Oakley

My best friend is pregnant and told me her top two names the other night. She doesn’t know what she’s having but she said she’s pretty set on [name_u]Avery[/name_u] for a boy and [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] for a girl. [name]Oakley[/name] has always had a male feeling to me, she had wanted to spell it [name_f]Oaklie[/name_f] / [name_f]Oaklee[/name_f] to make it look more feminine but I suggested she go with a different/original spelling.

so I guess my question is would it work for a girl?

It’s very trendy right now, I would say, but I have always been able to see it on a girl. It reminds me of [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], so maybe that’s why. It also makes me think of the beach, possibly because of the sunglasses brand. Also, the [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] association makes it more suitable for a girl. I actually don’t mind it. (nicknames might be a pain, though)

[name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is fine on a girl. It’s a cute, solid unisex name that can be really pleasant on a girl, which is so common now, it’s hardly noticeable. It’s not my style really, but reminds me of [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], which I really like. Also, it’s easy to intuitively spell and pronounce - which is a big plus these days.

I would tell your friend that [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is great, but to please stick with the “traditional” spelling. [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is a recognizable but uncommon name (not in the Top 1000 for girls in 2012), so her little girl will already be unique. Like I said before, people are accustomed to unisex names, especially those ending in -ley, on little girls. [name_u]Finley[/name_u], [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_u]Paisley[/name_u], [name_u]Presley[/name_u], [name_u]McKinley[/name_u]… these are on Team [name_f]Pink[/name_f] now, and they all end in -ley. Changing an -ley to -lie doesn’t make a name feminine, it just makes spelling confusing for everyone else. Most of the people that will meet [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] in real life won’t see her name written down before meeting her, so I think it’s best to keep the spelling simple, lest she has to correct every birthday invitation, [name_u]Valentine[/name_u], text message, official form, etc, for the rest of her life. “No, not L-E-Y, it’s [name_u]OAK[/name_u] with an L-I-E” will get old really fast. On top of that, [name_m]Oaklie[/name_m] looks like [name_u]Oak[/name_u]-lie, as in, a tree that’s dishonest.

I love the idea of [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] (original spelling) for a girl. I think this is a good unisex name that will work well throughout her life.

I do have a male cousin by the name of [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], but I think it could work fine for a girl. Not my favorite, but still pretty. It is a solid unisex name imo.

It’s pretty unisex to me. In fact I think [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is in the top 100 girls names in a couple of states, but only appears on the ssa list for boys.

I like [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] for a girl, but not for a boy. Oakland for a boy would be handsome. I also don’t mind Oaklyn, but then again, so many girls’ names end in lyn-[name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is refreshing.

My nephew is named [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], so I see it as a boy name. It could be unisex too though.

I find [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] a boy name althought it considers unisex . I dont love it but i think the right girl would definitly wear it . But if she goes with that name i think she shoud keep the original spelling . Spelled differnitly doesnt add anything to me .

There are prettier names out there but I guess it’s ok.

I am not a fan of the name [name_u]Oakley[/name_u]/[name_m]Oaklee[/name_m] in general, but I feel it’s more masculine as well. Especially if your friend calls her [name_u]Oak[/name_u] as a nickname.

[name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is actually my top name. I absolutely love it! If I have a girl I plan on naming her [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. My husband is also a big fan. I originally thought of it for a boy but as I kept considering it I decided it sounded good for a girl. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] actually gotten to the point where I don’t even like it for a boy anymore!! [name_f]Love[/name_f] it! Original spelling too

My two cents here… I always felt as if [name_u]Avery[/name_u] was more geared for a girl… I know several girls named [name_u]Avery[/name_u]… [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t met a boy named [name_u]Avery[/name_u] yet. [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] sounds more masculine to me than feminine…
[name_m]Both[/name_m] are lovely names!!
