable? Or did [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian make a joke out of the name?

Thanks everyone.

I personally think it’s really cool. I wish [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian hadn’t used it, but I don’t think it’s entered joke territory. Curious to see other opinions.

I like the name [name_u]North[/name_u]. I think it’s unique and fun but I don’t think it’s a joke just because [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian used it. If you like it and decide to go with it, I think people will ask you if you were inspired by Kimye, so that’s something to think about/be prepared for. If you arm yourself with a few lighthearted jokes about it, I’m sure you’ll be fine and it’ll be received nicely

I don’t like it (and not because of Kimye). It just seems so blunt. [name_u]Nori[/name_u] is a cute NN but I would prefer using [name_u]West[/name_u] if I had to pick a direction.

My boyfriend’s surname begins with [name_u]West[/name_u] and I had always joked we would call our daughter [name_u]North[/name_u] but [name_u]Kim[/name_u] K bet me to it! (Not really, I was only half serious)

I think it comes across as ‘trendy’ due to the Kardashian connection, but it’s still usable imo.

I agree with the PP who said if you really really want to use this, go ahead, but arm yourself with witty comebacks to all the people who will ask whether you like the Kardashians or Kimye. I personally wouldn’t be able to introduce my daughter [name_u]North[/name_u] without being slightly embarrassed (only because of the celebrity connection.) Certain names just stick with the celebrity, like [name_f]Apple[/name_f]. However, I’m also too conservative to use names like [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] and [name_u]Rebel[/name_u], so I’m not really in your league.

I don’t personally like it (I agree with a pp that it feels very blunt), but I think it’s only a joke because [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian’s [name_u]North[/name_u] is [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u]. If her surname wasn’t another direction, it wouldn’t be a joke.

Also, if it was a name that I’d ever encountered as a name before hearing it on [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u], it wouldn’t feel as linked to Kimye - [name_u]Kim[/name_u]'s sister named her kids [name_u]Mason[/name_u] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], which were well established as names beforehand, so while those names are connected to the family, if I meet a little [name_u]Mason[/name_u] or a little [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] I don’t assume that their parents got their names from the Kardashians. If I met a girl named [name_u]North[/name_u] who was around the same age as or younger than [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] I’d definitely think that her parents got the name from Kimye.

I don’t think its a joke at all. I think if it’s a name you love, go with it!

I don’t think [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian made a joke of it. I personally think it’s masculine sounding and prefer South for a girl, but if you love it, go for it. I agree with others that some may make light hearted jokes, but I think more because it’s unconventional. I also agree, I don’t think North is the issue, it’s the whole north west thing. Any name you choose, some will like, some won’t. The difference is if you go with something safe like [name_f]Olive[/name_f], it seems everyone will smile and say they love the name. If you go unconventional, more people will voice their real opinion thinking it will change your mind (I know, I am pretty “out there”). At the same time, based on your love for north, people are probably intrigued by what you will go with. I say if you love north, go for it, and don’t worry too much about what [name_u]Kim[/name_u] or other celebrities are doing.

I also agree it’s the [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] thing that get to people, just like [name_f]Beyonce[/name_f]'s [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian made a joke out of the name [name_u]North[/name_u], but I do think it’s heavily associated with her and if you name a child that you and your child will both hear comments about [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian, [name_m]Kanye[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u], and [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] over and over again.

I liked [name_u]North[/name_u] for a boy before [name_u]Kim[/name_u] and [name_m]Kanye[/name_m] had their child. I feel pretty neutral toward them, but I would never used that name now.

[name_u]North[/name_u] has just always been an incredibly rare name. It’s never been given to more than 5 girls in the U.S. in any given year, so since [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian used it and that got enormous media coverage, it’s going to be heavily associated with her.

I don’t think she made a joke out of the name [name_u]North[/name_u], but I do think she made a joke out of her child’s name, if that makes sense. [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] is horrible. [name_u]North[/name_u] itself is fine. I agree with others, just be ready for a little teasing since baby [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] is most people’s first association with the name right now.

I’ll put it this way…if your last name is [name_u]West[/name_u], [name_f]East[/name_f], South or begins with any of those, don’t do it.

I don’t really like [name_u]North[/name_u] or [name_u]Nori[/name_u], but the only reason that it became just a plain joke is because of the child’s surname. If she would’ve been given the surname Kardashian or heck would’ve been a [name_m]Smith[/name_m], [name_m]Brown[/name_m], [name_m]Jones[/name_m], etc, it would’ve have been more of a matter of just another silly celebrity baby name.

I wouldn’t use it…for two reasons:

  1. [name_u]Kim[/name_u] K ruined it/people will think she inspired your choice.
  2. It sounds more like a boy’s name to me.

What about [name_f]Nora[/name_f]?

I think it’s fine as long as your last name is not one of the following: Dakota, Carolina, West, East, South, North, Wind, Star, Light

But I agree with this and think it would get very old very fast:

“I don’t think Kim Kardashian made a joke out of the name North, but I do think it’s heavily associated with her and if you name a child that you and your child will both hear comments about Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and North West over and over again.”

It would have been odd no matter what, but it would be embarrassing now. Kind of like declaring yourself a [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian follower. And oh, the poor child.

I really don’t care for this name, especially on a girl. It’s very masculine sounding to me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you love the name and decide to go for it, Kimye’s baby is still very young and people will always assume you named your child after their’s. I agree with boyandgirl – I would not want my child connected to the Kardashians.

Sorry, I agree. Everyone will assume you are copying [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian. If you really love [name_u]Kim[/name_u] Kardashian and won’t mind constant comments about the name and the Kimyes then go for it.

I think it was a joke before, but [name_u]Kim[/name_u] made it worse somehow
