Oberon... yes or no?

Hey Berries,

Hubby just alerted me to the name [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]… and it’s so cool!
But my question is, is it too cool?? Too fanciful?? Is it actually usable??
We love unique names, so I feel like this could be a winner for us… however would love your thoughts and feelings on the name.

Thanks! xx

I love it and think it’s very useable, i think the world is so diversified that really anything goes (as long as it’s not offensive or has really bad meaning or connotations ect) I actually suggested it to you in your “family names” post a few days ago. So yeah I think it’s a winner!

[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] seems like a winner. It is rare, but it’s easy to say, and would be familiar to anyone who has heard of A Midsummer [name_m]Night[/name_m]'s [name_u]Dream[/name_u]. Besides, people do seem to like names starting with vowels recently, so this could be an on-trend yet unique choice.

Thanks for your suggestion, lovely! Your comment was where my hubs noticed it and was all “ooo that’s interesting…” - so we were chatting about it, and looking up meanings and all. You definitely sparked something. Thanks! Xx

I like it a lot! I personally think of the beer also but not a huge deal.

My dad (who is admittedly 60) uses this name as a joke because [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is ‘[name_m]King[/name_m] of the Fairies’. Now hopefully times have moved on but there may still be a bit of school boy sniggering over this one. From the limited contact I have with teenage boys, I have to say they don’t seem less homophobic than they did in my time at school, although probably they are less homophobic than they were when my dad was at school…
Anyway, just a small point to think about. I don’t think it’s a really big deal and I certainly don’t defend my father’s humour, but yeah, teenagers can still be a horrible lot.

I prefer the original [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] to stay away from the fairy association. I think there’s also an Oberyn in Game of Thrones, but since I don’t watch the show (or read the novels) I can’t comment on that association.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Obie[/name_m]! [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is really unique but familiar enough that I don’t think anyone will have trouble with it.

I love [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]! It is definitely a yes for me.

I think [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] has a lot of potential. I really like it. [name_u]Orion[/name_u] has gotten fairly popular here in the States, and [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] feels like a natural successor.

Interesting point. Thank you for bringing it up. Definitely something to keep in mind and be thinking about. One would hope times have changed, and I doubt young boys today would even know enough [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] to make the connection… but still worth considering.

I don’t mind either spelling, but hubby prefers the “O”. I don’t watch Game of Thrones either, but it could be worth looking into that association… I can’t imagine it’s necessarily good, given what that shows like…

Oh my gosh! Too cute! I hadn’t thought of nicknames, but that’s so precious! [name_u]Love[/name_u].

Yes, yes, yes! We love it, and we spell it [name_u]Auberon[/name_u]

A little too king of the fairies for me (i’d like to consider society abover that [name_u]Lind[/name_u] of teasing… but Brexit, and Trump.)

[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is such a gorgeous and unique name, fantastical and fairytale-like in the best way. I love the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] connection too. I’d love to meet an [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]! Many of my favourite names that I would happily use are quite unusual, but somehow [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] feels a bit too brave for me personally. I’m glad to see other people have no hesitation about it though.

I prefer it as [name_u]Auberon[/name_u], but it’s useable. I like its literary and astronomical associations.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about the Oberyn [name_m]Martell[/name_m] connection. He’s one of the few decent male characters in the series.

Yeah @southern.maple is right, he is a pretty cool character. My hubby wanted Oberyn when we were pregnant with our youngest, because of a combination of Zelazny’s [name_f]Amber[/name_f] chronicles & GOT.
I vetoed & we moved on.

I think it’s cool! And it is from my favorite [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] work. There are a few nickname possibilities too, which is a plus, I’d say. [name_m]Ron[/name_m], a bit normal sounding, or [name_m]Obie[/name_m] which is adorable.
