I asked for help for brother names for [name_f]Iris[/name_f] (this baby will be a delivery surprise). I didn’t think I needed help with girl names, because they just seem easier! But the boy question was fun and I got so many great responses, so I’m back for your input.
My current favorite names are all over the board. We know that we don’t want to use another flower/nature name (although there are so many pretty ones!). I’m finding [name_f]Iris[/name_f] a difficult name to match to a sister! I don’t love any options that also have a strong R sound. Some of my favorites right now are (of course this seems to change daily):
[name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f] (should I steer clear of another noun name altogether?)
[name_u]June[/name_u] (same question as above!)
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (we are not Greek - is two Greek names strange?)
[name_f]Annie[/name_f] (keep going back to this one, but is it too “plain” with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]?)
The other frontrunners when [name_f]Iris[/name_f] was born were [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] (not [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], just [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]). I’m on the fence as to whether or not I still like these! [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] sticks out from every other name in this post, but I think it’s cute and spunky.
Some names that I love but either a) don’t work with our last name, or b) have been used recently by friends: [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f].
With boys, I like classic names. With girls, I’m more willing to think outside the box. But in general, mostly drawn to vintage-style names.
I have long thought [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] would make great sister names because they’re both goddess names and they both have fun meanings (moon and rainbow), but they sound nothing alike. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] also fits in with this thought too though. OMGoodness! A sibest of [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] the idea of it makes the name nerd in me swoon! lol Although, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] are both moon goddess names, so that may be a bit much.
I also really like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u]! [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is another great goddess option.
From your list, I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] with [name_u]June[/name_u]. They sound nice together stylistically and each have that vintage charm. I don’t think of [name_u]June[/name_u] as a noun name, although I guess it is. Maybe because it’s an established name (like [name_f]Iris[/name_f]) where it sounds more name-y than wordy.
As a suggestion, I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Lila[/name_f] would be also be gorgeous.
Have you considered [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]? That was the first name that came to mind for me. It’s a shame you can’t use [name_f]Clara[/name_f] or [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] … so lovely with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!
I think [name_f]Annie[/name_f] would work well. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. And no, it’s not plain next to [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
Other suggestions: [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f]) … [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] … [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] ([name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Bee[/name_f]). Oh! [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is cute!
I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] together - and no, I don’t think two Greek names together are strange - I think it’s lovely! My second choice is [name_f]June[/name_f].
My favorite with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] from your list is [name_u]June[/name_u] though I slightly prefer [name_f]Juno[/name_f] with [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as a sibset is delightful.
Other possibilities:
[name_u]Eden[/name_u] (I love this name and think it works well with [name_f]Iris[/name_f])
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is gorgeous! I don’t think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] are too Greek. They’re perfectly fine. I like [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], but not as much as the first sibset. I agree that [name_f]Annie[/name_f] is a little boring if paired with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]'s okay, [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is too nicknamey for me. Other names to consider:
[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]/[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]/Esmé/Esmée
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Elle[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] are my favorite combo from your list, although [name_u]June[/name_u] is really cute with [name_f]Iris[/name_f] too.
Have you thought about [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? They have a similar sound to [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and hold that vintage charm. Another idea would be [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], another charming name which would give you the nickname option of [name_f]Milly[/name_f] (similar to [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]).
Oh, and also [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] sound adorable together. Although I’m not sure if that name (or [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] for that matter), violates your R rule.
I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] together, I have them both on my list. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]?
From your list, I adore [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Most people probably won’t even know they are both of Greek origin. And if they do, I definitely think that is a non-issue. My second favorite is [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u].
Some other ideas,
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (nn. [name_u]Josie[/name_u])
[name_f]Posey[/name_f]
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Leila[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] or [name_f]Norah[/name_f]
I adore [name_u]June[/name_u] and think it goes great with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]! I also like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] with [name_f]Iris[/name_f], and love the suggestion of [name_f]Lena[/name_f] (my favorite name but rhymes with my first name ;)).
Although they’re cute names, I’m not a big fan of Annie or Tilly, only because they’re a bit too nick namey for me as well.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a lovely name and reminds me of the 1930’s and agatha christie and other books of that era, so I would go with anything suitably vintage. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ( [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_f]Bee[/name_f] sounds so cute), [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is gorgeous…
