Oh doris 🌷

hello everyone!

let’s talk about sweet doris. :tulip:

first of all, i know that it’s generally considered as an “old lady name” but i think it sounds so sweet and warm.

i remember hearing it in a christmas movie when I was younger and for this reason, doris always makes me think of winter, snowy streets, the sound of snow shovels, and the magic of the holidays season. to me doris is peaceful, cozy, sweet and bright.

what about you?
how do you picture the parents of doris?
how do you picture little doris?

thank you so much for your ideas, opinions and suggestions! :sparkles:

I was honestly going to make a thread about [name_f]Doris[/name_f] as well, I love that name. Where I live in (Croatia) [name_f]Doris[/name_f] ranked at no. 39 last year, so it is well-loved here, and for a reason! When I think of [name_f]Doris[/name_f] I think of the sea, playful days at the beach and just having fun. Here it is mostly chosen by parents living in the coastal area, but it can be heard all over the country. I think it’s long overdue for a comeback, it’d fit right in with [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Betsy[/name_f]!

I can imagine [name_f]Doris[/name_f] on a kid, however, it’s very much a kid in a peter-pan collar dress and a knit cardigan, braids with bows at the end and knee socks and mary-janes, all in darker colours OR a total hipster kid. It’s difficult to see [name_f]Doris[/name_f] as a little kid next door for me, so I suppose I’d either imagine her parents being more traditional people, maybe university professors of archeology or history, definitely with a book-filled old house, probably no tv OR people who are doing something super creative, artists from [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] who travel around the country in a van during the summer, visiting national parks, going skateboarding and surfing, very politically active!

It’s not a name I see gaining popularity in the coming years as it doesn’t really have that long vowel sound that most revival names do and that tend to give the names a softer vibe.

I think [name_f]Doris[/name_f] is incredibly sweet! I’m not sure how I’d imagine her parents, but when I picture a little [name_f]Doris[/name_f], I see her lying in a meadow on a warm summer’s day, wearing a white dress with her hair done in two plaits and making daisy chains for her friends and family :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think like baby girls and little ones too kinda have cranky old lady energy so old lady names just kinda work on them and then it sounds cool to have a throwback name in your teens and everybody is used to your existence by then.

I love [name_f]Doris[/name_f] its just kinda soft and nice. I imagine the parents of a [name_f]Doris[/name_f] just being around my age. I dunno what’s the vibe on people in their 30’s presently. [name_m]Just[/name_m] kinda tired…sorta artfully shlubby.

[name_f]My[/name_f] given middle name is [name_f]Doris[/name_f], and I love it very much . I was named after my great-grandmother, who is in her 90s, but is still going strong. I think of her every time I hear the name [name_f]Doris[/name_f]. She’s a strong, full-blooded Norwegian woman who raised 6 children on a farm in Minnesota. Nowadays, if you go to her house, she’ll make you a huge meal, and ask about 10 times if you want seconds. She’s an amazing lady, and I’m proud to be named after her. I’ll be really sad when she inevitably dies in a few years :frowning:

[name_f]Doris[/name_f] is so sweet :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Sounds so friendly and nice! It definitely has an old lady feel to it, but I think that’s part of what would make it charming on a little girl today!

doris is beautiful!! it makes me think of purple flowers- violets, orchids, and irises. i envision cross-stitching and a gentle soul. doris’ parents love tea and this habit gets passed on to doris. they go on trips to the aquarium, art and science museums, and enroll doris in extracurriculars she’s interested in, from crochet club to lyra. i picture doris herself as a bright and curious child who grows to be soothing and peaceful. she’s an introvert with quiet hobbies, but as a child she was always up for an adventure (and still is- she just needs time to recharge at home).

[name_f]Doris[/name_f] does feel very cosy! It’s warm and gentle, but with a bit of kick to it too!
I imagine her parents to be a little eccentric, arty or bookish people. As for a little [name_f]Doris[/name_f], I picture her as friendly, caring, giggly and smart!

I immediately think of [name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u]! Who was always a favorite movie star of mine as a child. (I watched them with my grandma, as most of her movies came out when my grandma was quite young!) To me it’s a total '50s/'60s vibe, which in today’s world, is a sort of vintage cottagecore vie, but it’s a little on the sunshiny, Que [name_f]Sera[/name_f], farm-with-two-little-boys side of things.
