So my OH has been on at me regarding the name [name_m]Jax[/name_m] in what seems forever. I have said no for two reasons, it seems more like a nickname to me and three of us within the household start with J, it gets a bit much. He has now started in with [name_u]Kai[/name_u], which I like but find it too short. He is very fussy with names and by no means backwards in coming forward regarding names he likes/dislikes. I personally like [name_m]Coen[/name_m] at this stage, our son is [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
So thoughts on the names [name_m]Jax[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and [name_m]Coen[/name_m]? Middle name I really love [name_m]Atticus[/name_m].
[name_m]How[/name_m] much input do other people’s OH have? I want us to both love the name but not sure it is going to happen, took me a while to get him on board with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m].
[name_m]Jax[/name_m] and [name_u]Kai[/name_u] are not my style, although I prefer [name_u]Kai[/name_u] to [name_m]Jax[/name_m]. I do like [name_m]Jack[/name_m].
[name_m]Coen[/name_m] is not really my style either, sorry. I think that [name_m]Coen[/name_m] and [name_u]Kai[/name_u] are perfectly usable names, and [name_m]Coen[/name_m] beats [name_u]Kai[/name_u] for me.
My OH and I are going into naming with a requirement that both of us love the name. Our family surname is his, so I get total control of the middle. I believe that if I settled on something I truly loved when the time comes to write their name on the birth certificate, he would ultimately defer to me. However, right now we have equal input for equal effort.
If you are not keen on the short names, what about a compromise wherein you choose a longer name and use his short zippy choices as nicknames? [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] or [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] nn [name_m]Jax[/name_m]; [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] or [name_m]Caius[/name_m] nn [name_u]Kai[/name_u], for example.
Would [name_u]Kai[/name_u] spelt [name_u]Cai[/name_u] be any more appealing to you? I find it looks so much softer and more attractive to me - it kind of helps me realise that I actually do really like the sound of the name, I just can’t get behind the trendy-looking spelling.
[name_u]Kai[/name_u] for me feels like a surfer dude or a starbaby, whereas [name_u]Cai[/name_u] has more of a quirky, preppy feel - I link it to names like [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m], [name_m]Caius[/name_m], [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] and [name_u]Machi[/name_u].
I think [name_f]Katinka[/name_f] is on to something with Cauis. It has the feel of both [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], and with the nickname [name_u]Cai[/name_u].
Before you choose the name [name_m]Coen[/name_m]/[name_m]Cohen[/name_m] I would suggest that you make yourself aware that it’s use may be offensive to some groups. For that reason I would choose something else. I like the @lavendarwitch’s suggestion of choosing a longer form of [name_u]Kai[/name_u]/[name_u]Cai[/name_u] or [name_m]Jax[/name_m] and you can call him by the longer form and dad’s name for him is the short version. [name_u]Win[/name_u]-win!
I feel strongly that you should both love the name choice. If you put yourself in the position of not loving your child’s name, it becomes very clear how important that is. Maybe you need to keep looking and I hope you find the perfect one. Good luck!
I’d also encourage you to read up on the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]/[name_m]Coen[/name_m] - it is offensive to some and for that reason I would never use it.
I have to say that I hate the name [name_m]Jax[/name_m]. And I don’t use the hate word lightly. It just sounds so trendy in a bad way - [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is 200x nicer and [name_m]Jax[/name_m] just feels like a bad unique spelling.
That leaves [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and although I don’t dislike the name, it doesn’t fit with [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. But that doesn’t have to matter. It is a strong sounding name.
I’d continue to read names and find more options that you both really like. You need some more options. Maybe:
[name_m]Nate[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Trey[/name_m]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Ray[/name_u])

[name_u]Niall[/name_u]
[name_u]Gray[/name_u]
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] (nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m] is cool and sort of reminds me of [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and [name_m]Jax[/name_m])
Or something else that has a cool nickname
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m] nn [name_u]Beck[/name_u]
Henrick nn [name_m]Hank[/name_m]
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m] nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u]
[name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] nn [name_m]Oz[/name_m]
