Hello Berries, I recently purchased two books by [name_u]Michael[/name_u] Caputo and I thought I would share some of the best names from his books entitled “[name_m]New[/name_m], [name_u]Unique[/name_u] and Original Names for [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Girls” and “[name_m]New[/name_m], [name_u]Unique[/name_u] and Original Names for [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Boys (subtitle: Make Your Child Stand Out Among the Multitudes). Personally, I think there are enough unique names in the world that making up your own isn’t really necessary but to each their own. The introduction states that the names contained in these books are from the author’s imagination alone (although I did find quite a few names listed that were already in existence). While my preference is for names of depth and history, I found some of his “newer” names were quite interesting. Below is a list of the most evocative options (due to the length Nameberry will not allow me to post the whole list on the original post so stay tuned for the second part to follow). Since these are “made up”, you can pronounce them any way you like and many of them could be unisex as they’re contained in both books. Some sound like common words, more familiar names, “smooshes” and others even sound a bit like diseases. A few I think would even make Tolkien proud. I have bolded my faves. Which ones do you like or dislike, Berries?

I agree, there are tonnes of actual names with meanings and history that people could use. Most of these just sound like noises cobbled together.
I think these are all right though:
Anelle - Wasn’t this the name of a girl in [name_u]Steel[/name_u] Magnolias- perhaps spelt differently? It’s ok.
Arovan - Sounds quite mystical and Tolkein-ish.
Davitha - I think Davith is already a legit [name_m]David[/name_m] variation, so Davitha could work.
Layncour - Yes, I’m liking this one! It’s that lovely, brave ‘cour’ ending- very mediaeval and warrior-like.
Renfel - This is one letter short of a fairly common surname where I am, so I like this. [name_u]Ren[/name_u] is a great nn.
Velsa - Has a pretty sound.
Zida - Short, strong and simple.
These really don’t work for me:
Clezymia - sounds like a VD
Lorrys - all I see is ‘lorries’. Not exactly flattering to be named after a method of transportation.
[name_f]Fania[/name_f]/[name_f]Fanya[/name_f] - No form of [name_f]Fanny[/name_f] will ever work again in the UK
Lumen - yeah… makes me think of fat build-up in arteries.
Oblah …di, Ob La Da, life goes on, brah!
@charlieandperry - [name_f]Annelle[/name_f] was [name_u]Daryl[/name_u] [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]'s character in [name_u]Steel[/name_u] Magnolias. I love the vintage [name_f]Fanny[/name_f] but the association has ruined it!
I’m not mad for any of these, really, but I have been a part of an inner-city ministry through my church for the past two or three years, and I work the registration booth. It’s sort of like vacation Bible school, but it goes on throughout the year, one [name_m]Saturday[/name_m] afternoon each month (consequently, it was today!). I’ve come across tons and tons of made-up names, most of which I find unappealing, but sometimes people manage to strike a really cool balance between believable and cool, but also trendy and made-up, which I find pretty cool. I wouldn’t use any of them, I don’t think, but they’re still cool names, imo! I, too, prefer names with history, and maybe it’s just I love the little girls attached to these names, but nonetheless, I find them quite cool:
Noralys (pronounced like [name_f]Nora[/name_f]-leese. Like a smoosh of [name_f]Nora[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]?)
Arianny (ah-ree-ah-nee. Like a mix of [name_f]Ariana[/name_f]/[name_f]Arianne[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]?)
Lexanny (new little one I met today–pronounced lex-AHN-ee. She was the most adorable baby doll! She went by [name_f]Lexy[/name_f], which I appreciated for the first time in a very, very long time. I assumed it was spelled Lexani, which I thought would be pretty cool, too. Like [name_f]Alexine[/name_f]/[name_f]Lexine[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] smooshed, I suppose…)
Marianyeliz (pronounced, essentially, like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-Angelise. I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-Angelise looks much prettier, but the name was lovely, as was she)
Arianny is by far my favorite of the bunch, though–perhaps because I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Arianne[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] so much, and prehaps because the two little Ariannys that came to our VBS this summer were two of the most adorable little baby girls I have ever seen in my entire life. I can easily say I’d love to meet another Arianny.
