:o)

@river_dweller,
Thank you for reminding me of the most important thing; I need to bring things back to basics and ask myself which is the name that makes me happy (without worrying about popularity and selecting the ‘right’ style)?

@cactusgram,
Thanks you for suggesting Oleander! I actually love everything about the sound of this name but am concerned about its association with poison. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think this matters? Does its meaning make it a deal breaker?

@laurs
A big thank you for your reassuring words xx
You’ve brought up some great points about the whole baby naming process and the fact that any name can be scrutinised, regardless of what it is. I agree what you’ve said about no name being perfect. Not everyone is going to share our naming tastes and style. If only I could relax more about finding a name!

@emmalou23
Thank you for all of your research and suggestions!

I love [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]! I do understand your concern about its popularity though. [name_m]How[/name_m] about (sorry about any repeats):

@tdfm,
Please don’t be sorry! You’ve thought of some amazing names :slight_smile: [name_m]Jonty[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_m]Calloway[/name_m] are fantastic :slight_smile:

Everyone has been so wonderful in their support of [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] with our children’s names. Thank you! It’s a relief to hear that although [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] has gained in popularity these past few years, many of you have said that they’ve never actually heard this name being used much in real life.
@laurs,
You’re story about your son’s beautiful name not being as popular as Nameberry suggests gives me some hope!!

Should I be worrying so much about others’ viewpoint of this name under the comments section on the actual [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] page? I know that the realistic and logical answer to that is no, but some people have really been quite cruel about wanting to use this name for a son. Why would anyone be so horrible about the use of a name? But then I ask myself why I actually care so much about other people’s opinion. I suppose this is why we get on to Nameberry in the first place - being name nerds - to voice our opinions about the names we come across on this site.

Sorry for venting - just had to get that off my chest! It’s hard not to worry when I see that opinions about this name are so divided x

To be honest it sounds like his name might already be [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] :slight_smile: You just need to convince yourself you can use it.

[name_f]Every[/name_f] name on Nameberry has good and bad comments. On all the names I love and are top of our list for a real baby there are comments along the lines of ‘urgh why would ANYONE name a baby this’ etc., etc.,. People will always have their opinion and it won’t match yours, it’s just that when online people are much more likely to write down really negative comments that they wouldn’t dream of saying in person. I don’t like a lot of the names in the current top 100 but I respect that others do. My opinion on why I don’t like those names do not need to be written down for the sole purpose of making a new parent or expectant parent anxious about others’ views on the name. But unfortunately many others believe their voice should be heard no matter what (I won’t go into a rant about social media etc here lol). It’s just the tightrope you have to walk if you love uncommon names…

[name_m]Just[/name_m] think, if everyone loved the name you want to use, it would no longer be a ‘rare’ underused name, everyone would want to use it! By wanting an uncommon name you are automatically looking at names many people do not want to use and likely don’t like (and write openly about why they don’t like). Have a google of some people called [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], look at professional profiles pages and look for people with the name out there in real life. This will help you see that the name is usable and those already-named-[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]’ are doing fine even though there is a page on the internet that says otherwise.

[name_f]DO[/name_f] IT! Go with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] :slight_smile:

And if not, [name_u]August[/name_u] is so dashing

I personally [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. I’ve never met one in real life, but the name is gorgeous. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t be afraid of what some comments say. It only matters if both of you and your son like it. I love how it sounds with your kids, too.

[name_u]Kit[/name_u] as a nn for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is perfect! [name_u]Kit[/name_u] has been a name used for years, it’s very Victorian! Which really fits with the sibset

@sunday_cami,
I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s so true about comments being said on here that would never be said in person!
You’re so right about the ‘tightrope’ we walk in our love for less frequently used names. And you’ve just made me realise that I’d much prefer it this way; reading unkind comments about the names I like, rather than everyone liking exactly the same names as me and potentially causing these names to become more popular. Thank you for highlighting this!

I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is just fantastic, won’t ever be so popular that he’s one of many in his surroundings (I believe). and works wonderfully with older siblings [name_f]Adela[/name_f]!de & 3dmund. I also love the idea of nickname ‘[name_u]Kit[/name_u]’! I also think you should ignore the negative comments and focus on the many, many positive ones, in regard to the name’s comment section here.

My suggestion, and one that hasn’t been mentioned is [name_m]Tolliver[/name_m] – based on you husbands love for [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and your own desire for something less common. It’s not Victorian, but I think it works nicely with his siblings names. (I still vote for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] ultimately, though)

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] from [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] gray… [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] sound nice?

If not I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] for short.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] & [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] are the winners for me. I think they goes really well with older siblings.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] or [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

So sorry to hear about your predicament. From what I’ve gathered, it seems what you’re asking for with regard to requirements is broad (ie - Victorian vintage) it’s purely a matter of whether or not you love it. To help with this, I’d love to know what it is that makes you love your other childrens’ names: style, historical significance, nicknames, etc. For now I’ll just list any that I think would work and that fit your requirements.

@jonquils,

Thank you for thinking of these gorgeous two combos using [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] as a first. They both flow so effortlessly and smoothly :slight_smile:

@sunniva,
[name_m]Tolliver[/name_m] is a wonderful alternative to [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]! I’m just concerned that it might cause confusion for others who aren’t name nerds like ourselves? And that he’d have to keep correcting people that ‘No, it’s not [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] … It’s [name_m]Tolliver[/name_m]. As in [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] with a T.’ But I know - these concerns shouldn’t matter so much and we should ultimately choose a name we love, regardless of all the potential ‘bumps in the road’ that may ensue because of it.

aaaaarrhgh! What to do? What to do?

@ceruleanstardust,
Thank you - If I wasn’t overthinking everything I’m sure he’d already have a name! You’re right that it really does come down to what I love and the major problem here is that I don’t love anything that I’ve come across yet quite enough to just go for it. Nothing is sticking out to me in the same way as our daughter’s and son’s names :frowning:

What about [name_m]Matteo[/name_m]? I think it would fit nicely with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

Did you come up with a name? I’d love to hear what you choose!

I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is still unusual enough to use and works perfectly with your other names.

My suggestions -

[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_u]Bertie[/name_u]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Mervyn[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
[name_m]Jennings[/name_m]

I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] works your other names and I don’t think it will be too popular. Often names are popular on Nameberry and seldom used in real life. Perhaps look at where it ranks on other sites.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone :blush:
Thank you for all of your amazing suggestions. I can’t describe how heartwarming it feels to log on here and see that you are all still offering beautiful suggestions for my predicament.

Our little boy is doing great but is still going by ‘baby’ at home as we can’t settle on anything. I feel like a crazy person. He has just turned 8 weeks old. Our problem now is that because we’ve known him for a few weeks, some of the names that I was previously considering don’t seem to suit him. That, and the fact that when I say some of the names out loud it doesn’t feel right. I used to love the idea of having a little [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] for example, but whenever I practise calling him by that it feels a little ridiculous. I know there’s always [name_m]Leo[/name_m] to bring it down to [name_f]Earth[/name_f] but I haven’t yet shortened our other two children’s names and I didn’t really want to do that this time around either.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] 2 days ago I had a ‘lightbulb’ moment and I thought, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]!! I think it’s absolutely handsome and I love its history and the way it rolls off my tongue whenever I say it.

Slight problem - when I mentioned it to my husband he wasn’t really a fan :frowning: My four year old, however, sounds absolutely gorgeous whenever she says it so I just might need to get her to say it more around hubby to persuade him. Hehe.

Also - there is the pronunciation issue that I worry about when using the [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] spelling. I’d like it pronounced [name_m]Augustin[/name_m]/[name_m]Augusten[/name_m] and would therefore probably opt for the [name_m]French[/name_m] variation. I personally don’t like the [name_u]August[/name_u]-een pronunciation for a boy.

I’m so looking forward to hearing all your thoughts about [name_m]Augustin[/name_m]!! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it goes ok with our other two children?

Thank you so much :blush: xo
