Nursery theme ideas

Okay, so to distract me from waiting until I find out the gender on the 12th, I have been thinking of nursery theme ideas.

Girl
Mermaid theme - think corals and aqua colors. A pretty mermaid picture, seashells, seahorses, etc.
Peacock theme - think the colors of a peacock feather for accessory choices, probably one pretty picture of a peacock, but the rest just using the colors.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland - cream colored walls, neat looking clock, the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland books, etc.

Boy
[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] - tan colored walls, browns, greens and reds. Old maps on the walls.
Pirates - haven’t really gotten very far on what I think I would do with this theme.

So berries which theme do you like, let me know your pick for boy and girl. Thanks in advance! And of course, ideas are always welcome and greatly appreciated.

I hope all the sites I posted work! I would probably go with pirates/mermaids because you could start getting stuff before knowing the gender and it would work for either. I also think it would be the easiest to find stuff for and pull off.

Girl
Mermaid:I think this one would be the easiest to find stuff for since nautical is pretty popular. I’ve seen teal ombre walls that could look really good with a water theme.

Some cute rockers (pricey though): http://overthemoonchildren.com/collections/rockers

Peacock: In my head it’s a hard one to pull off, but if done right it would look gorgeous. I tried looking online for ones others have done and nothing really caught my attention. I did like the decor on the shelf on this site: Tiny Mitten Secrets: Baby Girl Nursery: The Purple in Peacock
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland: Definitely a theme you could have some fun with! Giant-sized and pint-sized (within reason) things around the room, fun colors, etc.

Boy
Pirates: You could use a lot of stuff from a mermaid type room for here too. I would probably just make it a little more boat/treasure oriented.

[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m]: This could definitely be a fun theme.

I would go with an [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland theme for a girl and a Pirates theme for a boy.

For the Pirate theme you go with probably the same colors as [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] and have a Jolly [name_m]Roger[/name_m] and some treasure maps. Maybe even a treasure chest to use as a toy chest or something.

For a boy nursery I’ve always liked the thought of a nautical theme and a princess theme for a girl (I know a princess theme is really typical though).

I think Mermaid theme for the girls would be perfect (so easy to find things & the artistic possibilities are endless)! Blues & Greens & Corals, flowy fabrics & artworks depicting fish, shells, coral…
For dudes I like the idea of an explorer theme. You have more options then. Jungle stuff, caves, sailing, scuba diving, archaeology, space exploration… I’m envisioning maps & compasses, old books, binoculars & stars on the ceiling.

I love the idea of the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland theme! And I’ve seen some amazing Dr Seuss themed nurseries which are great for both genders. Good luck!

The mermaid theme would be fun, and as other posters said it would be relatively easy to pull off.
However, I adore the idea of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland. White and red roses, clock, all the fun characters from the story, you would have so much room for creativity with that theme.
For boys I love the [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] theme! Adventure! [name_m]Danger[/name_m]! Exploration! Now I want to rewatch the series…

If I had my way, I would have a dragon and knight themed nursery. Someone from nameberry actually gave me some of the inspiration. Pretty grey/blue castle walls done in paint, a flying dragon mobile, medieval looking red and gold bed spread sigh

@ottertails -
Thanks for all the photo inspiration! I especially love the rockers, they are adorable. The site you posted for [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] is where I got my inspiration too.

@bookworm26 - treasure maps would be neat to add to the nursery for a boy if we go with the pirate theme.

@truenature - I agree that the colors for the mermaid theme are amazing, that was the first reason that I thought of doing that theme is because of the pretty colors. And I think I might be changing to the explorer theme for a boy, it has many more possibilities. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea of the compasses, maps and binoculars. That was my thoughts for the [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] theme.

@sunkissedchild - I have seen some cool Dr Seuss themed nurseries on Pintrest.

@vblanch - I agree that it would be cool to do [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland with lots of cool touches. I just finished watching the [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] movies the other day, they are pretty good. Ooh, I so wish you could use the theme of dragons and knights. That would be so amazing, there are so many options for that one. What nursery theme will you be doing?

The peacock nursery that I saw online was at
Modernmommyhood.com/2013/02/[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]-peacock-inspired-nursery.html
Or, if the link doesn’t work just go to modernmommyhood.com and search for the peacock nursery. It’s pretty neat.

Well, me and my SO are living with his disabled grandmother, so for the most part it is a mutually beneficial arrangement. We get a room and a nursery with full access to the kitchen for half the price of a one bedroom apartment, and in return we feed her and run errands for her. But she INSISTS that since she bought jungle decorations for that spare room years ago that it needs to be jungle themed, which is disappointing because the only other grandchild of this generation in either family is my cousin and she has a jungle themed nursery. So I might sneak some dinosaur touches in to the room…shhhh

I really like the alice in wonderland and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] jones themes
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] in wonderland you could go all out with mushroom chairs giant flowers around the crib crazy tea party
[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] jones you could have treasure chest neutral colours maps and compass laying about antique wood furniture

It will be years until I have kids but I’ve thought about doing either a forest theme with mainly dark greens and browns and having the night sky with a real star chart painted on the ceiling or just going all out with a night sky star theme for the whole room

@vblanch - I think that would be cool to add dinosaur touches to the theme. It would complement that jungle theme nicely.

Of your choices I’d say the mermaid theme is the best, though I’m all for anything nautical so I’m biased. Shells decorating the walls, a large net strung cat-cornered to hold toys, bubbles and seaweed mobiles, treasure chests for toy chests, and lots of navy, aqua, teal, yellow, and red.

And I really like the idea for an [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] theme, or the recent change to an exploration theme. I think that can easily merge the best of both worlds from [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] and Pirates.

For me, my first boy will definitely have a space-themed nursery. [name_m]Rocket[/name_m] mobiles, greys, blues, and purples, stars all over the place, and nebulas painted on the walls. For a girl I’m thinking carnival. Elephants, carousal mobiles, a “big top” hanging from the ceiling over the baby bed, and such.

@darcywillow - thanks for the ideas! :slight_smile:

Your theme of stars is awesome. It would be so cool to look up at the ceiling and have the star chart painted up there.

@jess0044 - I never thought about having a net hung up for toys, great idea that is also space saving. I also really like the idea of a seaweed mobile. I too love all things nautical and ocean related.

The space theme for a boy sounds cool! I’m sure your future child would adore it.

I love the mermaid theme with pinks, aqua & omg seahorses!!! For boys I like the nautical theme too but pirates work!
I think I’ll want to be surprised when the time comes, but I lovvve pink & gray together so I’m thinking of maybe doing gray & white until the baby is born and then incorporating pink or blue?

@lcd1912 -
That’s pretty cool about your idea about the gray and white and then adding touches of blue or pink once baby is born. We had discussed waiting for a delivery room surprise, but we decided we really wanted to know so we go back to the doctors on [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] for the anatomy scan, however we are going to wait and find out with everyone else in our families with a cake reveal on [name_m]Saturday[/name_m].

The mermaid idea is great, I can imagine it looking beautiful. We have an owl theme, neutral walls with pale blue, blush pink, grey, and mint green accents. We wanted to keep it as gender ambiguous as possible so we wouldn’t have to redecorate. Good luck!

I love all the themes that you have, my favourite is probably [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland and Pirates.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are:
[name_m]Forest[/name_m] Theme - Owl, fox, trees ect. decor. Greens and browns.
Astrology Theme - Plastic glow in the dark stars on the ceiling in constellations. Blues, golds and silvers.

I love the idea of the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland theme! [name_f]My[/name_f] sister had a ‘garden / forest’ themed nursery (lots of peaceful, earthy greens and browns, leaf and floral motif’s, a tree shaped blackboard sticker on the wall, herb garden on the windowsill, paper flowers, floral bunting and floral garlands, watering cans for holding flowers, pencils, creams, etc, pots for holding similar items, a tiny toy mouse on the shelf, that was holding a wheelbarrow, chandelier strewn with silk ribbons, leaves, flowers, and a little birds nest with china eggs, etc.). I had a similar theme, but my ceiling was painted to look like clouds, which I adored. It was quite economical, from what I can remember, and it ages really well.

For boys, a Pirate theme sounds nice. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland sounds amazing though.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first set of twins had a peacock themed room because that was the type of colours we had for our wedding, I wore a sari for my wedding because my husband is [name_f]Indian[/name_f] and we draped that across the wall and it looked lovely. [name_f]My[/name_f] sari was turquoise, blues and purples and it looked lovely against the gold walls. I decided at the last minute to make it peacock themed and found some a beautiful canvas with a peacock on it and then I found other paintings and pictures with peacocks and feathers and all that jazz. The girls are older now and still have the same decor and they love it, we bought them mosquito nets and then bought (fake) peacock feathers that I sowed onto them to go above their beds.

And [name_f]Leela[/name_f] had an enchanted forest (a la Midsummer [name_m]Night[/name_m]'s [name_u]Dream[/name_u]), we painted the walls silver and then got stencils of trees that we painting in grey and then the leaves and flowers and animals in more bright colours. I really love it and [name_f]Leela[/name_f] still loves it now and has the animals named. I also loved that we got to use lots of types of woods in her room because it added to the forest feel.

These twins that are cooking right now have a ballet themed room with pale blue walls and canvases of ballet dancers around the room, along with a stencilled swan for Swan [name_u]Lake[/name_u]. There’s still some work to do to it and they won’t be in that room till they are 5 or so months old so I’ve still got some time!

I think that the mermaid idea sounds lovely as does the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland one. I would love to do a [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m] themed room!

I love the idea of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] [name_m]Jones[/name_m], as nice as pirates is I feel like it could be a little overdone…

Best if luck!

@daylight - I now know that I’m expecting a girl, and we’ve narrowed the nursery decor down to either mermaid theme or peacock theme. What color gold did you use on the walls in their room?
