[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I started a thread ages ago and people gave me great suggestions but now I can’t find that thread However, I went through an awful time during this pregnancy with severe anxiety and my aunt helped me through it, I literally could not have gotten through it without her… so now my list of names has kind of gone out the window as I really feel it’d be nice to name our new baby after my aunt… thing is, her name is [name_u]Joan[/name_u]. I don’t like that name, but I [name_f]DO[/name_f] like ‘[name_f]Joanie[/name_f]’. I love the sound of it, yet not sure I’m totally comfortable with naming my baby a nickname… I love the sound and feel of ‘[name_f]Joanie[/name_f]’ it just feels right to me… but do you think it’s in bad taste to name a baby a variation on a name?! I literally never want her called ‘[name_u]Joan[/name_u]’. All my other kids have solid, definite names (but they all have nicknames based on those names too!) I just want opinions on this… What do you all think? Here is my list from before: [name_u]Carmen[/name_u], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_f]Silvana[/name_f], [name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], [name_f]Margaux[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Fredda[/name_f], [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Frieda[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
Edited to say I really love [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] from my original list. Both really draw me. I’d probably name her [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] or something like that… Or [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] Maricarmen. Can’t wait for opinions!!! Due in seven weeks
Could [name_u]Joan[/name_u] be the middle name?
I think it’s fine to use an honor name that isn’t necessarily the same name. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] in place of Susuan. Instead of [name_m]Melvin[/name_m] using a M or [name_u]Mel[/name_u]- name, etc.
If you want [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] to be the nickname would a jo-name work for you?
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Joanne[/name_f] [name_f]Joanna[/name_f]?
Those would all be beautiful options with an obvious tie to aunt [name_u]Joan[/name_u].
The rest of your list is beautiful. [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] would be really cute!
I think that honouring is more about intentions and having the connection be clear to you and your family rather than have it be obvious to the entire world. I do think there is a limit to “creativity in honouring” as “I named my kid [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] after my aunt [name_f]Laura[/name_f] who likes rock music and rock music is music and [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] [name_m]Mozart[/name_m] wrote music” would be too far-fetched but naming a child [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Johanna[/name_f], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], etc. after an aunt [name_u]Joan[/name_u] would be perfectly logical and quite obvious to me.
I’m not sure if this is the case on mobile, but on desktop if you hover over your username and click “View Forum Posts” you can view your previous posts.
I think using [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] is a perfectly appropriate way to honour a [name_u]Joan[/name_u].
I have a friend [name_f]Joni[/name_f] pronounced the same as your spelling [name_f]Joanie[/name_f]. Her “real name” is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] and she has always been called [name_f]Joni[/name_f] since birth. [name_m]Even[/name_m] teachers called her [name_f]Joni[/name_f] all of her life through school. I think the name [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] is perfect use for a first name to honor a [name_u]Joan[/name_u] or when [name_u]Joan[/name_u] is a mn. Some of your fn names like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] would be perfect for [name_f]Joanie[/name_f]!
I think using [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] to honour [name_u]Joan[/name_u] is perfectly appropriate and not at all in bad taste! I prefer the spelling [name_f]Joni[/name_f], though.
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] as a fisrt name. From your choices I would go with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] (I actually prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]) or [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
I think it’s perfectly acceptable! There’s [name_f]Joni[/name_f] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] so I don’t see why spelling it like [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] would be a problem.
I think you should go for it! I do prefer [name_f]Joni[/name_f] a little though. And it would help prevent people shortening it occasionally to [name_u]Joan[/name_u] and help them think if it more as a stand alone name. [name_f]Joanie[/name_f] of course does make it more obvious that you are honouring your aunt and is beautiful too
