Not happy with current baby name and I need your input!

We have a baby daughter but I’m not sure that I like the name we’ve been using so far. I would really like some feedback on the names below. What are your , thoughts, associations ect. If you like to rank them please do!

I like vintage and classic names, but I’m also into clunky names, and they must have a strength to them. I don’t want them to be too harsh though …

Suggestions on nice combos are welcome as well (first and middle name(s)).

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlo[/name_f] / [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

Thanks!

The ones I love from your list:

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (I love both spellings, but this is my favourite.)
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] (wonderful, and so many great nns possible, especially [name_f]Nora[/name_f].)
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (although, it seems more sweet than strong).
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] (this is my favourite - it’s strong, and so elegant.)
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is a combo I love.

You have a great list of names!
What have you been calling her?
What is her personality like?

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Joan[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabina[/name_f]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Keturah[/name_f]
[name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and [name_f]Vera[/name_f]! I want to like [name_f]Esther[/name_f], but I like it more for its nickname options (Estey and [name_f]Tess[/name_f]!) than the full name itself. I would suggest [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Nadia[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]. Can I ask you what your daughter’s name is?

We have used [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f], but I’m just not sure …

What do you think of the names in my list, what characteristics do each of the names have in your opinion?

I agree with you on [name_f]Esther[/name_f], intellectually I do like it, but I think it sounds sort of dusty. We used [name_f]Vera[/name_f] in the beginning, but didn’t think she was a [name_f]Vera[/name_f], and I thought it was to hard for her. Then we “decided on” [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and also used the nn [name_f]Esti[/name_f] (Es-tee) but I think it’s too cutesy.

I tend to gravitate towards [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Marlo[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], ect, but my husband istn’t so sure about these. As my background is multilingual I tend to like names in English, that my husband thinks are awkward since we live in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u].

I’m just sort of grieving not giving my daughter a name that I REALLY love, and not just in an intellectual way but in an instinctive way. I would love for her to be named [name_f]Marlo[/name_f], but he says no. So, I just wanted to get some feedback to sort of see where I stand now.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - a little stuffy, but a good solid name.
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] - reminds me of an ingredient in moisturizer.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - reminds me of one of my favourite Shakespearean heroines.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - a nice variant of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. Spunky.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - regal, but not too stuffy.
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] - makes me think of an eccentric old witch (not evil, just a bumbling one with frizzy strangely-coloured hair).
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f] - a more exotic spelling, but I prefer the old-fashioned one.
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - I much prefer [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] seems a little too cutesy for a future adult.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - a great namesake, the ancient queen.
[name_f]Liv[/name_f] - a cute nickname, but nothing more.
[name_f]Margo[/name_f] - pretty, but not my favourite.
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] - see [name_f]Margo[/name_f].
[name_f]Marlo[/name_f] / [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] - not a fan.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - I dislike the sound, but I love the [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl character.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - cute.
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - nice, if dated. Dislike nickname [name_f]Becca[/name_f].
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - I liked this, but then a discovered it was pronounced veer-uh as opposed to vair-uh.

Wow, I like a lot of your names!

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - I love both! with a slight preference for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]/[name_f]Elinor[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] the best, but they are all beautiful and uber usable
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - love! Beautiful name, with cool option of [name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/ [name_f]Margot[/name_f] - lovely name, I prefer the [name_f]Margo[/name_f] spelling
[name_f]Marlo[/name_f] / [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] - great name, more modern than the rest of your list though. I know a 14 year old [name_u]Marlow[/name_u].
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - lovely fun “clunky” name with tons of great nn’s, my favorite is [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - love! beautiful name
[name_f]Liv[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]! If I had a girl today I’d name her [name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - nice solid classic
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - nice, not a favorite, but would be cool to meet one, I prefer [name_f]Verity[/name_f].

Not my style:
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]

[name_f]Liv[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] would be my pick
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] would be awesome as well. nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessie[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]

I think the one that works fantastically in English and Swedish is [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], since the pronunciation is basically the same and there are several cutesy and not-so-cutesy nicknames to choose from.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is also lovely but I think I love it a lot for the nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (which might be too cutesy for you).
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is just a bit harsh / hard sounding too me.
I pronounce [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] differently but have to say I like both of them only in English.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] might be difficult in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], I don’t know if they would actually keep the “e” silent (I hope you know what I mean).
I’m just not fond of [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] but that’s just my style and [name_f]Marlo[/name_f] looks more like a boy name to me.
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] is stunning and would work very well in both languages, plus it’s a rare gem.
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] still reminds me of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Alba[/name_f].
And [name_f]Liv[/name_f] is a bit too short for me but a perfectly usable name.

I adore the combinations [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] [name_f]Liv[/name_f] (the first one is my favourite) and think that you can’t really go wrong with your list.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - Ew.

[name_f]Alba[/name_f] - [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], The Time Travelers Wife.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - Divergent, good girl, cute nicknames.

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], prefer this spelling.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - Old.

[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] - [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like, prefer just [name_f]Nora[/name_f].

[name_f]Elinor[/name_f] - Ugly spelling of an old name.

[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - Cute, but best as a nickname for a formal name.

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - Ugly.

[name_f]Liv[/name_f] - [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], nickname [name_f]Liv[/name_f].

[name_f]Margo[/name_f] - Good girl, [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Sitters Club.

[name_f]Margot[/name_f] - Unnecessary t at the end, [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_m]Frank[/name_m]'s sister.

[name_f]Marlo[/name_f] / [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] - Prefer [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], but don’t like it at all.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - The girl [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] in the movie [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], good girl, don’t like it.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - Popular amongst celebs, don’t like it.

[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - [name_f]Love[/name_f].

[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - Wang, I think… She makes purses.

From your list these seem soft but strong to me

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]

What about

[name_f]Marin[/name_f]/[name_u]Marion[/name_u]/marigold
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]/[name_f]Clio[/name_f]/[name_f]Callisto[/name_f]
[name_f]Lenora[/name_f]
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]
[name_f]Althea[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]

Alinore would be a good option, it softens it, keeps it unique, and anything as mn will pair nicely.

From your list, I love…

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

I like your list a lot I suggest [name_f]Olive[/name_f] NN [name_f]Liv[/name_f]. It’s a crush if mine and I can see either name on every age.

From your lovely list I like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] best.

I do think [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] is great, but if it’s not right, it’s not right.
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] does sound like quite a strong/hard name and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] is quite soft with the vowel followed by soft ‘s’
So maybe you need to look for names that fall into the middle ground between hard and soft sounds…

For a ‘stronger’ alternative to romantic and feminine [name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Aster[/name_f] (my fave girls name in the world)
Estée
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f])
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f])
[name_f]Trista[/name_f]
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]

As a ‘softer’ alternative to short and snappy [name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Veda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Leta[/name_f]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Kira[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadira[/name_f]
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]

It’s a shame your DH won’t let you use [name_f]Marlo[/name_f], if that’s the name you love. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] or [name_u]Arley[/name_u]

I’d drop the ‘E’ and go with [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]–so sweet!

What does you DH think of Mahli or [name_u]Marley[/name_u] or [name_f]Marli[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Marlo[/name_f]

When we were having our first child we were set on [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] with nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f], or just [name_f]Nora[/name_f], for a girl. But it was a boy and we named him [name_u]Noah[/name_u] [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]. So [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is just going to be to matchy with [name_u]Noah[/name_u] I’m afraid.

I actually love [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] but my husband thinks it’s a nn and not a proper name. This was the first name that popped up in my mind when I first held her.

I understand what you mean. In Swedish it’s soft sounding though, but I’m not overly fond of the english pronounciation, although I find it spunky and I love the way it looks spelled.

I agree! I just love it in english though! And I really like the nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f], but people in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] generally don’t, among them my husband.

I know what you mean, but I think nowadays people know when to pronounce a name “the english way” but in swedish, so I think it works as “Oliv”.

Thanks! I’ve had [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] on my list but she relly isn’t a [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]. [name_f]Clio[/name_f] to me is a name om a [name_m]Renault[/name_m] car model. The other ones are not my cup of tea.
