Old-fashioned name

I just discovered a name new to me, [name_f]Chestina[/name_f]. It was the name of writer/gardener [name_f]Eudora[/name_f] Welty’s mother. Her mom’s nickname was [name_f]Chessie[/name_f].

I love [name_m]Chester[/name_m] for a boy and while I would not name a daughter [name_f]Chestina[/name_f], it does have a nostalgic charm I think. The Chest part not so much, nor the [name_f]Tina[/name_f], but just the bell-like sound of the whole. And [name_f]Chessie[/name_f] is cute.

Any thoughts? No need to like it, but I wouldn’t mind meeting one, plus I think it’s wonderful for a dignified cat.

[name_f]Chessie[/name_f] is sweet but I’m not really liking the sound of [name_f]Chestina[/name_f] tbh

Yeah, I think the chest part is hard for a girl, but [name_f]Chessie[/name_f] is cute. A similar name/nn that I really like is [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cressie[/name_f].

This is the funniest description of a name I’ve ever read!

I agree. [name_f]Chestina[/name_f] does have a certain appeal- almost like a [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u]-[name_f]Christina[/name_f] mash-up- but it is probably best for a cat.

Thanks!

I like how it summons up hope chests. Now one of us has to get a cat!

Yes, [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] is lovely. I like Cress or [name_f]Crescent[/name_f] for a nn.

I think [name_f]Chessie[/name_f] is adorable, but would need another way to get to it since I don’t like [name_f]Chestina[/name_f] at all

I knew a gorgeous young Italian woman named [name_f]Cesaria[/name_f] whose nn was [name_f]Chessie[/name_f].

[name_f]Chessie[/name_f] is a sweet nickname, it reminds me of the game chess and a smart, sharp-thinking girl. [name_f]Chestina[/name_f] feels a bit hard to wear though. What about [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] or [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] nn [name_f]Chessie[/name_f]? Or even [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] or [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] nn [name_f]Chessie[/name_f].

Wasn’t Chessy the name of the housekeeper in the 1999 The Parent Trap? That is one positive connotation. I loved her character.

Like everyone else I think [name_f]Chestina[/name_f] would be a difficult name to wear in real life. But honestly I didn’t look at it and see “chest”-- I thought of chestnuts -> warmth and goodness --> coziness.

Chestnuts! What a cozy image.

I knew a girl named [name_f]Chesney[/name_f] (pronounced like CHEZ-knee) with NN [name_m]Chess[/name_m]/[name_f]Chessie[/name_f]. However I don’t like [name_f]Chestina[/name_f]… immediately makes me think “chest” - G-d forbid she were a busty girl! I’m normally not one to worry about potential for teasing about names, but this one crosses that line for me I think…

That’s why it would make a great cat name - cats don’t have chests so to speak.

I do like [name_f]Chesney[/name_f] though as it reminds me of these funny Regency romances I read by [name_u]Marion[/name_u] [name_f]Chesney[/name_f].

I don’t know that Parent Trap, only the original with [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] [name_m]Mills[/name_m] whose housekeeper was called [name_f]Verbena[/name_f]!
